About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Collin Classic – McKinney, TX

Texbiker.net Posted on December 19, 2009 by Rick AnkrumDecember 19, 2009

Collin Classic

The 19th Collin Classic is a rural bicycle rally that will start and finish at the McKinney North High School on Saturday, June 12, 2010. The ride begins at 8:00am.

Packet Pick-Up and Registration on the day of the ride open at 6:30am.

Offering routes of 4, 15, 22, 34, 47 and 55 miles, this event will attract families, weekend warriors and avid cyclists to celebrate life in a day filled with fun.

Our 4 mile route is a flat loop, designed for the family with kids who are not ready for an open road ride – but want to see what a big bike rally is all about. All other routes will cross over US75 and ride out into the countryside of Northeastern Collin County.

Our 15, 22, 34, 47 and 55 mile routes are all single loop routes . We are travelling to the Northeast portion of Collin County, passing through Blue Ridge, Valdasta, Frognot, Climax, Altoga, Princeton and New Hope. While we have lost most of the smooth asphalt that we have enjoyed for the past 3 years, the pavement quality and scenery are still very enjoyable. Worried about missing out on the big hill at the finish of our old routes? Not to worry. We have plenty of rolling hills on our routes that will provide plenty of challenge.

Bikin Mike
January 1 is on a Friday this year, so we want to make it easy to get to the start on time. Cyclists may start as early as 10am – but you can start as late as 11am. You read that right. We will offer a one-hour start window to accommodate your schedule.
We offer routes of 13, 28 and 38 miles. Come on out and enjoy a nice ride in the country. Break Points along the way, some even have indoor plumbing.

December 18th Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup

Texbiker.net Posted on December 18, 2009 by Rick AnkrumDecember 18, 2009

If you are setting goals for next year here is one challenge you might want to consider:

from RoadBikeRider.com Newsletter
Issue No. 423 – 12/17/09
The Year-Rounder Challenge & Larry Schwartz Award

These are annual programs that begin in January. They’re offered by the UltraMarathon Cycling Association to reward consistency in riding centuries, double centuries, brevets and other long rides.

Cyclists anywhere in the world can participate. You can ride qualifying miles in events or on your own. Standings are published so you can see how you stack up with the other riders, and medals are awarded based on individual achievement.

The programs are fully explained on the UMCA website, but basically here’s how they work.

—Year-Rounder Challenge:  This is a mileage competition. There are 4 distance categories that go into the Combined division for the overall standings. The shortest ride that can be counted is 90 miles (144.9 km). At year end, the Gold award recognizes riders who have reached 3,000 miles (4,830 km) and the Platinum award goes to those who’ve tallied at least 5,000 miles (8,050 km).

—Larry Schwartz Award:  This is named for the late endurance rider from Texas. To earn a medal you need to do at least one Year-Rounder ride (90 miles or more) each month during the calendar year. There can be 2 make-up rides. So if your winter is so nasty that you can’t do the distance in January and February, for example, you can start in March and make up for the 2 missed months later in the year.

To do qualifying rides on your own, you simply gather store receipts at refueling stops or ask witnesses to sign a paper for you. These things verify distance and time. Or you can use printouts of GPS-generated maps and ride data. Then you mail the documentation to the UMCA.

ChipSeal: It Is Hard To Plan For Traffic Stops

C y c l e * D a l l a s: Motorists never think…
by PM Summer
…about where they should position themselves within a lane.

Most traffic lanes are designed to accommodate a single line of vehicles. Motorists rarely have more than a few feet of lateral movement available to them within that single travel lane. It never occurs to them to consider where in the lane they ought to be laterally, their only concern is that they remain within the lane itself. …

FIXED ON BIKES: The Puzzler is right around the corner….
by Chris
The 2010 version of the Puzzler will be more challenging than ever with a large portion of new singletrack being added to the mix.  Trails are still under construction, so maps and gps tracks won’t be available until later in the year.  The format will be similar but expect an extra steep climb earlier in race as we’re eliminating the loop around the northern end of the mountains and replacing it with a switchback climb up to the ridgeline. …
