Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

27th Annual Turkey Roll Bicycle Rally transverses the beautiful rolling hills of Denton & Grayson Counties. The safety and enjoyment of our riders is our utmost concern. Over 150 specially designed course markers keep riders on safe, smooth road surface. Multiple Porta-poties at all rest stops along with ample stocks of beverages and snacks adds to the comfort of our riders. Riders may choose from among three/4 courses: 23, 35, XX, and 71 miles in length.

Until 10/4 -$22 + $3.25 online processing fee; Until 11/15 – $24 + $3.25 online processing fee, $27 day of event

Austin Bike Culture Calendar Events: 6/11- 6/17/09

Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming week from our comprehensive calendar of all cycling events. Thanks to Jason at ATXBS for letting us know about some events we couldn’t find elsewhere. As always, if there is an event you know about that’s not on our calendar contact us, and we’ll add your event on and possibly add it to the weekly round up.

Kenny Hill AutoWerks’ Driveway Criterium Races
4:30 PM, Community Rally, 5:30 PM, Races, The Driveway, 8400 Delwau Ln
Weekly Thursday night road racing through October that takes place on the closed car-free driving course at the Driveway. Races include Cat 4/5 at 6:10, Cat 3/4 at 5:30, Pro/Cat 1/2/3 at 6:45 to choose from with a fourth Masters race (40 + years old) running from May 21- August 6 starting at 7:45. Open riding during Community Rally from 4:30- 5:30 PM. Races registration $20, Rally $10. $5 off with 8 oz can donated to Capital Area Food Bank. See our article about the series for more info.

Thursday Night Bike Polo

The Austin Bike Polo Club has added another weekly match to the regular Sunday afternoon affair. All bikes and skill levels are welcome and spare mallets and balls are available if you don’t have any. Check out our recent article on bike polo for more info.

City Council action on the Austin 2009 Master Bike Plan

The Austin 2009 Master Bike Plan is up for passage by the Austin City Council, and we need to a strong showing by the cycling community in support of passage and full funding of the plan. Click here to learn more and see how else you can let the City Council know you support the plan.

Urban Night Ride
7:30 PM, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge
A new ride from the Facebook group Social Cycling ATX. Meet at Pedestrian Bridge at 7:30p.m. leave at 8:00p.m. sharp. Bring your cameras & twitter phones and get some good sunset shots. This week’s ride will pick up where last week’s left off with an eastside cruise followed by free beer at Club DeVille. DJ Pole Cat will be DJing at the party. You’ll be able to bring your bikes in the club and park them at the back bar as long as we keep the fire exit clear. As always, bring a valid ID as they will be checking.

Armadillo Hill Country Classic Volunteer Appreciation Picnic and Ride
8 AM, Brushy Creek Lake Park, 3300 Brushy Creek Rd, Cedar Park, TX
Meet at Brushy Creek Lake Park in Cedar Park as we thank our volunteers who helped make this year’s Armadillo Hill Country Classic a success. The park is located off of Brushy Creek Road just east of Parmer Lane. Please park at the back of the parking lot near the restrooms and water feature. Everyone is welcome to join us for rides of 12, 20, 33, 46, and 63 miles. After the ride we’ll have a special party for our volunteers which will include a barbeque lunch in the park. There will be several hosted rides leaving from the park including a 5.5 mile kids and family ride within the park. Ride organizer: Patti at 512-799-4833

Mellow Johnny’s Scout-A-Ride: Mamma Jamma Training Ride Kick Off

Saturday mornings spent exploring City of Austin bike routes finding new neighborhoods and ways to get around on your bike. The Scout-A-Route crew hosts the Mamma Jamma Training Ride Kick Off. This ride is open to everyone whether or not you are participating in the Oct 10th Mamma Jamma Ride. We’ll take you on a pretty flat course through downtown to get your legs moving again and get to know some of the other riders interested in benefiting breast cancer service organizations. Longer ride lengths will be available. Come at 8:00am for pre-ride coffee. Ride organizer: Eileen Schaubert at eileen@mellowjohnnys.com or 512-426-4851.

Tour De Pepper Ride
8:30 AM, Dublin High School, Dublin, TX

For one week every year Dublin, Texas becomes Dr Pepper, Texas. And now you are invited to ride her hills and trails in a bike event unlike any other, the Tour de Pepper. By participating in the ride you can become part of a cycle of change as you team up with Kids Across Cultures and Dublin Dr Pepper to make a difference in our world. Choose from ride routes of 9, 34, or 62 miles. Following your ride, join in the festivities of Dublin Dr Pepper Days and help celebrate the 118th birthday of the oldest Dr Pepper bottling plant in the world. Family friendly fun and all the original recipe Dr Pepper you can drink is available only a short distance from the bike ride finish line.

Violet Crown Cycles Custom City Bikes at the Sunset Valley Farmer’s Market
9 AM- 1 PM, Sunset Valley Farmer’s Market, Tony Burger Center Parking Lot, 3200 Jones Rd
Austin’s newest framebuilder, Violet Crown Cycles, now has a booth at the Sunset Valley Farmer’s Market. Violet Crown Cycles is a builder of custom, handbuilt Dutch style city bikes. View and test ride sample bikes, browse custom options, and have your questions answered about the bike building process and the features of bikes truly built for transportation. Come out and see the bikes and get some fresh, locally grown food while your at it.

Sunday Morning Fixie Ride
8:20 AM, Posse East, 2900 Duval St
The ride is focused on fixed-gear bikes, but everyone is welcome. The ride will proceed at a social pace from the UT campus to the south this week for about 26 miles total. The route is mostly flat, but there will be a few hills near the end.

East Side Hill Ride
9 AM, The Peddler Bike Shop 119 W. North Loop
Head out from the Peddler Bike Shop and enjoy the east side for some short, sharp climbs. Finish at Epoch for coffee. Please park on side of Musical Exchange or on Ave F side street. Distance: 32.5 mi. Contact: Greg Ritter at gritter@tca.edu or 512-906-6709

Capital City BMX Weekly Race Series
1 PM, Capital City BMX, 15010 FM Road 620 North
The Capital City BMX opened in November 2008 and offers you a chance to learn and race BMX. BMX races are held every Sunday with rider check-in 1-2 PM. Cost $10/rider. (There is also practice time on Saturday’s. Check Capital City BMX for more info.)

Hardcourt Bike Polo
4 PM, Eastwoods Park, 3001 Harris Park Ave
Join fellow bike polo enthusiasts as part of the newly formed Austin Bike Polo Club for a friendly Sunday match every week. All bikes and skill levels are welcome and spare mallets and balls are available if you don’t have any. Check out our recent article on bike polo for more info.

Weekly Ladies Ride presented by Team Hotel San Jose and Mellow Johnny’s
5:30 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Show, 400 Nueces St
This is a weekly Monday ride reserved just for the ladies! Join experienced and knowledgeable riders from Mellow Johnny’s and Team Hotel San Jose for a friendly and moderately paced social ride (14-16mph average). This is a perfect chance to become more comfortable riding in a group, ask questions about pack riding or racing, meet other ladies like yourself who also enjoy riding, and keep up your fitness. We start at 5:30pm and will ride for 1-2 hours.

Ride Like a Girl Women’s Mountain Bike Rides
6 PM, Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park, 12138 N Lamar Blvd
The Austin Ridge Riders are hosting a five month program of weekly Monday evening women’s mountain bike rides, plus weekend rides at local mountain bike trails/parks. This is an opportunity to meet other women to ride with, learn new trails and learn new skills. Each ride will divide up into groups based on riders’ abilities and speed and will have a beginner clinic/ride, intermediate, and advanced group rides. Rides will last 1 – 2.5 hours. Prizes and gift certificates from our sponsors will be raffled away after every ride. All riders must wear a helmet, bring plenty of water, and have a trail-worthy bike in good working condition. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time.

Urban Transportation Commission Bicycle and Pedestrian Subcommittee
6 PM, City Hall, 301 West 2nd Street, Room #1029
The Urban Transportation Commission advises the city council, city manager and all other transportation-related departments concerning transportation-related matters. This subcommittee works on bike and pedestrian related issues that are considered by the entire commission.
