About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Ride of Silence – Many Cities

Texbiker.net Posted on November 23, 2008 by Rick AnkrumApril 25, 2009

Join cyclists worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph/20 kph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.

On May 20, 2009, at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn’t aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed. (Read the full history here…)

The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There is no brochure, no sponsors, no registration fees and no t-shirt. The ride, which is held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.

Please check the resources on this site. If there is a Ride Of Silence in your area, we encourage you to join them. If there is not a ride planned in your area, please consider adding your city to the ever-growing list of sites by going here:

3 Feet Wide Jersey available online

Texbiker.net Posted on November 22, 2008 by Rick AnkrumNovember 22, 2008

Joe Mizereck, is now selling a safety yellow jersey online with a huge statement calling for 3 feet of passing space from drivers.

The battle for space between cyclists and motorists is intensifying–worldwide.  And the need for space has never been greater.  More must be done to educate motorists of the importance of sharing our roads and giving cyclists at least 3 feet of clearance when passing.

Currently, fourteen states* in the US have laws requiring motorists to give cyclists at least 3 feet of clearance when passing.  These “3 foot laws” are a good step in making our roads safer for cyclists. The challenge is educating motorists about the law and reminding them to follow the law.

Texas Tough Riders Form in Dallas

Texbiker.net Posted on November 22, 2008 by Rick AnkrumNovember 22, 2008

TEXAS RIDERS is a group of friends who combine our passion for cycling (some call it an “addiction”) with fun social activities and charitable fundraising.  We get together for training and exercise rides, participate in several local rallies throughout the year and ride in charity events.

Our riders have a variety of experience levels, including cyclists who have been riding for years, casual weekend riders, and riders who are new to the sport and were inspired by the personal challenge of cycling in a major event like the MS150 or TX TOUGH.

Motocross to host mountain bikers

Texbiker.net Posted on November 22, 2008 by Rick AnkrumNovember 22, 2008

from www.themonitor.com

WHAT: Short Track Mountain Bike Race

WHEN: 6:30 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: D-Tronics Motocross Park, Valley View Road just north of Expressway 83 in Donna

COST: $20 entry fee to compete; spectators admitted for free

MORE INFO: http://missiontrails.org/

DONNA — Members of the Cactus Cruzers mountain biking team have the group’s motto printed on their shirts: “If you never wreck, you’re not going fast enough.”

The team seems to have taken that message to heart. Within hours of testing out the group’s new home track in Donna, one member was carted away in an ambulance.

That’s likely because the D-Tronics Motocross Park isn’t even designed for mountain bikers. With steep climbs, bumps and the opportunity to catch some air, the park originally intended for motorbikes is now an unusual home for mountain bikers.
