About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

From Sore Muscles to Steady Pace: Conquering the Tuesday Route

Texbiker.net Posted on September 10, 2024 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 10, 2024

My extracurricular work meant sore muscles for today’s bike ride. I was slow to get start not rolling until 10:45 AM on the Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike. The route went south and east as most Tuesday rides following the ### Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route including the workaround for the closed greenbelt along Kingwood Drive at Kingwood High School. With the sore muscles I wasn’t sure how much energy and speed would happen but as I warmed up my sore leg muscles loosened enough to power into the headwind on the way to FM2100. The weather changed from yesterday as tropical storm Francine moves up the Texas coast but offshore enough to not be a direct threat. It looks like the folks in Louisiana will get the brunt this time. The lower humidity and dew point was nice while it lasted. At FM2100 I made the left turn and rode into the wind until FM1960. Riding west on FM1960 the wind helped me boost the overall average speed to 13.1 mph. Back on the west side of the lake I rode through Atascocita Shores and Kings River to W. Lake Houston Parkway to cross the river. I finished the ride at 1:36 PM with 35.67 miles. I’m now at 312 miles for the month leaving 554 more to reach my goal.

Weather: Start 78 degrees, humidity 76%, dew point 70.0, overcast, wind NE 12 mph; Finish 83 degrees, humidity 74%, dew point 74.2, overcast, wind E 10 mph.

Can a social bike ride take root in car-centric Longview?: ‘We’re just vibing’

Samuel Shaw | www.news-journal.com

The third Thursday in August was a hot one — triple digits. Hot enough to subdue the resident wasps outside of Silver Grizzly Espresso, but not enough to dampen enthusiasm for a bike ride staging under the downtown Longview coffee shop’s awning.

In a city engineered to move cars as fast as possible, only the most dedicated cyclists venture off Longview’s trails and onto the streets — fewer still in the heat of late August. Yet the 20-plus riders gearing up that evening didn’t fit the mold of hardcore endurance athletes.

Some participants, like Longview resident …

Fort Worth cycling community remembers cyclist, local science teacher who was hit, killed by car

Author: Scoop Jefferson | www.wfaa.com

68-year-old Charles Henson was riding his bike when he was hit and killed by a driver on Saturday. Now, his friends are honoring him.

BENBROOK, Texas — Longtime cyclist Javier Lucio vows never to forget fellow cyclist Charles Henson, who is affectionately known as Chuck. The two are part of Fort Worth’s cycling community who ride as part of staying healthy and enjoying fellowship at the same time.

“We had a lot of wonderful times with Chuck,” Javier Lucio said, “and we’re going to miss this one.”

Lucio shared several photographs of Henson on his bike. He was the one who often motivated Henson to join them on rides even when he didn’t feel up to it. On Saturday, September 7th they met at Press Cafe in Fort Worth for a group ride. On this particular ride, there were 10 …

Riding Out the Symptoms: A Return to The Highlands – Oakhurst Route

Texbiker.net Posted on September 9, 2024 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 9, 2024

As I began today’s bike ride I was suffering from Vuelta a España withdraw after watching 21 stages. The road racing calendar has some blank days which doesn’t help either.

I decided to counter the withdraw symptoms by riding the Community Drive – The Highlands – Oakhurst route for the second time (previous ride was May 22nd this year). This route goes north along US59 to TX99 with a short segment to Loop 494 before returning to US59. I stayed on the TX99 frontage road to Valley Ranch Blvd. then under TX99 to Valley Ranch Bend Drive. Following side streets to Forest Colony took me to Azalea Blvd. Valley Ranch Parkway (lot of Valley Ranch names) to FM1314 where I turned to the NW. A quick visit to Porter High School and back to FM1314. Cumberland Blvd. was the way to The Highlands. I rode to the far west end of The Highlands where the golf course resides. Back to FM1314 and the NE wind escorting me to Old Sorters Road. Through Briar Tree and Oakhurst on streets I rode yesterday in the opposite direction. Returning to US59 taking the u-turn at Kingwood Drive, over to Loop 494 and into Kings Manor meant the ride finish was about 5 miles away. I started at 10:29 AM and finished at 1:44 PM with some pretty abnormal Houston weather: Start 78 degrees, humidity 52%, dew point 58.8, partly cloudy, wind NE 10 mph; @ The Highlands 84 degrees, humidity 40%, dew point 57, a few clouds, wind NE 12 mph; Finish 86 degrees, humidity 53%, dew point 66.7, a few clouds, wind NE 15 mph. Humidity this low is super special and the dew low dew point added to that. I barely noticed I was sweating until I saw the salt stain on my gloves and arm sleeves. My Cervelo Caledonia performed smoothly, too. I rode 40.63 miles compared to 37.87 the previous time on this route. September now totals 276.42 miles or 32% of the way to my goal of 866 miles. I have a slight edge on the miles per day to reach the goal.

‘Cycling brought us together’: Texarkana couple gets married at the Waco Wild West Bike Race

By Cris Cordova | www.kwtx.com

A couple tied the knot right before leading Waco’s Wild West Bike Race

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – A Texarkana couple was married in front of 1,800 bikers at the Waco Wild West Bike Race.

15 minutes before the race, Stanley Woods and Bonnie Webb were married at the race’s starting line in downtown Waco. They were dressed in athletic wear made to look like wedding attire.

“When you’re on a bike it’s like you get to see the world in slow motion,” Webb said.

The couple met through cycling. Webb, new to cycling at the time, attended a group ride organized by Woods. Woods said that bond is what made them decide to get married at a bike race. …
