About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

‘That’s why I go hard’ – LaVernia cyclist overcomes cancer diagnosis to finish grueling races

Vincent T. Davis | www.expressnews.com

This is the 16th time that retired Army Lt. Col. Bill Mercado of La Vernia has taken part in the grueling cycling race called the Hotter ‘n Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was diagnosed with leukemia more than two years ago, but Mercado hasn’t let his treatments stop him from living life to the fullest.

The Hotter’N Hell Hundred is not for shirkers. It’s for gallant souls committed to riding bicycles 100 grueling miles in 100-degree heat in one day.

On Aug. 28, cyclist Bill Mercado, 76, finished his 16th ride at the event that’s been held in Wichita Falls since 1982. The retired Army lieutenant colonel rode his black and yellow Cervélo carbon-frame bicycle among more than 13,000 cyclists from around the world. Mercado pedaled his sleek bike frame, weighing 2 pounds with 22 gears and hailed for its aerodynamic design, in the thick of speeding scrums.

He finished in under six hours. But when the toned and tanned Mercado …

Video: Bicycle ride across Texas honors first responders who died in the line of duty

By Katie Aupperle | www.kwtx.com

WACO, Texas (KWTX) -“Never forget.” That’s the motto of the Texas Brotherhood Ride.

Every year, first responders hit the highways of Texas on their bicycles to ride in honor of those they have lost.

This year’s ride is dedicated to 82 law enforcement members and 29 firefighters lost in 2020 in the line of duty.

The Brotherhood Ride kicked off in Houston Sunday. Monday, they rode their bikes through a number of Central Texas towns, going from Bryan-College Station to Waco.

“Knowing that we’re doing it for someone that can not do that now,” Capt. Craig Brouillette with the Baton Rouge Sherriff’s Office said.

“They paid the …

Suffering From Bike Race Withdraw Syndrome, Greenway To The Rescue

Texbiker.net Posted on September 6, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 6, 2021

Suffering from bike race withdraw syndrome I decided to bike the Spring Creek Greenway today. 3 of the 4 bike races I have been watching ended yesterday. Between 4 AM and 5 AM that looked doubtful as a strong rainstorm dumped 1.66″ of rain. But by the time I started the ride at 10:11 AM the streets were pretty dry. I didn’t bike the full greenway stopping at John Pundt Park as the turn around point. This was the 4th time biking this route in 2021, all on the same bike, my Lynskey R300. The distance came in at 40.18 miles, just barely the longest of the 4 times. I wasn’t the only biker on the greenway as you can see in the video and I didn’t get all of them. There were some puddles along the way with a short section covered with water but no problems. I did wash the Lynskey after I got home at 1:44 PM.

Probably as a result of the rain the temperature topped out at 87 at the end of the ride. Humidity wasn’t too bad. Clouds kept the sun covered most of the time. Weather summary: start 78 (81% humidity, 72 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 4 mph; finish 87 (66% humidity, 74 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind variable 4 mph.

Some photos from the ride.

On the way back to Kingwood I rode on sections of the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway. On Forest Cove Drive construction equipment stood at a new bridge to be installed beside the road. Work is happening on that greenway which will eventually go to US59/I-69 through new Edgewater Park.

August 2021 Strava Stats – Still Summer

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

August is gone. Autumn’s approaching and with it pleasant weather conditions more favorable to bicycling and walking. Despite last month being wetter and cooler than usual, we only had three 100+ F days, one to end the month, and another two, two 99’s, and another 100 forecast to start September. So, it’s still summer in Central Texas. As I look back at my activity statistics, to the hottest month, I say this (quoting a former Texas governor who didn’t know the microphone was on): “Adios, mofo!” But hey, I’m not doing too poorly if you noticed I passed 30,000 lifetime miles the other day.

Weather is always a factor in outdoor exercise. Due to dermatologist’s orders to avoid …

Time for family rides

www.crosstimbersgazette.com

Let’s entertain for a few moments that summer begins to fade in North Texas and we ease into a nice, pleasant fall. Is that even a thing in North Texas? As the temps become more bearable, let’s consider dusting off our bicycles and getting outside. Here are a few basic maintenance tips before you and your family head out.

Bike Chain

If it’s been a few months since the bicycle has been ridden, you’ll want to completely remove the chain to clean it. Begin by brushing out the links with a firm brush (an old toothbrush works well). Using a cleaning solvent that is specifically designed for bicycle chains, completely immerse the chain, and allow it to soak until the …
