It felt like a sauna as I began today’s bike ride at 9:38 AM. The ride went south and east on my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Extended” route. The extended part took me north of FM 1960 on FM 2100 to Smith Road, west on Smith Road and back to FM 1960 on E Lake Houston Parkway. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike. The ride traveled 35.31 miles finishing at 12:29 PM. On Pinewood Bluff Lane another cyclist passed me going the other direction. Later at the church on Fairlake lane several cyclists were in the parking lot. I couldn’t tell if they were getting ready to ride or putting their bikes on the bike racks. I waved as I rode by. This was the 2nd time riding this route in 2021. My week is up to 141.58 miles setting a potential 200 mile week.
The sauna effect came from the high humidity and dew point at the start. The wind was light to calm not helping with cooling. Weather conditions: start 86 (81% humidity, 79 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 4 mph; finish 90 (59% humidity, 74 dew point), partly cloudy, wind calm. Cold water from my CamelBak was good during the ride.
While Strava said the ride was consistent with my usual efforts my legs felt tired. It took a long time to get my average speed to 13 mph. Some of that is the number of stops signs and traffic lights on this route compared to rides to the north.

Every year that I’ve done the Dragon Slayer, I’ve also led an ‘unofficial’ Dragon Slayer (2 lap) pre-ride on Labor Day. So here I am once again planning to jump into the DS this year, so I figured I’d try to keep this tradition going. Honestly my fitness is not really 2-lap worthy right now. But whether it be 1 lap or 2, it would still be a nice day of training and trail beta come Monday, September 6th.

August is in the rearview mirror and September arrived. A new goal for the month of 700 miles. I need to average 23.33 miles per day to make that goal. Today’s bike ride was a good start with 35.35 miles. The began at 9:26 AM and finished at 12:03 PM. For the second time this year I rode what I call the “Community Drive – Valley Ranch – Gene Campbell Blvd” route. I rode on my Canyon Endurace bike.
The month changed but the weather not much. Weather conditions: start 87 (75% humidity, 78 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 4 mph; finish 90 (64% humidity, 76 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph. More clouds than yesterday. Light wind let me ride in most directions without a strong headwind. Usually biking SE on FM 1314 is into a headwind but not today. (After I was back home it rained for a few minutes, The yard needed it.)

One drawback to riding NW on FM 1314 from Valley Ranch Parkway, several concrete companies spilled rock on the shoulder. A couple of times I rode over chunks of rock that could cause a flat. Thankfully the Continental GatorSkin tires handled them.

Fort Bend County District Attorney Brian Middleton remembers working the office’s “Running Against Violence†5K Fun Run when he was a new prosecutor in the late 1990s.
“I always thought it was a great public service to go outside of what a prosecutor’s office traditionally does to support those organizations that help crime victims,†said Middleton. “It was also a good time with my coworkers, an entertaining after-party, and hopefully good weather!â€
Over time, the foot race was discontinued and Middleton likewise moved on. But once …

Houston BCycle Station Finds New Home at 611 Walker It’s official, the newest Houston BCycle station is located on prime time real estate, at the Bob Lanier Public Works Building, 611 Walker! The installation of the Louisiana & Walker bike station took place on August 24, and some of our planners were able to see first-hand the delivery and set up of a BCycle station. The Louisiana & Walker Bike station is solar-powered and can dock 13 bikes at full capacity.
The Houston Permitting Center will also be getting a bike station in the fall. The two bike stations will provide an important connection between the two facilities and allow city employees and customers to commute back and forth on a bike, and bypass the hassle of driving and parking. The bike station formerly located at City Hall will be relocated to Bagby Street and Walker in October, which is the estimated timeline for completion of the Bagby Street improvements.
