About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cooler Start, Other Cyclists Out, 200 Mile Week

Texbiker.net Posted on September 4, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 4, 2021

As sunrise gets later today’s bike ride started at 8:18 AM, later than previous Saturday bike rides. Fall is a couple of weeks away. The temperature was 10 degrees cooler than when yesterday’s bike ride began. The ride went south and east to FM 2100 where I turned north to Huffman, back over Lake Houston, and south into Walden before heading back to Kingwood. I call this my “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route. This marked the 4th time on this route in 2021. I thought I rode it more often but that belongs to my “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden” route due to the construction along FM 2100. I needed 27 miles to hit 200 for the week and rode 32.24 miles to accomplish that. I saw numerous cyclists along the route once I got to FM 1960 and Atascocita Shores Drive (they are in the video). I completed the bike ride at 10:51 AM, the earliest finish this week.

It felt good riding with the sun rising up above the trees.

The coolness felt good at the start. The high humidity contributed to the cool until I warmed up. I almost opted to use one of my new Polar water bottles rather than my CamelBak but I knew it would be hot by the time I finished. Good choice. Plenty of sun this morning. Weather conditions for the bike ride: start 76 (98% humidity, 75 dew point), a few clouds, wind calm; finish 86 (68% humidity, 75 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 4 mph. No wind to speak of though as I started riding west over Lake Houston a headwind developed but about midway across the lake it gave up.

Riding north along FM 2100 on the sidewalk some sections the weeds hang over the concrete with a few approaching big sizes. I ducked below some of them. After passing Lake Houston United Methodist Church the sidewalk ends and I moved to the shoulder and behind the barrier until it forced me back to the road. The orange barrels left enough room for me to ride to the right of them. At some point as the construction includes this area I will not be able to do this. I saw more of the new southbound lanes getting paved.

Houston’s newest loop, The Orbit, gives bicyclists a new route through H-Town

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

You really need to bike more, and Joe Cutrufo agrees.

That’s why the executive director of BikeHouston, a cycling advocacy group, conceptualized The Orbit – a looped bike route fit for beginners and experts alike that explores some of the best spots the inner city has to offer.

"I pulled up a map and pinned locations that both locals and visitors would want to check out if you’re in town for the weekend or looking for something to do," Cutrufo said. "There’s a lot of places that are off the beaten path." …

A Time To Remember On The Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 3, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 3, 2021

Two years ago today my wife passed away from breast cancer. Today’s bike ride took me to the cemetery to visit her grave. I started earlier than yesterday at 9:29 AM and finished at 12:06 PM. The route went north to Caney Creek where I made the u-turn to return to Kingwood. I call this the “Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood” route. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike for 32.09 miles. I frequently ride this route with this the 14th time in 2021. Today’s distance was slightly longer than the average. The week now totals 173.67 miles, setting up a 200 mile week with tomorrow’s ride.

9-3-2021 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood-FM1485-Kingwood Route

At the beginning of the ride the sky was mostly blue but clouds started to crowd out the blue with some gray ones. I hoped I could finish without getting rained on. After finishing I heard some distant thunder and weather radar showed some rain to the southwest. The clouds held the temperature down. Weather conditions: start 86 (80% humidity, 79 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 4 mph; finish 87 (60% humidity, 72 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 14 mph. I didn’t notice the increased wind too much except when I rode east on Azalea Blvd. to the frontage road. Watching the clouds as I ride to see what is ahead.

My legs had enough power to build up my average speed to 14.1 mph on the way back to Kingwood. The average speed dropped when I entered Kings Manor and Kingwood with stops and starts.

Signaling your intent while bicycling makes you more predictable and reduces your risk of a crash with a driver. When making a left turn, ride in the center or center-left of the lane and signal early to discourage impatient drivers from trying to pass you as you turn. https://t.co/PwHdu8zjv7
