About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Another good day on the bike while leaving the Texas hills behind

By David Freeze | www.salisburypost.com

Editor’s note: David Freeze is riding from the West Coast to the East Coast along the southern border. Email him at david.freeze@ctc.net.

Day 25:

I got more sleep last night than I usually do at the Budget Motel in Bastrop, Texas. I was really happy with the room and up and out at first light with a plan. I wanted to finish off the current segment, but knew that there would be challenges.

Already at 80 degrees for a low, the humidity was high and close to 100 degrees was predicted. I needed close to 90 miles to reach Navasota, the last town on map segment four.

I took State Road 21 out of Bastrop and battled no bike shoulder and heavy early traffic until the shoulder widened just enough to keep the bike on it. Next came a …

Bikers prepare for Hotter’N Hell week with Grava Del Fuego pre-ride

by: Markeshia Jackson | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — As Wichita Falls prepares for the 40th annual Hotter’N Hell Hundred, some local bikers have gotten a head start on preparations for the big ride.

The Hotter’N Hell Hundred is a Texas “ride” of passage, and while riders come from near and far to experience one of the biggest cycling events in the nation, some like Ryan Raeke, say their favorite part is just getting to ride.

“Just hanging out with your friends [and] other people that ride bikes because your all from different walks of life, lawyers, doctors, mail man, nurse, but we all have something in common; it’s just …

The Cove House Classic August 14, 2021 Copperas Cove, Texas

Roy and Christine | roy-pedalpushers.blogspot.com

Line up time was 7:00 a.m. I am not sure of the count, but there was a good turn out. This was our first time to ride at Copperas Cove.

We had riden Lampasas just a few years ago, so we knew there were plenty of hills. This is Hill Country afterall. If one has a long memory, Lampasas was the ride when we had an 11% grade hill before we ever got out of town. …

The Full Monty Spring Creek Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on August 23, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 23, 2021

I wanted to start biking before 9 AM this morning but things got in the way delaying my start to 9:11 AM. Close but not quite there. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike as I set out to the Spring Creek Greenway. Today I rode all the way to I-45. My biking schedule is different this week with no riding on Friday or Sunday. To hit 200+ miles I needed a long ride today and I got one. I rode 50.42 miles, the longest bike ride since June 12th at the Mesquite Rodeo Road Ride. Today’s miles moved me to within 55 miles of reaching 800 miles for August, my goal for the month. 2021 YTD hit 6,534 miles, 213 miles ahead of 2020.

I keep hoping the greenway at I-45 extends farther but not yet. Recent rides on the Greenway did not go all the way to the end. The last time I rode the full distance was 7/1/2021.

8-23-2021 YTD Bike Rides Spring Creek Greenway
8-23-2021 YTD Bike Rides Spring Creek Greenway

A number of other cyclists were out on the greenway, more than my last ride there. You can see some of them in the video.

Another reason to start early: high temperature this afternoon forecasted at 99. The trees provide more shade than roads which helps with the heat. I put extra ice in my CamelBak along with a couple of snacks. Weather conditions: start 84 (76% humidity, 75.6 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 4 mph; finish 92 (47% humidity, 68.6 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 4 mph. I finished at 1:34 PM before the heat usually arrives. When I finished my CamelBak was almost empty. Arm sleeves and sunscreen today.

I stopped for about 15 minutes at John Pundt Park on the way back to the I-69/US59 trailhead. Sitting in the shade eating the snacks and drinking cold water was good.

On the way back to Kingwood I had to detour on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway at Sunrise Trail where workers were removing some of the concrete trail. Fortunately the detour was easy to figure out.

Gallery of photos along the greenway.

Several top results from Strava segments. Not all show up below.

Sour Lake bike ride, wine tests helps Humane Society for 10th year

Meagan Ellsworth | www.beaumontenterprise.com

The Sour Lake community came together Saturday to raise funds for the Humane Society with a bike ride and wine tasting.

Dozens of people participated in the 10th annual bicycle ride, which invited pets to tag along for free this year, said Event Coordinator Mary Carter.

“It was just perfect,” she said.

It’s the fourth year for Carter to coordinate the five-hour event, which began at Bruno & George Winery, which is located at 400 Messina and where Carter works.

“Working out here, I enjoy any of the events,” Carter said. “They are just so …

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

We’re deep in the heart of Texas and COVID-19’s fourth wave, with allegedly only two (2!) ICU beds available for an 11-county, 2.3 million person region. That news is real and dire, but somehow the beds seems to expand when more staff become available. But with the Governor Hey Abbott! getting infected with the virus himself this week, after his horribly out-of touch, anti-science, and anti-mask mandate law, it’s strange days indeed. Almost enough to write a follow-up to The Coronacles of Blarneya, Part II. Instead of that unpleasantness, it’s best to go outside and exercise those lungs in the fresh air and sunshine — the latter being the best disinfectant, after all. Anyway, it …
