About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Rain, Bike Ride, Thunder Wrapper

Texbiker.net Posted on August 19, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 19, 2021

Rain, bike ride, and thunder wrapped around today’s bike ride adventure. It began at 10:04 AM and finished at 1:27 PM with me racing to avoid any rain the thunder might be sending my way. Today I rode my “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route though I wasn’t sure if I would actually complete it. The ride covered 38.71 miles improving the week’s total to 155.28 miles. This was the 7th time following this route. Today’s mileage fit into the average for the 7 times. I’m closing in on my 800 mile goal for August with 629.38 miles.

Not a fast ride today with my legs not responding very well. I think the humidity and dew point sapped some of the power. The rain before the ride amped up the humidity. Damp roads disappeared as I made my way out of Kingwood. Later I got some mud sprayed on my legs while riding on the sidewalk beside FM 2100. I made it through the standing water earlier on the sidewalk. I think it was about 8″ deep. The mud caught me by surprise. In Huffman I stopped at the Chevron station to wipe my legs and shoes off. I don’t care for mud.

The weather summary: start 83 (93% humidity, 81.1 dew point), partly cloudy/rain before starting, wind S 4 mph; finish 86 (76% humidity, 77.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph.

At Ramsey Road I stopped for about 15 minutes to rest and eat a couple of snacks before heading back to FM 2100 and Huffman. I found some shade sitting on the guardrail and the breeze felt good. Getting to Ramsey Road required riding into a headwind bogging down my speed. The cold water from my CamelBak countered the heat.

As I reached Huffman I noticed the dark clouds gathering and the thunder increasing. From there until the finish I pedaled as hard s I could to beat the potential rain to the finish. The wind gusts pounded me as I rode across Lake Houston slowing me down. The thunder activity picked up as I rode from FM 1960 back to Kingwood. I wondered if I would beat the rain but I did.

Video: A San Antonio CEO completes 9,000-mile bike ride to give attention to senior care

Alicia Barrera | www.ksat.com

SAN ANTONIO – During the past four months, a local CEO shifted his duties to embark on a 9,000-mile trek on an electric bike to raise awareness for senior care.

Jeff Slater, founder and CEO of Caring Senior Service in San Antonio, biked across the country to visit each of the company’s offices and raise $100,000 for grab bars to be installed in local seniors’ homes. The journey is part of the company’s 30th anniversary and the Close the Gap in Senior Care movement.

For every $250 raised, Slated said the safety product company VGM Live at Home and Evacare will install two grab bars in senior’s homes.

It was a tough journey both physically and mentally. So much so that …

Earlier Start Reward

Texbiker.net Posted on August 18, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 18, 2021

I learned to start earlier from yesterday’s bike ride trying to avoid the rain. I started today’s bike ride at 8:49 AM and finished at 11:16 AM. There was a brief encounter with light rain but I kept pedaling. The route headed north from Kingwood through Porter, New Caney, over the Caney Creek bridge then under the highway to start the ride back to Kingwood. I call this the “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” which I ride frequently. So far in 2021 I biked this 13 times. Today I biked 31.64 miles bumping the week’s total to 116.58 miles.

8-18-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

With the light wind I built my average speed up to 14.2 mph for several miles. At the start the sky was partly cloudy but as the ride progressed the clouds gathered. After finishing the ride I heard thunder several times and .13″ rain fell so my early start avoided this. Weather conditions: start 86 (78% humidity, 78.1 dew point), fair, wind calm; finish 90 (62% humidity, 75.1 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 8 mph.

By John Clark | kdhnews.com

Riding buddies Dwayne Facemire and Owen Sutton said they were not sure what to expect from last Saturday’s Cove House Classic Bike Tour, but whatever the outcome, they planned on having a good time.

“Not sure how hilly it’s going to be, but we’ll see,” said Facemire, a 60-year-old resident of Burnet participating for the first time in the Cove House ride, as the sun rose over First Baptist Church parking lot along Avenue B. “Owen and I ride 43 miles every Wednesday and we do spin classes.
