About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Hotter’n Hell 100 Saturday Bike Ride, Wichita Falls

Texbiker.net Posted on August 29, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 29, 2021

I left the hotel just before 6 AM headed to the starting area. I found a spot in an closed Izzuo dealer’s lot. Unloading my Canyon Endurace I got ready to ride to the 100k starting block. The sun was beginning to peak above the horizon. While waiting beside me was a couple and the husband was riding a Canyon bike. I asked him if it was and Endurace and he said no, it was the Ultimate but he had thought about the Endurace, We continued talking. I learned they were from Garland and this was his wife’s very first bike ride. She was doing the 25 mile route and he was doing the 100 mile. He purchased the Canyon 2 weeks ago. He previously rode a track bike so this was a big change. His wife had a nice mountain bike. Later he caught and passed me after his wife made the turn on the 25 mile ride. When the national anthem played and the planes flew over I hear the cannon shoot at 7:05 but it wasn’t until 7:23 the 100k pylon moved to the right that the ride began.

Weather: start 71 (96% humidity, 70 dew point), fair, wind SE 3 mph; finish 88 (55% humidity, 70 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 14 mph.

I saw two people down from crashes. The first was a lady in the grass. She was trying to get up but a man dressed like her told her to not get up. Not too long after that an ambulance turned off of a side road and headed in her direction. The second was in Burkburnet on a street. A man sitting on the pavement with several people around him looked dazed. Later a Burkburnet Police car passed with lights and sirens going towards there passed. I hope both are doing good.

Wind wasn’t bad until the route turned to the south. The 3 mph SE wind had grown into a 14 mph headwind. I battled it from about mile 47 until the 12:11 PM finish. I stopped at the 5th rest stop around mile 53 to rest up, eat a cherry snowcone and chocolate chip cookies, refill my CamelBak, go to the Porta Pottie before riding back into the headwind.

Riding through Shepherd Air Force Base is always thrilling with the cheers of the airmen and airwomen on the side of the street as the bikers ride by. This year was no different. You can see this in the video. Since my last HH100 in 2015 the exit from the base changed some. From there it was about 4 miles to the finish. Probably half of those miles were on a bike lane on the shoulder. The lane was mostly smooth. Many miles of the ride was on chip seal roads. My Canyon handled the vibration pretty good and I survived. Before rest stop 2 the road was very smooth asphalt but with some hills. The price you pay for smooth roads.

As in the past I skipped the first 2 rest stops to avoid the crowds. The ones I stopped at the volunteers were very friendly, held my bike while I went to the tents, and well supplied.

A batch of metals show up on my Strava activity page. Click the image below for more information about them

What I Saw At Hotter’n Hell 100 On Friday And News

Texbiker.net Posted on August 27, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 27, 2021

I arrived at the MPEC parking lot around 3:50 PM. Walking to the building I gazed at the bike on the back of many vehicles. The video takes it from there. Please excuse the video editing. I left my mouse at home forcing me to use the trackpad which is hard since I don’t use it much. No transitions between the clips.

Time To Visit, SD Card Failure, Shorter Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 26, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 26, 2021

With a time constraint today I rolled out on today’s bike ride at 8:55 AM. I chose a shorter route to fit the time heading south and east to E. Lake Houston Parkway on FM 1960. I call this my “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike. Finishing at 11:26 AM I biked 28.93 miles, the shortest ride so far this week. Saturday will make up for the short ride. After 4 bike rides this week the total is 156.52 miles. This was the 5th time biking today’s route. Today’s mileage fits the average for those rides. August now totals 851.62 miles surpassing my 800 mile goal.

8-26-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

Lots of blue sky for the bike ride. Wind was light but a headwind riding east over Lake Houston tested my legs. The return over Lake Houston had a light tailwind but I gladly took it. Overall weather conditions: start 84 (76% humidity, 75.4 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 6 mph; finish 90 (61% humidity, 75.2 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NE 8 mph.

Early in the bike ride I encountered lots of traffic at Kingwood Park High School. This was the first time I ran into this since school started a couple of weeks ago. Not sure why today was different.

For some reason the GoPro MicroSD card recorded the video clips but I couldn’t access them. I used Recuva to get the files but the first clip was messed up. I wanted to try editing the video on my Acer Spin 713 Chromebook but reverted to my Windows 10 computer.

When I rode through Walden I stopped and talked with a church member working in his garage. Later on Pine Place Drive another biker passed me going the opposite direction. We exchanged hellos.
