About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Pedestrian And Bicyclist Deaths Continue To Climb

www.txdot.gov

AUSTIN – Despite a decrease in traffic crashes in 2020, Texas saw a dramatic rise in the number of people killed walking and biking on our roadways. Last year, 731 people died in pedestrian-related crashes, an increase of 9% from 2019. Crashes involving bicyclists claimed the lives of 82 people, up from 68 deaths the previous year. These numbers reflect an alarming trend of pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities increasing over the last five years.

Pedestrian and bicyclist deaths account for one in five of all traffic fatalities in the state. Safety officials attribute this growing concern to people’s widespread failure to follow state laws designed to protect pedestrians and bicyclists. To that end, the …

Early Start Biking to Huffman and Back

Texbiker.net Posted on August 12, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 12, 2021

I surprised my self starting today’s bike ride at 8:58 AM. Much earlier than yesterday. I was able to finish before the weather heated up at 11:29 AM. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route going 33.14 miles. I now need 46 miles to make a 200 mile week. Today marked the 10th time riding this route n 2021. I wasn’t the only biker out today when another passed me on Kings River Drive on the way back to Kingwood. 409.34 miles so far in August, over halfway to my 800 mile goal. 2021 YTD miles continues to lead 2020 now by 18 miles.

Texas Biking News August 11th 2021

Texbiker.net Posted on August 11, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 11, 2021

Who are the US riders in the Vuelta a España 2021?

By Tim Bonville-Ginn | www.cyclingweekly.com

The Vuelta a España is just a few days away now and with a a-list looking start sheet set to roll off the ramp in Burgos on Saturday, August 14.

There is a good amount of interest for American fans with seven riders from the States taking part from five different teams – UAE Team Emirates, Team Jumbo-Visma, EF Education-Nippo, Trek-Segafredo and Team DSM.

… Lawson Craddock – EF Education-Nippo

Lawson Craddock is is one of the most solid riders in the pro peloton and it is surprising that he hasn’t won more than once in his career.

That win came in the national time trial championships in Knoxville, Tennessee where he beat the likes of Chad Haga (DSM) and the retiring Tejay Van Garderen (EF Education-Nippo).

The rider from Houston, Texas, also came fifth in the US national road race. Away from that he was close to winning the mountains standings at the Dauphiné where he finished second.

But his early season did have four DNFs and low placings along the way. But it does seem he is on the way to good form again with a good ride at the Vuelta a Burgos. …

… Chad Haga – Team DSM

The ever dependable support rider, Chad Haga is set to ride his 12th Grand Tour for Team DSM and while he has only taken two wins in his career, one at the Giro d’Italia, he is still worthwhile to have in the team to support the team’s leaders.

Haga isn’t in the team for his own results, aside from National Championships where he came sixth in the road race and second in the time trial this year, but he is in Spain to look after the main men of the team.

Romain Bardet and Alberto Dainese will be those riders at the Vuelta.

The 32-year-old from McKinney, Texas has only raced twice since the Nationals in Knoxville. Clásica San Sebastián, won by fellow American Neilson Powless (EF-Nippo), was a race Haga did not finish followed by a good ride in the Vuelta a Burgos as he and his team tried to defend Bardet’s overall lead. …

Musician rides across America raising money for other musicians who can’t play during COVID

Author: Hank Cavagnaro | www.kvue.com

… One of the industries that was hit harder than most by the pandemic was the music industry.

The industry that Austin knows well is now being helped by a musician who’s hoping to help those who can’t perform right now.

A musician’s life is changed when they pick up an instrument.

Nate Cook knows what it means for musicians when they can’t do what they love.

"When the coronavirus really took full-force last March, I had a couple of opportunities [that] carried me through almost the entire thing, but I know a few of my musician friends that didn’t have it go that way for them," said Cook, the frontman for The Yawpers and a solo musician as well. "So, I wanted to do something to give back." …

… "The route, so far, I started in Manhattan," Cook explained. "Initially, the plan was to play aside concerts in select cities: Chicago, New York, Tulsa, Dallas, Austin, Phoenix and Los Angeles"

But as Cook made it into Texas, things changed. Spikes in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths caused him to re-look at the shows.

"Mohawk is maybe one of my favorite places to play in the entire country, so not getting to play this time has been a real bummer," Cook said. "Yeah, so that was a real letdown. We’ll see what happens." …

Biking Spring Creek Greenway, Ending With Thunder

Texbiker.net Posted on August 11, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 11, 2021

Today’s bike ride was on the Spring Creek Greenway. I didn’t start as early as I wanted because I slept in late. My Lynskey R300 bike rolled away at 10:35 AM. The temperature was already 90 degrees and I hoped the trees along the greenway would offer some relief from the sun. I didn’t expect many people on the greenway with school starting and being Wednesday. At the trailhead only a few cars awaited their owners return. I guessed the ride would be 37 to 38 miles but turned out to be 39.99 miles. My week now totals 121.22 miles getting me closer to a 200 mile week. August miles is getting close to the halfway point of my goal with 376.2 miles. This marked the 10th ride on the greenway this year.

8-11-2021 YTD Bike Rides Spring Creek Greenway

I stopped at the Carter Park trailhead and took these photos.

At John Pundt Park I stopped for about 20 minutes to rest, cool off in the shade with a slight breeze, and eat a couple of snacks. The water in my CamelBak was still ice cold which tasted good with the snacks. I headed back to Jesse Jones Park where I stopped for a few minutes to return a phone call. This was about 2 1/2 miles from the I-69 trailhead exit. As I rode to the exit I heard thunder to the south. With the trees I couldn’t see the sky widely. At the exit I looked to the south and saw some dark clouds. Up and over the San Jacinto River bridge I got a better view of the clouds to the south. From there to the 2:21 PM finish thunder sounded frequently. Back home and inside some rain drops fell but not enough to wet the driveway.

A few other bikers were on the greenway. Most of them I saw twice as I rode to Pundt Park and then back.

On the ride back to Kingwood I rode on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway. I came across a work crew sandblasting greenway concrete west of Woodland Hills Drive.

Overall weather conditions: start 90 (59% humidity, 73.3 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 6 mph; finish 92 (57% humidity, 74.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph.

I used my new Wahoo Tickr Fit heart rate monitor. It worked great. Wahoo will send a new charger pad in the next few days.
