About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

TxDOT working to combat rise in pedestrian, bicyclist deaths on El Paso roads

kfoxtv.com

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — This summer TxDOT is taking its pedestrian and bicyclist safety campaign to cities around the state to remind people—whether they’re driving, walking, or riding a bike—to follow the rules of the road and watch out for each other.

On Saturday, People at the El Paso Downtown Artists and Farmers Market got to see TxDOT’s highly visible “walking billboards” carrying messages reminding pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers of laws to follow to …

Some Heat Followed By Rain On Kingwood Streets Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 8, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 8, 2021

The bike ride began at 1:35 PM with many clouds in the sky. Some of them looked wet but since it wasn’t raining I rode away on my Lynskey R300 bike. With the late start the route was a combination of streets In Kingwood. Some of the streets were not familiar but most were. There was a strong 12 mph wind from the south, the direction I headed to after riding west into Woodridge Forest. I wasn’t sure how long the ride would be but by the 2:58 PM finish I rode 17.43 miles. The week ended with 235.67 miles. In 2021 I biked Kingwood streets 10 times.

The dark clouds moved around as I biked. I hoped they would away but as I entered the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway a few raindrops hit me. That stopped but around 15 miles as I rode beside the lake the rain returned with more than just a few drops. I stayed on the greenbelt taking advantage of the tree cover as shelter. Whenever I came out in the open I got wet. As I emerged from the greenbelt around 17 miles the street was wet but no rain falling.

Overall weather conditions: start 94 (55% humidity, 75.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph; finish 83 (88% humidity, 79.4 dew point), light rain, wind S 9 mph.

Two new top results on Strava.

Biking Fishing & Mountain Climbing At Lake Wichita

My new bike rolled me to Lake Wichita for the first time this morning.

And, now that I have a speedometer/odometer attached I know how many miles that particular bike ride is.

9.54 miles.

I saw a lot of people enjoying the outer world today, including multiple people fishing, such as …

666 Consecutive Cycling Days: The Devil Is in the Details

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Well, that just happened. Riding my bike for 666 days in a row is a benchmark I figured would eventually pass if I just kept going. As for those who think the number has some special significance, or to the members of the Church of Satan, who are skeptical atheists who do NOT worship Satan or believe the devil is a real entity but rather “…as an archetype of pride, individualism, and enlightenment”: no offense. I just like the symmetry of the number. That should be evident from my biking 6,666.66 miles in 2020. I called it the …

Walk Around Closure, A Few Bikers, TickrFit Blip, Big Glob of Gum

Texbiker.net Posted on August 7, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 7, 2021

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got to FM 2100 on today’s bike ride. I also didn’t know if I would see any other bikers. The bike ride began at 7:54 AM as I rode away on my Canyon Endurace bike. I thought the route would be “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden” if Old Atascocita Road was closed like the flashing sign warned on my Thursday ride. Possibly the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route could be an option if there was a way around concrete work.

I saw the same two bikers from the beginning of last week’s bike ride as they rode north on Hidden Pines Drive. I wasn’t prepared and fast enough with the GoPro to catch them on video. I thought they might be the only bikers I saw today. But later as I rounded the curve on Fairlake Lane 3 lady bikers came from the east. One yelled that I could walk around the closed area to get across FM 2100. The video shows the construction area. Later I saw 2 other bikers on FM 1960. I think they didn’t know they could walk around the closed section.

With the early start the temperature had not hit the 80’s yet but the humidity and dew point were high to make it muggy. By the 10:31 AM finish the temperature went up but the humidity dropped some. I still was soaked with sweat at the finish and whenever I stopped or bent my head down a stream of droplets fell to the road. Overall weather conditions: start 76 (99% humidity, 75.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind calm; finish 88 (63% humidity, 73.9 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 5 mph. cold water from my CamelBak tasted good.

The bike ride went 32.33 miles making it a 218.24 mile week. With one day left I may add to that number. Surprisingly 2021 YTD miles and 2020 YTD are equal at 6,026 miles.

Checking SportTracks I found that I only rode today’s route 3 times in 2021. I ride the similar ” Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden” route more often due to the construction on FM 2100.

8-7-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route
8-7-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

Near the end of the ride on Deerbrook Drive the rear tire developed a thumb on each rotation. I thought something stuck in the tire but a quick glance didn’t show anything. I hope it wouldn’t turn into a flat so close to home. I kept pedaling and finished the ride without a flat. At home I turned the rear tire to find a big glob of chewing gum stuck to the tire. It was sticky. I tried ice cubes to make it easier to get off but that didn’t help much. A squirt of WD-40 and a putty knife got most of it off. I followed up with a wipe and removed the remnants of the gum.

My TickrFit heart rate monitor stopped around the 4 mile point. I decided not to mess with trying to get it working and continued riding. After about a minute it started showing BPM on my Bolt computer. Good thing I ordered a replacement.
