About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Riders stop in Evanston during 4,000-mile journey

By: Kayne Pyatt | uintacountyherald.com

EVANSTON — A group of 25 young men and women on bicycles rode into Evanston after spending 11 hours and 15 minutes that day biking from Soda Springs, Idaho; a journey of 125 miles. The group is one of four teams comprised of 80 students from the University of Texas in Austin participating in a 70-day bike ride called Texas 4000, raising awareness and money to fight cancer.

Texas 4000 is the longest annual charity ride in the world, completing a 4,000 mile journey from Austin, Texas, to Alaska. Texas 4000 was named the …

TickrFit End of Life? Still Below Normal But Changing Tomorrow

Texbiker.net Posted on August 6, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 6, 2021

Another great weather day for a bike ride. I managed to start a few minutes earlier at 10:16 AM. The route took me north over Caney Creek before going under I-69/US59 to begin the ride back to the south to Kingwood. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike. I label the route, “Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood. The ride went 31.47 miles getting within 15 miles of a 200 mile week at 185.91 miles for the week. August increased to 205.23 miles with a goal of 800 miles. 2021 YTD dropped behind 2020 YTD by 3 miles. With a shorter ride today I finished at 12:46 PM.

Checking SportTracks I found this was the 11th ride on this route in 2021. 7 times on my Lynskey R300 and 4 times on my Canyon Endurace. The Lynskey is getting close to 5,000 miles.

I use a Wahoo TickrFit heart rate monitor during rides. Lately it started acting strange. It would pair and then lose connection with my Bolt computer. After a ride I put it on the charger and after I remove it the green sensor light comes even though I turned it off. Before today’s ride I couldn’t get it to turn on but I pushed the button several times in different positions and it started. It worked for the ride but I don’t know if it will tomorrow. I got it as a warranty replacement 8/20/2018 and it has 25,590 miles of use. I suspect the battery is wearing out from the number of charges. So I ordered a replacement. It should arrive next week.

August weather continued to be below normal during the ride. Conditions today: start 86 (64% humidity, 72.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind calm; finish 87 (59% humidity, 71.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 7 mph. At the end of the ride I saw salt stains on the red arm sleeves even though it wasn’t that hot. With the light wind I got my average speed up to 14.2 mph on the way back to Kingwood. The forecast says tomorrow will be closer to normal temperatures in the 90’s.

Austin seeks public input for updates to sidewalks, urban trails, bicycle plans

By Benton Graham | communityimpact.com

The city of Austin is kicking off the process to update its sidewalks, urban trails and bicycle plans.

The city last updated the three plans in 2014. Since then, voters have approved $306.5 million for urban trails, sidewalk and bikeway programs in 2016, 2018 and 2020.

Centering equity will play a key role in those plans. The city acknowledges previous investments have left communities of color behind in terms of access to transportation, health and safety, city officials said.

Katie Wettick, Austin’s urban trails program manager, said projects such …

Disc Brake Fiddling, Upcoming Road Closure, Unusual Weather

Texbiker.net Posted on August 5, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 5, 2021

Another bike ride start at 10:24 AM for the third day in a row. Stage 3 of the Vuelta a Burgos finish kept me from starting earlier. I chose a route to the south and east to ride on my Canyon Endurace bike. Before starting I fiddled with the rear disc brake using a business card to adjust the spacing of the disc to the caliper. I don’t know if it made much difference. I think the chain needs waxed to quiet it and then I can listen for the brake rubbing. I thought I rode today’s route (Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman) more than the previous 3 times but maybe I combined the similar “Atascocita South – Walden – FM 2100” route. I biked 35.47 miles getting me in good position for a 200 mile week with 154.45 miles so far.

YTD Combined Bike Rides on Atascocita - Walden routes
YTD Combined Bike Rides on Atascocita – Walden routes

Combining the two similar routes I biked them 7 times in 2021. Today’s mileage kept YTD 2021 11 miles in front of YTD 2020.

Unusual August weather for today’s bike ride. The temperature stayed the same at the 1:10 PM finish as the start. To compliment that the humidity and dew points went down between the start and finish. This made it feel cooler but near the end I looked at the blue arm sleeves and saw streaks of salt from sweating. Weather conditions: start 86 (54% humidity, 67.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 12 mph; finish 86 (49% humidity, 64.9 dew point), overcast, wind SE 5 mph. The strong headwind didn’t stay strong when I turned to the west hoping for the tailwind version.

At FM 2100 a big flashing signed alerted drivers that on August 6th at 6 PM until August 9th at 5 AM Old Atascocita Road would be closed at FM 2100. I think the closure is for pouring concrete. The high weeds covering the sidewalk along northbound FM 2100 met the mower. The mower left some but it was much better. My Saturday ride will stop at FM 2100. I wonder how the other bikers will handle this, especially coming from the east on Old Atascocita Road.

While waiting for the traffic light to change at FM 1960 and FM 2100 I chatted with two men collecting donations. One of them I met before and the other was new to me. Their group does that each Thursday.
