About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

10 Seconds Of Rain, Strong Headwind

Texbiker.net Posted on August 2, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 2, 2021

When you bike as often as I do coming up with different routes is a problem. Today I rode my “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route and after finishing and checking SportTracks I was surprised to find this was only the 4th time I rode this route in 2021. Starting at 9:42 AM was good with a chance of afternoon showers. I finished at 12:51 PM without hitting any rain. Well, some rain came down for about 10 seconds on Gene Campbell Blvd. causing a brief concern. You can see the clouds in the video. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike going 38.33 miles. Of the 4 times riding the route today was the longest but not by much. 2021 YTD miles (5846) now exceeds 2020 YTD by 9 miles, up from 1 mile yesterday.

8-2-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

Wind was strong today. At the beginning it was 8 mph but by the finish it jumped to 13 mph with 21 mph gusts. Biking west on Gene Campbell Blvd. was hard with the headwind. At the time I knew it was strong but I didn’t realize it was that strong. Making the left turn onto FM 1314 and riding SE the tailwind was nice. Overall weather conditions: start 86 (76% humidity, 77.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 8 mph; finish 88 (63% humidity, 73.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 13 mph gusts 21 mph. Lately the wind has not been this strong.

During the bike ride I captured the Strava Local Legend on Briar Willow to Lodge segment.

Goat chasing cyclists

Honest Tree | www.youtube.com

This is the 3rd iteration of a new ride that D.A. is organizing. At the beginning of the video, a goat was chasing us (which is why I turned on the camera). About 80 miles with a high of 99F. Not for the faint of heart.

Tour de Kingwood Trails Bridges

Texbiker.net Posted on August 1, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 1, 2021

Starting the bike ride at 1:42 PM it was hot. To lessen the heat I rode the Kingwood Trails with the shade from the many trees. As I prepared to ride I thought of what trails to ride and came up with today’s combination. The feature on the trails: wooden bridges or least bridges with wooden floors. I rode my Lynskey R300 across a number of bridges but not all of them. There are more on trails I didn’t bike today. A previous ride on the trails featured various village pools. I wasn’t sure how long the ride would be but I finished at 3:31 PM after biking 19.31 miles. Wrapping up the week my total came in at 234.86 miles. With the 1st day in August I kicked off a new goal of 800 miles and now only need 781 more miles. I thought with the shorter ride 2021 YTD would trail 2020 YTD by more miles but now 2021 leads by 1 mile at 5,807.

The Lynskey R300 maintenance installed the new Robert Axle Project thru axles. No repeat route during the week. The trip to Galveston started the week’s bike rides. This marks 10 weeks in a row at 200+ miles.

There was one bridge I tried to find in Trailwood Village that crosses the Ben’s Branch drainage ditch. The bridge is rather long with a steel frame and wood deck. I know the west side location but not the east side where I rode.

8-1-2021 YTD Bike Rides on Kingwood Trails

Bike rides on the trails are not fast. I ride slowly because I never know what is around the next curve or group of trees. Today on one section a girl on a Razor type scooter came around a corner and I needed to move to give her room.

Weather conditions: start 92 (56% humidity, 73.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 6 mph; finish 92 (56% humidity, 73.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph. At one point when I came off the trails in Kings Forest Village the street was damp from a brief shower. I felt a couple of drops earlier in Trailwood Village.
