About 20 bike enthusiasts took to the streets in Texas City for a community bike ride at dusk on Friday.
The informal event, organized by Texas City residents Jojo Skinner and Tre Hernandez along with other bike lovers, is part of a growing movement of similar events.

The 1-mile Irving Heritage District project between Sowers Road and Strickland Plaza aims to reenergize the downtown center.
After years of planning, design and public input meetings, the Irving City Council awarded a construction contract for $22.2 million on July 22 for improvements along Irving Boulevard.
Irving Boulevard reconstruction is the main public infrastructure project in the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District No. 2 and supports the city’s Road to the Future program. The 1-mile construction project will improve the pedestrian experience by creating a more walkable downtown. Improvements include roadway paving with parallel parking; drainage, water and wastewater system upgrades; and pedestrian and bicycle transit enhancements. …
The bike lane ends? And then what? I have to turn around? #Weslaco and other towns in the #RGV are filled with randomly starting and ending bike lanes that are never more than a line of paint. A cycling network only makes sense when the individual lanes connect. pic.twitter.com/ZHYPNl0ZQ1
My earliest start for a bike ride in July, maybe even June. Out the door and rolling on my Canyon Endurace bike at 7:47 AM. I was thinking other bikers probably started earlier than that and meeting on FM 1960 and east. I biked my usual Saturday route, “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden”. This was the 16th on the route so far in 2021. If you add in the same route with different order of “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” the count is 12 more times. Two mileage events came with the 32.37 miles I biked today: a 215.55 mile week and 1027.67 mile July. One day left in the week so it that could go higher. I only missed biking one day which helped getting those miles in July. I searched my online bike logs and can’t find another month over 1,000 miles. That’s a lot of biking for an old retired man. 10 consecutive weeks of 200+ miles.
7-31-2021 July Bike Rides Summary
Average miles per ride: 34.25. Longest bike ride: 48.3 miles on July 12th, Spring Creek Greenway. Average riding time per ride: 2 hours 34 minutes.
Early in the ride I encountered two bikers (see the video) and chatted with them for a couple of minutes. Our rides split in Woodridge Forest. I met another biker as I rode beside Kingwood Drive but he came too quickly to get in the video. The other bikers are in the video. I saw more this week than last week.
Humidity was high with the early start. The dew point was just below the temperature. This meant lots of sweating and when I finished at 10:11 AM my shorts and jersey were soaked. My CamelBak cold water tasted great as the temperature rose during the bike ride. Weather conditions: start 77 (99% humidity, 76.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind calm; finish 87 (72% humidity, 77 dew point), partly cloudy, wind calm. The wind didn’t pose much of an issue. Maybe a stronger breeze would’ve helped cool me.
When I reached FM 2100 men worked on fresh concrete flanking Old Atascocita Road. At some point traffic on Old Atascocita Road will need to move right or left for concrete to be poured. This is encouraging progress on FM 2100 opening for biking.
The reigning gold medal BMX racing champion is on the mend after a terrible crash at the Tokyo Olympics on Friday.
Connor Fields, of Plano, Texas, clipped a competitor’s bike with his front wheel, which caused him to lose his balance and crash during the first turn in a semifinal run, according to Sports Illustrated. He collided with two other racers and was unable to get back up by himself.
Fields previously won gold in men’s BMX at the 2016 Rio Olympics for Team USA and was considered the favorite in Tokyo.
Unfortunately, the 28-year-old was not able to compete in the final because he was hospitalized shortly after the crash. …
Bikeways Safety Improvement Projects Are Moving Forward
Monthly Planner Newsletter – City of Houston Planning Department
Houston’s future as a multimodal city starts with projects that make streets safer and more comfortable for all modes. One big part of that is building out the City’s Bike Plan which outlines 1,800 miles of high comfort bike facilities all throughout the City. In July, we focused on three bikeway projects, on which PD is working with Harris County Precinct One:
Cavalcade-Homestead Healthy Connection Corridor: Road users on these streets experience crashes at a rate five times higher than the Texas average, and 25% of fatal crashes involve people walking and biking. The project will improve streets in Kashmere Gardens (a Houston Complete Community) and Trinity Gardens, including improved sidewalks, crosswalks, traffic signals, bus stops, and a new bikeway.
Blodgett and Cleburne Bikeways
Following up on nearly a dozen public engagement events since 2018, design concepts are now being developed for bikeways on one or both of Blodgett Street and Cleburne Street based on community input to improve east-west access in the Greater Third Ward, especially between TSU, Contemporary Learning High School, MacGregor Elementary school, and the Wheeler Transit Center.
Calhoun-Griggs-MLK Healthy Connections Corridor The corridor is currently proposed as an approximately 7-mile street redesign encompassing three street segments: Calhoun Rd from Wheeler Ave. to Griggs Rd.; Griggs Rd. from Tierwester St. to Beekman Rd.; Martin Luther King Blvd. from Griggs Rd. to the Sims Bayou. Read more on the Let’s Talk Houston engagement page.
The proposed corridor redesign is aligned with the City’s Vision Zero commitment to end traffic deaths and serious injuries and improve street safety for everyone who walks, bikes, uses a wheelchair and drives. This includes street redesign to slow vehicle speeds, a barrier-protected bikeway, intersection enhancements to make it safer for people walking and biking to cross the street, and transit improvements to make bus stops more comfortable and to improve route efficiency.
FORT WORTH, Texas — Josiah “JoJo†Dunn was riding his bicycle on the 3200 block of Strong Avenue when a truck hit him and continued driving. The incident was caught on a doorbell camera, and dozens of internet sleuths, led by the child’s mother, shared the video on social media. …

After yesterday’s bike ride when I saw a section of the new San Jacinto Bayou Greenway I didn’t know about I decided to incorporate it into today’s bike ride. I modified a route I used 6 times before in 2021. I kept the same route name because most of the route was the same, “Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch”, but inserted San Jacinto Bayou Greenway before riding to Oakhurst. Then at FM 1314 I rode NW to loop by Porter High School before returning to FM 1314 and the usual roads in the route. This bike ride covered 33.01 miles which is longer than the other times I biked the route. With those miles I’m well positioned to hit 200 miles for the week and over 1,000 miles for July with one day left. The week sits at 183.18 miles and July at 995.3 miles. So far I’ve missed only one day of biking.
7-30-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route
While the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway is new to me it is not for a bunch of Strava bikers. I notched a personal record on the Super Secret 4×4 Shortcut (1:08) segment but 10 others beat my time.
