About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Unexpected Axle Benefit, Spring Creek Greenway Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 29, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 29, 2021

Continuing a variety of bike ride routes this week I rode the Spring Creek Greenway today. I left home at 9:56 AM riding my Lynksey R300 bike. Instead of riding the entire greenway to I-45 I just went to John Pundt Park and then back. This is the second time I rode this portion of the greenway this year. I rode 40.02 miles, just enough to get this week’s total to 150.17 miles. July went to 962.29 miles. This is the most miles in a month since June 2015. Overall this year I rode the greenway 9 times, 3 of those in July which is out of the ordinary when I usually ride just 1 time per month. On the way back home I took the new sections I found on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway. This marks the 28th biking day out of 29 in July.

7-29-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Spring Creek Greenway
7-29-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Spring Creek Greenway

It got hotter today. The greenway offers more shade than biking on roads so it was a good choice today. Weather conditions: start 87 (67% humidity, 74.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind NW 6 mph; finish 92 (53% humidity, 72.5 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 7 mph. I stopped at John Pundt Park before heading back to the I-69/US59 trailhead for a rest break. The CamelBak kept the water cold. I ate a granola bar and a cereal bar.

I didn’t think I would notice any difference riding the Lynskey with the new Robert Axle Project axles but the disc brake rubbing was gone. In some situations the discs would rub with the Lynskey thru axles. I think being able to tighten the Robert Axles more kept the wheels from moving and rubbing. Plus they look cleaner.

Biking the greenway is not a speed test for me. Some bikers zip by me but I try to keep a steady pace around 14 to 15 mph slowing on the inclines. There were some bikers today but not that many. Most of them I saw riding in each direction.

Strava recorded 4 top results. Click the image to go to the activity page on Strava.

SAN ANTONIO — The bicycle boom that started during the pandemic is now in a different gear.

Explore more on a Texas-sized outdoor adventure

ByMaryellen Kennedy Duckett | www.nationalgeographic.com

Among the quintessentially Texas places to play outdoors is Flat Rock Ranch, a mountain biking venue located on the Dreiss family cattle ranch northwest of San Antonio.

Outdoor recreation options in Texas are as big and wide as the state, thanks to a mind-boggling mix of landscapes. There’s desert, rugged mountains, and wind-sculpted sand dunes in the far west; beaches, marshes, pine-hardwood forests, and swamps in the east; and prairies, plains, plateaus, and rolling hills in between. Texas also has at least 3,000 caves and sinkholes, some of which, such as Natural Bridge Caverns north of San Antonio, are open for subterranean tours.

Add abundant sunshine and temperate weather conditions into the equation and Texas adds up to be a year-round destination for outdoor adventure. So, …

40th Annual Hotter’N Hell Hundred Looking For More Volunteers

newstalk1290.com

The 40th Annual Hotter’N Hell Hundred is less than a month away. The event officially opens on Thursday, August 26th, and runs through Sunday, August 29th. You can be a part of this event even if you don’t ride a bike.

While all of the cycling and running events take place out in the Texas heat that the event is named for, there are still plenty of volunteer positions available inside, under the air conditioning.

Darlene Craddock, the Hotter’N Hell Hundred Volunteer Coordinator, tells us that after taking 2020 off to hold the event virtually, some of her volunteers are not available this year and she’s a bit short-staffed. She went to great lengths to tell us that the positions she’s needing help with are …

Rain Cooled New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 28, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 28, 2021

Last night we got about 4/10″ of rain which cooled the weather down slightly for the start of today’s bike ride. In the sun it was hot but the shade felt cool. It began at 10:02 AM as I rode away on my Canyon Endurace bike. I chose the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” for the distance it provided. I wanted to get closer to a 200 mile week. I biked 41.59 miles, about average for the 5 times I rode this route in 2021. Those miles moved the week to 110.15 miles and July to 922.27 miles. They also closed the deficit to 2020 to 15 miles. It hasn’t been this close in many week. YTD 2021 is up to 5,683 miles. I could ride 1,000 miles this month.

7-28-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route
7-28-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

My legs felt good and the wind was light allowing me to get my average speed up to 14.2 mph for most of the ride back to Kingwood. No other bikers crossed my route except two young boys riding their bikes with fishing poles in Tavola. You can see them in the video. Lots of blue sky though the clouds increased to the south.

Weather conditions: start 85 (70% humidity, 74 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 6 mph; finish 89 (58% humidity, 72.5 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NE 5 mph. It was hot when I finished at 1:28 PM. You can see how much I sweated at the end of the video.
