About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

No Singing While Biking In The Rain

Texbiker.net Posted on July 8, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 8, 2021

I aired up the tires on my Lynskey R300 bike before starting today’s bike ride. To get an earlier start I didn’t watch the Tour de France. Wheels rolled away at 9:54 AM as I began the “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route.

The weather radar showed rain along I-10 to the south. Being optimistic and wanting to ride 30+ miles the first 9 miles went as planned. But as I rode south over the San Jacinto River light rain began to fall. Hoping I would ride out of it I kept pedaling. The light rain stayed with me. Then when I turned onto Kings Park Way I thought the rear tire felt soft. I thought about continuing on to the library but decided to stop at the gazebo at the park. The gazebo had a bench and roof to get out of the rain as I checked the tire.

Removing the rear tire it didn’t take too long to find a piece of sharp rock stuck in the tire.

  • Rear tire flat problem

I hoped the patch kit glue was okay, roughed up the tube, and squeezed glue over the area. The glue dried quickly, I applied the patch and put the tube back in the tire. Aired up the tire and it held pressure. I put the tire back on the bike and headed out.

Light rain from then on for the rest of the ride. Not my favorite weather but no lightning and not heavy rain. I decided the light rain seemed more riding into the wind than with a tailwind. I didn’t ride all the way to FM 2100 to avoid the construction mud. Turned around and rode in light rain but with a tailwind most of the time.

Yesterday I learned that my Wahoo bolt V2 computer can screen capture the ride so I set it up for today’s bike ride. It worked. Now I need to figure out how to add it to the video after the first clip ends.

7-8-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary on Today’s Route

So far in 2021 I used this route 9 times. I think the other 8 were without rain.

My week total stands at 134.04 miles. With 3 biking days left a 200 mile week looks possible if the rain permits. July is at 272.07 miles, 34% of the way to my goal.

Go for a Bike Ride with Donkeeboy and Donkeemom

By Kelsy Armstrong | www.houstoniamag.com

The mother-son duo will celebrate their latest mural, “Bike Through H-Town” on July 14.

Name a better partnership than Donkeeboy and Donkeemom. You can’t, can you?

On Wednesday, July 14, the artistic mother-son duo will unveil a new mural downtown called “Bike Through H-Town.” Promoting the importance of getting outside and exploring the city by hopping on a bike, the mural was painted with Bosch eBike Systems, which makes the bikes in Houston’s ride-share system, B-Cycle.

This mural is part of a greater initiative by Bosch to promote cycling in a city where …

Hit the trails

By Sydni Ellis | wylienews.com

I learned how to ride a bike on a pink glitter bicycle with white wheels, a cute basket, and rainbow tassel handles. As a kid, I spent countless hours exploring the neighborhood streets with my matching pink helmet. Recently, I’ve been enjoying biking once again on different local trails. It’s a great way to get some fresh air, enjoy nature, and burn calories — Harvard University says bicycling at 12-13.9 mph can burn anywhere from 240-336 calories in 30 minutes depending on your starting weight. That’s some serious motivation! If you’re ready to hit the trails, check out a few of these local Texas spots this summer. …

How friendly are Arlington streets for pedestrians and cyclists?

By Kailey Broussard | www.star-telegram.com

Members of Walkable Arlington discuss the Center and Abram Street intersection with Victoria Farrar-Myers, District 7 city council member, right. The trio was part of an audit of downtown safety conditions and motorist behavior in June. Kailey Broussard

A new advocacy group is advocating for a more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly city, and its members want to help residents assess their neighborhoods’ needs.

Members of Walkable Arlington, a fledgling nonprofit led by UT Arlington students, are compiling recommendations for city government to improve walking and biking downtown. Preliminary ideas are as simple as installing bike racks or changing pedestrian walk times, and longer term, including converting Center and Mesquite streets to two-way and incorporating protected bike lanes.

Several of the ideas are already folded into …

CCGG – Leave everything out on the gravel edition…

Alex Maldonado | www.strava.com

Dropped from 18t to 17t on the perfect day to try it out. Solo tempo the entire time. I think I may actually have been faster in the headwinds than the tailwinds today.

Fixed gear bikes are stupid… Riding to the ride is stupid… The flatlands are the worst!

Finally a group – just on a way back..Still ☺️

Katya @Cool Cat Cycles | www.strava.com

Typically I’m stuck in the middle between very fast group that takes off while I’m still climbing over the gates 😀 and party pace. Well today I actually had a good group to stay with on a way back. Thanks guys! 🙌

Monday’s Unfinished Bike Ride Completed Today

Texbiker.net Posted on July 7, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 7, 2021

The clouds in the video look great. Stage 11 of the Tour de France kept me home until the conclusion but when it finished I got ready to bike. The weather forecast said the rain should stay south of I-10 until later encouraging me to think “dry bike ride”. After yesterday’s bike ride I waxed the chain on my Canyon Endurace and before leaving at 11:17 AM today I aired up the tires to 90 psi. I chose the route I didn’t get to finish on Monday for today’s bike ride, “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch”. At the 2:10 PM finish the Bolt computer said 41.21 miles. Those miles bumped the week to 101.83 miles and July to 239.87 miles. So far in 2021 I biked this route 4 times.

7-7-2021 YTD bike Rides Summary on Today's Route
7-7-2021 YTD bike Rides Summary on Today’s Route

The last time was a month ago. Interesting that the distance of each ride is so close. Some other numbers: 2021 YTD miles come in at 5,000; 2021 now trails 2020 by 109 miles, lower than yesterday. My Canyon Endurace rolled to 23,012 miles.

The unusual cool temperature continued today. According to Space City Weather the clouds and moisture in sky keeps the temperature below normal. Weather conditions for the bike ride: start 79 (78% humidity, 71.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph; finish 84 (68% humidity, 72.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 6 mph. I wore arm sleeves for sun protection but maybe to avoid some coolness too. It may get hotter next week. The sky while biking north through Tavola caught my eye. In the video I show what it looked like in the opposite direction.

Wind conditions and freshly aired tires allowed me to build up my overall average speed to 14.8 mph. My legs felt good too.

By Christina Cavazos | www.news-journal.com

The Longview City Council on Thursday approved awarding a $1.1 million contract to Reynolds & Kay Inc. of Tyler for the a reconstruction of Cargill Long Trail. Funding comes from a voter-approved 2018 bond election, and the price tag came in under the city’s $1.25 million budget for the project.

The project includes a complete reconstruction of the trail, which the city initially acquired in 1971. An extension was added in 2001. The trail features an asphalt surface, and Parks and Recreation Director Scott Caron said …
