About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Rain Looked Likely But I Rode The Canyon

Texbiker.net Posted on July 6, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 6, 2021

Looking at the weather radar before starting today’s bike ride I wasn’t certain I would finish the route I had in mind. Radar showed rain surrounding Kingwood but far enough away for the route to be out of the yellow and green of the radar. I stuck with my rule that if it isn’t raining start the ride. I can always turn back, stop or keep pedaling if rain comes.

The Canyon Endurace was the bike for the ride, giving my Lynskey R300 a day off to recover from yesterday’s wet ride. We rolled away at 10:15 AM following my “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route. If the rain got me there are several other routes I can fall back to. This would be the 4th time I biked this route in 2021.

7-6-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route
7-6-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

Today’s 38.97 miles was the longest of the 4. I think the increase in distance came in the first 4 miles as I varied some streets on the way to exit Kingwood. With 2 rides so far this week I’m at 60.63 miles. July moved to 198.67 miles, just shy of 25% of the way to my 800 mile goal. YTD 2021 stands at 4,959 miles. 2021 still trails 2020 by 116 miles. That difference has not changed much recently. Last year on July 6th I rode 32.3 miles so today closed the gap by about 7 miles.

I should’ve taken a screenshot of the radar before I began the bike ride. As I followed the route the clouds parted some letting a few patches of blue come through. July is supposed to be a hot month in Houston but not for this bike ride. Weather overview: start 80 (81% humidity, 74 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph; finish 82 (78% humidity, 74.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph. I finished the bike ride at 1:20 PM before the usual peak temperature. The normal temperature for this date is 92.7, 10 degrees higher. I wore a new pair of arm sleeves for sun protection but they seemed to cool my arms too.

When I reached Ramsey Road I turned left and then I saw what looked like another biker at the bridge. Because the clouds looked wet to the southeast I didn’t stay long after saying hi to the biker. I didn’t want to take a chance of getting wet again.

The ride back to Kingwood generally enjoyed a tailwind. This allowed me to increase my overall average speed to 13.8 mph.

After the ride I finished watching stage 10 of the Tour de France and waxed the chain on the Canyon. The chain made squeaky sounds during the ride. I think riding in the wet took a toll on the chain.

Punched The Weather Forecast, It Punched Back

Texbiker.net Posted on July 5, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 5, 2021

After two days of no rain when the forecast said it was going to I must’ve scoffed at the rain forecast today. I paid the price after I started the bike ride at 9:59 AM.

Since yesterday’s bike ride I had been trying to think of a different route for today. I settled on biking my “New Caney – Roman forest – Valley Ranch” route. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike.

Weather at the start looked okay but the NOAA weather app showed rain to the southwest. I figures it would go away since I rode to the north. As I biked through Elm Grove Village in Kingwood I felt light rain for a few minutes but kept on riding. A little later more light rain through Sherwood Trails. In the video you can see how that progressed while I rode into Woodridge Forest. When I reached Knox Drive going west to the I-69/US59 frontage road the sky to the north was raining. On the frontage road the water puddles signaled the rain was just ahead of me. I made it to E. Wallis Road when the rain picked up. No nearby cover so I turned right onto E. Wallis Road. At Loop 494 I found Van’s Auto Repair with a small overhang and stopped there for about 10 minutes.

Rain slowed and I moved to Loop 494 north. It was wet with standing water in places. I only made it to the next intersection, E. Martin Drive, when the rain increased. Turning left I thought there might be shelter but as I rode back to the frontage road the rain let up some. At the frontage road the road was wet but only a light rain fell. Boldly I went north but I could see rain falling ahead. I made it to Gorilla Steel when it started raining hard and stopped at their office. I waited there for almost an hour as waves of rain passed, let up for a few minutes and then hard again with a stiff wind.

I left Gorilla on wet streets with light rain and rode to the Valero station on the frontage road. I stopped there for a few minutes until the rain stopped. At that point I changed the route to “Kingwood – FM1314 – Kingwood” because the sky looked wet to the north and the frontage road in front of the new Amazon warehouse was most likely coated in mud from the construction traffic. I don’t like mud. Making the u-turn at FM 1314 I wondered when was the last time I rode this route. After finishing the ride at 12:59 PM I looked it up in SportTracks to learn it was 6/18/2018. According to my notes that ride had rain and fog. It was 18.29 miles while today I rode 21.66 miles. Last Monday I didn’t bike at all because of rain. I’ll take the 21.66 miles even if rained on. It helps get to a 200 mile week and don’t need to make up for 0 miles.

I’ll try to ride to Roman Forest on Wednesday.

Driver bumps woman off bike and gets shot by another bicyclist in SE Houston

abc13.com

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A man and woman were riding their bikes on the street Sunday in southeast Houston when a driver reportedly used his vehicle to knock the woman off her bike before getting shot at.

In Search of Miles and July 4th Markers

Texbiker.net Posted on July 4, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 4, 2021

The final biking day of the week and I needed 21 miles to get a 200 mile week. After church I set out at 12:20 PM biking “Kingwood Streets” on my Canyon Endurace bike. A weather forecast of rain proved to be a dud and I rode 26.19 miles pushing the week’s total to 205.68 miles. With 6 riding days I had to hustle for those last miles. I averaged 34.2 miles per ride. July miles improved to 138.04, 17% of the way to my 800 mile goal. A summary of the week’s bike rides.

7-4-2021 Week Bike Rides Summary
7-4-2021 Week Bike Rides Summary

That makes 6 weeks in a row of 200 miles. Out of the last 11 weeks, 10 have been 200 miles.

I hoped to see plenty of July 4th decorations but not many out. I recorded some on the video. I did see 3 other bikers.

I did get to wear a new pair of Primal Prisma shorts as you can see in the video.

Strava surprised me with two medals.
