About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

My Dad’s Last Tour de France

Ian Dille | www.outsideonline.com

I fell in love with cycling while watching the Tour each year with my father. When he was dying last summer, it became so much more than just the world’s biggest bike race.

… A few years after my dad retired, my parents moved back to Texas, where my brother and I lived. They arrived in Austin not long after my first kid was born, in 2013. By the time kid number two arrived a few years later, they’d become an integral part of our support system. On weeknights, they’d pick up my three-year-old daughter from preschool and drop her off at our house.

On the warm winter evenings leading into 2020, I’d stand at the top of our short but steep driveway and watch them unload. My 76-year-old dad, square bodied with an envy-worthy head of cleanly cut hair, would challenge my daughter, “Race ya to the front door!” She’d take off before he could finish the sentence.

One day, I noticed that by the time my dad reached the porch, he’d begun breathing heavier than usual. Soon he no longer had to feign a tight race with my daughter. Eventually, despite her pleas, he told her he just wasn’t up to racing. …

Specialized now offers drop shipping with SmartEtailing

www.bicycleretailer.com

Boulder, CO —Specialized Bicycles has released a new digital service for retailers called “S-Fulfillment,” which integrates with SmartEtailing’s Supplier Fulfillment technology.

Approved retailers are now able to drop ship select Specialized products directly to consumers who purchased on the bike shops’ SmartEtailing website.

“There is tremendous demand for Specialized products and our data clearly shows that customers are buying online from their local shop,” shares SmartEtailing president Ryan Atkinson. “This integration helps consumers get Specialized products delivered to their homes faster while shops can reduce inventory and payroll costs for ecommerce orders.” …

… Neil Bremner, the owner of Texas’ Bike Barn and a Specialized dealer is excited to use this program. “Online sales continue to grow and are an important part of our business. We like drop ship programs because they improve our customer experience by providing quicker delivery. It’s been a great solution for Bike Barn.” …

Did I Get Fooled By The Weather?

Texbiker.net Posted on June 29, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 29, 2021

When I finished watching stage stage 4 of the Tour de France the sun shined on my driveway and backyard. Encouraged about biking after missing yesterday due to rain I dressed for today’s bike ride. Based on the weather I saw I planned on riding my “Atascocita – Walden – FM2100” route. I needed 51 miles to put June at 902 miles. Missing Monday meant only 2 days left and that route would be about 32 miles towards the 51.

Rolling away at 11:02 AM on my Lynskey R300 bike to the north the weather looked like what I saw earlier but over my shoulder to the south dark clouds filled the sky. I started to doubt my route choice and began to think riding north might be better. I held that thought as I rode through Elm Grove Village and Sherwood Trails Village heading west. As I approached Woodland Hills Drive light rain began. To the south the dark clouds looked full of rain so I turned north. But I didn’t ride far as the rain picked up. I headed for Kingwood Park High School for shelter. As the video shows, its a good thing I did.

Taking shelter at 11:15 AM the rain came down with thunder in the area but no visible lightning. The rain started slowing down after 24 minutes. Since it moved north I decided to stick to my original plan and ride south. As I rode south on Woodland Hills Drive the rain stopped. The sky still contained clouds but I rode on. By the time I was on W. Lake Houston Parkway the road was barely damp and dry by FM 1960.

Because I added some streets while still in Kingwood I changed to my “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route to still get the miles but not expose me too much to any returning rain. The bike ride ended at 1:58 PM covering 32.39 miles of the 51 miles I needed. Now I only need 19 miles tomorrow. The reason for the 51 miles is for June 2021 to meet or exceed June 2020. June 2021 totals 883.83 miles. Rain is still in Wednesday’s forecast but at a lower percent. A 200 mile week looks questionable now with the rain. YTD 2021 now trails 2020 by 115 miles; not as much as I thought it would be.

This was the 4th time riding this route in 2021, equally shared on each bike.

My new gloves got a taste of biking in the rain.

The original @SH71_Express project proposed a wide lane for people to walk & bike in along with 70 mph cars(!) or possibly a shoulder. Due to their decision at @CAMPOTexas, the project instead included separate paths, typically with a barrier or wide buffer from highway lanes.

Eddie’s Hell of the South

Drop Bar, Texas: A cycling podcast By Paul | anchor.fm

Gravel for the roadie purist. That’s what Eddie’s Hell of the South (EHOTS) sounds like to me. Described as "a 50 mile multi-surface slug-fest that is culminated in festivities and camaraderie at its completion," what’s not to love about it? David Hernandez stops in to talk about this race that was previously an underground, invitation-only event in The Valley.
