About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Checked out the new temporary bike lane and permanent four way stop at 34th and Shoal Creek

The four way stop is a huge improvement. That is normally a very unsafe crossing. The protected lane is nice and should allow kids to bike to St Andrews, but less important than the stop pic.twitter.com/HlDp8TdRCv

Paused TdF to See Local Bikers

Texbiker.net Posted on June 26, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 26, 2021

Saturday morning bike rides with the prospect of seeing other bikers motivate me to get started earlier than on weekdays. Today was no exception with wheels down on my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike at 8:26 AM. The route that has proven to pass other bikers is my “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden” one.

Following my 2021 route start as I ride out of Kingwood, the Kings River and W. Lake Houston Parkway intersection came at just over 9 miles into the bike ride. It didn’t take long after that to start seeing other bikers. I believe they are heading home having started much earlier than me. You can see many of those bikers in the video clips from today’s bike ride.

I biked 31.31 miles today pushing the week’s total to 221.91 miles and June to 851.44 miles. As I mentioned yesterday 2021 YTD miles (4693) now trails 2020 by 46 miles, up from yesterday due to a longer ride last year on this date. Tomorrow (Sunday) will be a rest day since I biked each day this week so far. I averaged 36.98 miles per ride this week.

With the 8:26 AM start the weather had not heated up yet but humidity and dew point were high. By the 10:51 AM finish the temperature went up and humidity and dew point dropped some.

The Texas sun is tough on red biking gloves. A pair of Pearl Izumi red gloves I’ve been wearing for several months faded to pink. Yesterday I received a new pair from competitive Cyclist and put them to work on today’s bike ride. I bought XL size instead of L to make getting them off easier. The mesh back and gel pads make them comfortable.

Of the 11 rides on today’s route, this was the earliest by 6 minutes, beating 6/19/2021.

While I was out biking Strava sent me an email telling me I lost the local legend on the “Old HEB Alley” segment.

Texas Biking News June 25th 2021

The 50-mile trail around Dallas: When White Rock to Trinity Forest will open and why that matters

By Sharon Grigsby | www.dallasnews.com

The 7.5 mile Spine Trail segment will mean that, for the first time, residents south of Interstate 30 “won’t have to use a car to get out of our neighborhoods.”

Walk a few yards down the rough dirt path alongside Military Parkway’s E-Z Tires — a part of southeast Dallas where even at 9 a.m. it’s easier to find a quart of whiskey than a decent tomato.

Look beyond the graveyards of abandoned tires and burned-out vehicles, of forlorn Christmas tinsel and children’s books. Beyond the dozen or more encampments of people living off the grid in tents and RVs.

In front of you unfolds a diamonds in the rough, a breathtaking, if mostly inaccessible, …

AUSTIN, Texas – As work continues on interim safety and mobility improvements to South Pleasant Valley Road over the Longhorn Dam bridge, the construction work zone will shift from the east side of the bridge to the west side during the early hours of Sunday, June 27. June Goal Reached, Now Biking to Reach June 2020 Total

Texbiker.net Posted on June 25, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 25, 2021

Started the bike ride at 10:05 AM, about an hour earlier than yesterday. I chose my “New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst” route not realizing this would only be the 3rd time biking it in 2021. I altered the route slightly when I arrived at FM 1314 headed north. Usually I continue on the frontage road but today I went right on FM 1314 to Loop 494 and turned left. Some of this is in the video.

6-25-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route
6-25-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

The distance was longer than I guessed coming in at 33.22 miles. Those miles put me over my 800 mile goal for June at 820.13 miles. My next goal is to repeat June 2020 of 902.84 miles. I’m within 10 miles of hitting 200+ miles this week. I should take care of that tomorrow. Also the gap between 2021 YTD and 2020 YTD narrowed to 34 miles. June 24th and 25th 2020 I didn’t bike while I did this year. The gap will widen after tomorrow because last year I rode 44.1 miles on June 26th and I plan on biking 31 miles tomorrow.

Weather Summary 6/25/2021

It heated up during the bike ride. The humidity was just below the temperature at the start time but did go down by the time I finished at 12:42 PM.
