About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Early Before The Heat | Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on June 18, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 18, 2021

Began today’s bike ride at 9:39 AM. With no bike races to watch I am getting and earlier start. The bike today was my Canyon Endurace CF SLX. Heading north I rode my “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route covering 37.65 miles. This was the 6th time on this route in 2021 evenly spread across both of my road bikes. The week is up 180.97 miles. A 200 mile week looks possible with tomorrow’s bike ride. I reduced the difference YTD between 2021 and 2020 to 140 miles, down 4 from yesterday. Here is a summary of the 6 rides on this route. Today was the longest in miles.

6-18-2021 Bike Ride Summary YTD Kingwood-SH242-Kingwood
6-18-2021 Bike Ride Summary YTD Kingwood-SH242-Kingwood

Where I made the u-turn at SH 242 was the scene of a bicyclist and vehicle collision earlier this week. It happened late at night while I rode through in bright sunlight today. Construction work closes some lanes with barriers. During the day traffic gives me room but at night visibility can be a problem. I am not sure of the bicyclist’s condition or if he was killed.

When I checked the weather as I got out of bed it showed the temperature at 69, cool for a June morning with lots of sun and no clouds. I expected it would heat up a lot by the time I started riding but it was 83 and by the time I finished at 12:36 PM it was only 87. Riding in the shade in felt quite comfortable. Weather details: start 83 (60% humidity, 67.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 7 mph; finish 87 (50% humidity, 66.4 dew point), fair, wind E 13 mph. The forecast calls for mid 90’s later.

Heading back south after the u-turn at SH 242 the wind helped me boost my average speed to 14.2 mph. As log as I rode south the wind helped but going to the east a headwind tried to make riding hard and generally succeeded.

Will TxDOT’s Plans for Loop 360 Leave Cyclists and Pedestrians in the Dust?

Reviewed by Benton Graham | www.austinchronicle.com

In its current form, Capital of Texas Highway – Loop 360 – on Austin’s western edge is hard to imagine being used by most pedestrians or nonathletic cyclists for either transportation or recreation. When not congested at rush hour, cars zip along the winding six-lane highway, where the posted speed is 60 mph. In the few locations where designated bike lanes do exist, they tend to be found in a narrow space between the middle and right turn lanes. Much of the time, the only bicycles one sees are the illustrations on the bright yellow bike-crossing signs. …

Texas woman uses her tragedy to show the realities cyclists face

By Jose Arredondo | spectrumlocalnews.com

SAN ANTONIO — When Samantha Flores and her boyfriend sat down for some ramen at Charity Bar in San Antonio, it had a bittersweet taste to it. Obviously not literally, but metaphorically because it’s a reminder of the philanthropy she could have done.

“It’s like this wistful far away feeling. For me, so much time has been focused on myself,” Flores said. “And I think about all of things I could have done for community and all of the charities I could’ve contributed to.”

Entering the restaurant, she was greeted by …

Lazy Bike Ride On Spring Creek Greenway to Pundt Park And Back

Texbiker.net Posted on June 17, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 17, 2021

The legs didn’t have much snap in them today so I made it a lazy bike ride out and back to Pundt Park on the Spring Creek Greenway. I rolled the wheels on my Lynskey R300 at 9:52 AM and ended the ride at 1:18 PM. The ride went 38.43 miles, about .7 miles longer than the bike ride last year on the same date. Not the same route though. Boosting my week to 142.82 miles there are enough days left to make 200+ miles. I maintained the same difference on YTD miles between 2021 and 2020 at 144 miles.

What the weather was like.

Not many people on the greenway today. Don’t know if Thursday is an off day or maybe the heat. I do enjoy biking there with all of the trees and shade. Not much wind today.

Sweltering Bike Ride To Calm Cool Sikes Lake

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

My bike took me north on the Circle Trail this morning, before it got too HOT to be fun to do such a thing.

Long before noon I stopped for a shady moment under a Sikes Lake gazebo, where I checked my phone to see the temperature was 90, with the humidity making it really feel like 93.

As you can see via the ripple-less water on the lake the air is …
