About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Every bike deserves a second chance

abc7ny.com

SEABROOK, Texas — Slow Twitch Niche is a small bike shop in the heart of Seabrook, TX. Owner Jeff Currier says the shop focuses on bicycle repairs and not new sales. However, the community initiative to help those in need is the reason everyone stops by.

What started as an effort to get someone a bike years ago – turned into a community effort to provide bicycles to as many people as possible who are in need. Those who have a bike and no longer need it, drop it off at the shop to donate. Currier and his volunteers work to recondition the bikes, getting them up and …

Sustainability grant will help improve campus walkability, air quality

FEBRUARY 1, 2021 — The UTSA Office of Sustainability has several alternative transportation projects planned for the next few years with the help of a $407,000 Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program grant through the Texas Department of Transportation.

UTSA’s grant will promote modes of non-motorized transportation that reduce the use of single-occupant vehicles through increased use of buses, walking, biking, scooters, skateboards, and electric vehicles.

The project will collect baseline data on transportation preferences, …

Bike Big Bend

www.nps.gov

Big Bend by Bike

Lightly traveled roads and varied terrain make Big Bend a premier bicycling location. Over 100 miles of paved roads and 160 miles of backcountry dirt roads provide challenges for riders of all types and abilities. Bicyclists must be extremely cautious and well-prepared, but bicycling allows outstanding panoramic views unobstructed by a windshield. It also allows the bicyclist to see and hear some of the smaller wonders of Big Bend from a more intimate viewpoint. Safety

Bicyclists must share the roads with vehicles and obey all traffic laws. Paved roads within the park are narrow and often have no shoulders. Bicyclists should take proper measures to stay safe, such as riding single-file, wearing bright and/or reflective clothing, and being away of their surroundings.

Traffic is sparse in summer and highest during March and early April and on holiday weekends throughout the year. Use extreme caution. Recommended Biking Routes: …

Two Climbs Up Box Hill Starts February Bike Rides

Texbiker.net Posted on February 1, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 1, 2021

What a way to start February bike rides with two climbs of Box Hill on the Greater London Loop with the Le Col Session Social ride. Distance: 26.7 miles and 1,476 feet of climbing. This is the second longest Zwift bike ride since I started. The longest was November 15th, 2019 at 28.11 miles but only 275 feet of climbing then. My goals for February: 400 road miles and 100 Zwift miles. After today I am 26% of the way to my Zwift goal. This was my second time riding this course.

Looking back on January in Zwift I thought about how much it cost to ride there: $.0498 per mile (325.8 miles, $16.23 subscription cost) or $.827 per hour (19:38 hours, $16.23 subscription).

The ride leader encouraged everyone to stay together for the first 25 to 30 minutes which most did. After that everyone set their own pace. I hung with a group until then. Around 40 minutes into the ride I lost contact and then rode with individual riders who I caught or caught me, usually going up a climb. Box Hill is a bear as is the climb out of the subway near the end of each lap with 14% while Box Hill averaged 5% climbs.

From ZwiftPower.com I finished 59th which isn’t too bad considering the climbing. Box Hill stands out in the profile.

More Miles Than Planned On Watopia Ocean Lava Cliffside Loop, January Wrap Up

Texbiker.net Posted on January 31, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 31, 2021

I didn’t feel like an event bike ride in Zwift. Getting home from church after going to the cemetery to visit my wife’s grave on our wedding anniversary I thought I would just do a “free ride”. I chose one of the recently opened routes, Watopia Ocean Lava Cliffside Loop. The 11.8 mile distance and 511 feet of climbing appealed to me.

Starting at 1:49 PM the course was not crowded but other Zwifters passed by in both directions. I pedaled on the opening flat part settling in at 18 to 20 mph. As I rode the route I couldn’t remember the distance or climbing. I thought it was 11.5 miles and 557 feet but when I rode past 11.8 and no on screen noticed popped up I figured my memory was wrong and the banner would come up soon. Around 13 or 14 miles I began to question the distance and opened SportTracks to check on the previous bike rides on this route. One showed 12 miles and the other 15.37 miles. Obviously the 11.8 one was in my rearview mirror so I rode until 15.3 miles but still no banner. So I stopped at 15.5 miles. Extra miles on the last bike ride in January is not a problem, just not what I expected. Strava summary of the bike ride.

January biking has been busy both inside and outside. I biked every day but one. I exceeded my goals both Zwift and road. I biked 37 more miles this year in January than last year (651 vs 614). Below are the graphics for the month.
