About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Chill Factor Overcome After 2 Days – Bike Ride Kingwood Streets

Texbiker.net Posted on October 30, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 30, 2020

I pressed today’s bike ride with the temperature just .6 of degree above my 60 degree no ride threshold. The sun was out in full blue sky mode and the wind was only 5 mph. I bundled up in shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, wind breaker jacket, and half finger gloves. At 60 degrees I normally wear full finger gloves but in order to press the record buttons on the GoPro cameras I needed exposed finger tips. Early in the ride my fingers chilled but after a few minutes it went away or I forgot about it. I waited until 12:16 PM to begin biking on my Lynskey R300 bike. Before that I thought I about riding north to FM 1485 at New Caney but with the chill I changed to biking Kingwood Streets for 20.42 miles which put me with 9 miles of reaching 800 miles for October. I plan on biking tomorrow (Saturday) to get to and beyond 800 miles.

My video editing skills with the Garmin VirB Edit program improve with each ride. I practiced the last two days when I didn’t bike because of the weather. Adding gauges, creating different gauge templates and positioning them in the video consumes a lot of time so today I used a custom template I created yesterday.

The route today contained a few places where I increased my pace. One Strava segment named “Back2Branch” I rode south on N. Lake Houston Parkway for a 3rd personal record. The details are below.

Memorial Drive is getting a new bridge, but you won’t be able to drive on it

Anavid Reyes | www.click2houston.com

HOUSTON – A green and lush transformation over Memorial Drive is underway. We’re talking about a new bridge, not for cars but for people.

It’s called the Memorial Landbridge and Prairie and will be a big green space over tunnel lanes of traffic on Memorial Drive near Picnic Lane. This project is part of a multi-million dollar master plan to upgrade Memorial Park. However, in the meantime, it’s a construction mess. …

… Cyclists, drivers and pedestrians are left wondering, how will it impact traffic?

Memorial Drive will remain open during construction. Within the project area, traffic will be reduced from three lanes to two each way while a new section of Memorial Drive and the tunnel arch structures for the Land Bridge are completed directly south of the operating lanes. All lanes will reopen once construction is complete. …

Austin spends $883K on electric bikes as customers opt for easier ride

By Ryan Autullo | www.statesman.com

The city of Austin will spend more than $883,000 to purchase 325 electric bicycles after a study showed riders overwhelmingly preferred them to traditional bicycles that require more pedaling to move around town.

Austin City Council members approved the purchase Thursday through a contract with B-Cycle LLC, which has been the supplier of bikes for the city’s bike share program since 2013. The cost also covers docking stations.

The purchase includes 125 new electric bicycles plus the 200 existing bikes that have been on the streets since February as part of a …

Bicyclist circumnavigates state in 58 days

Steve Clark | www.brownsvilleherald.com

Aaron Chamberlain arrived at Xeriscape Park at the foot of Gateway International Bridge at 12:18 p.m. Wednesday, 58 days after departing from the same spot for a counterclockwise, circumnavigational bicycle tour of the state dubbed Vuelta de Tejas, or Tour of Texas.

A police vehicle siren sounded and a boom box blasted celebratory music as the Austin resident, wearing a flannel shirt against a stiff north wind, wheeled his dusty Salsa Journeyman gravel bike up to where a …

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

The shortage of bicycles has been a sign of increased numbers of people riding during the pandemic. But it’s made it hard to find a new bike if you are in the market. Today though I noticed that Sun and Ski Sports has a bunch of Cannondale bikes for sale. The men’s is black, sleek and yet heavier than expected. (I didn’t see any women’s but they’re yellow.) With a 2 x 5 set-up, 10 gears will get you zipping around town on short jaunts at least. They’re a cool …

Legends of the fall give a voice to bicycle safety message

Brice Cherry | wacotrib.com

The idea of muscle memory is summed up in one familiar phrase: “It’s like riding a bike, you never forget how.”

Guess what, though? If you fall off said bike, you tend to remember that, too.

Earlier this month, one of my colleagues in the local sports media suffered a bicycle accident he won’t soon forget. Matt Mosley, the (usual) host of the afternoon Matt Mosley Show on ESPN Central Texas radio, was riding his bike near his home in Dallas when he took a nasty tumble that ended up sending him to the hospital and leading to multiple surgeries.

While Mosley’s accident was far more severe, it reminded me of a time another …

County, TxDOT reach funds contribution agreement

Douglas Clark, Amarillo Globe-News | www.amarillo.com

Potter County has reached an agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation to contribute Right of Way funds earmarked for the State Loop 335 project. The Potter County Commissioners’ Court voted to approve the agreement during Monday’s regular session.

"This has been presented to us before, and then they found out it was going to be less than we thought – so we’re very happy about that," Potter County Judge Nancy Tanner said. "This is all part of the continuing Loop." …

… The Loop 335 project’s overarching goal, per TxDOT, is to upgrade the entire loop to a controlled-access freeway type facility consisting of main lanes, ramps, one-way frontage roads with bicycle and pedestrian accommodations and three-level interchanges: I-40 East, I-40 West, I-27 and US 87. …

More bike lanes, sidewalks coming to high-traffic Austin streets as part of 2016 mobility bond

kxan News | www.bizjournals.com

Projects approved as part of the 2016 mobility bond have received environmental clearance from the Texas Department of Transportation and can continue, the city of Austin announced Oct. 27.

In the city’s press release, the city says the South Lamar Boulevard project, from Riverside Drive to U.S. Highway 290, and the Burnet Road project, from U.S. 183 to the MoPac frontage road, can move toward construction as a result of the clearance.

“Environmental clearance is a critical milestone before construction can begin,” said Mike Trimble, the director of Austin’s Corridor Program Office. “We …

Off the road: Try the Purgatory Creek Natural Area in San Marcos on bike or foot

By Pam LeBlanc | www.austin360.com

I’ve been hammering out miles on my road bike for the past few months, riding loops around Northwest Hills, along Shoal Creek, and over that cool bike and pedestrian bridge at Barton Creek.

Lately, though, I’ve grown weary of pedaling the same routes. So when a friend invited me to join him for a spin on trails at the Purgatory Creek Natural Area in San Marcos, I left the skinny tires behind and loaded up my mountain bike.

I sometimes have a hard time finding mountain bike trails that fit my ability level. I’m pretty comfortable on knobby tires — until I’m stopped at the bottom of a hill, looking up a daunting escalator of boulders. I like the downhills better — as long as the stair-steppy rock doesn’t go …
