About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Physical activity a good investment during a pandemic

Lisa Mitchell-Bennett | www.valleymorningstar.com

When I first moved to Brownsvillein 1991, almost thirty years ago, there was literally one falling down private gym. There were virtually no walking or bicycle trails or infrastructure to speak of and sidewalks were a rarity. When I would cautiously ride my bike to work, at that time my only form of transportation, cars would honk and angrily yell “get off the road”! There were no hike and bike trails, or even bike lanes. There were very few parks, and the parks we had were pretty neglected.

Desperate for a place to exercise, I started offering free aerobics classes at the community center where I worked in the Cameron Park neighborhood. Women flocked to the free class, not because I had much skill as an instructor, but …

Steve Clark | www.themonitor.com

BROWNSVILLE — Aaron Chamberlain arrived at Xeriscape Park at the foot of Gateway International Bridge at 12:18 p.m. Wednesday, 58 days after departing from the same spot for a counterclockwise, circumnavigational bicycle tour of the state dubbed Vuelta de Tejas, or Tour of Texas.

A police vehicle siren sounded and a boom box blasted celebratory music as the Austin resident, wearing a flannel shirt against a stiff north wind, wheeled his dusty Salsa Journeyman gravel bike up to …

Blew Past October’s Mileage Goal As The Weather Cooled

Texbiker.net Posted on October 31, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 31, 2020

It took awhile to get today’s bike ride started. While waiting for the temperature to warm up I watched stage 11 of the Vuelta a Espana. I hoped it would warm enough that leg warmers weren’t necessary. The bike ride began at 12:32 PM and finished at 2:49 PM. I left the leg warmers at home. But I wore shorts, long sleeve jersey, and a wind breaker jacket as I rode the Canyon Endurace bike on a slightly different “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route. The difference came from not riding the longer loop on Cross Country Drive in Walden. When I started the ride I was going to skip Walden altogether but I wanted to ride at least 30 miles and adding the shorter section through Walden was just enough with today’s ride coming in at 30.51 miles.

Those miles accomplished two things: 104.23 miles for the week and 822.29 miles for October. The daily average for October was 26.53 miles, including 6 no ride days. They also improved the year to date to 8,177 miles. This is the most miles in a month since July when I rode 923 miles. I exceeded my 615 mile goal for October by 207 miles. One goal I am behind on is indoor cycling for the year: the goal is 800 miles and I am at 542 miles. With the arrival of November weather I probably will work on the indoor cycling goal. The last time I rode indoors was back on April 4th on Zwift. Recaps of the month and year to date comparison of bike rides.

  • 10-31-2020 October Bike Rides summary
  • 10-31-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status
  • 10-31-2020 Strava Year Progressions YTD Miles

According to the Golden Cheetah program I spent 49% of the riding time in power zones 3 through 7. Strava says the ride was consistent with my usual efforts. While the wind was light at times it seemed like a headwind was trying to slow me down. I built my overall average speed up to 14.2 mph by the time I rode north on W. Lake Houston Parkway back into Kingwood.

Weather conditions: start 70 (60% humidity, 55.7 dew point), a few clouds, wind N calm; finish 72 (52% humidity, 53.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind variable 4 mph.

Tour de Texas: I Just Biked Around the Entire State

BY AARON CHAMBERLAIN | www.texasmonthly.com

I made it—3,014 miles in 58 days. There were a few times I had my doubts, as in the Panhandle town of Booker, where I felt very close to calling it quits. I’ve had some difficult days, but many more great days. Then there were days like those spent in and around Big Bend that were challenging, yet very rewarding.

I’ve seen more of Texas in the last two months than I had in the previous twelve years, since moving here in 2008. But of course, there is so much more to see, mainly all that stuff in the middle. I already have a few more adventures bouncing …
