There are already 39 miles of existing trail in the city of Dallas that, if you squint, look like they should connect to one another to create a giant loop. As it stands, they do not. The Katy Trail ends before it reaches the Design District, where a reasonable person could expect this piece of protected pedestrian infrastructure to lead you onto the nearby Trinity Strand Trail. Farther north, the Katy Trail meets up with University Crossing and Ridgewood Trail, which then shoots south on the Sopac Trail near White Rock on its way to the Santa Fe Trail. But if you want to cycle or walk into …

Waking up to 39 degrees was not my idea of a good bike ride day but by the time I started today’s bike ride at 11:29 AM it was 72 degrees and sunny. The start time was delayed as I watched the time trial at the Vuelta a Espana. The course was flat until the final kilometers where it went up a mountain. I think each racer changed from a time trial bike to a road bike at the bottom of the climb. My route today contained nothing like that, thankfully. I biked to the south and east on my “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route and back to Kingwood at 1:59 PM. I rode 32.31 miles boosting my week and November total to 64.59 miles. I am ahead of the pace to reach my road miles goal of 360 for November but behind on Zwift miles.
This route plays tough on average speed because of the numerous starts and stops and lack of long uninterrupted stretches. Until the return leg across Lake Houston my average speed stayed below 14 mph but that 2 miles uninterrupted helped me get it to 14.0 mph. It did settle back to 13.7 mph at the finish as I rode in Kingwood. The Golden Cheetah data summary showed 52% of the ride time I was in power zones 3 through 7.
After yesterday’s bike ride video sound problem I went online to chat with GoPro. After a few questions the rep decided to send me a replacement mic adapter. While I wait on it to arrive I changed my GoPro setup, moving the camera to the front of my helmet without an external mic but with the foam wind muff. The sound in today’s video is pretty good as the Hero 7 Black picks up my voice from below. Also I can hear the camera beeps much better when I press the record button. At 19.9 miles in the ride I changed the mic setting from “Auto” to “wind” to see if that made any difference. It did not so I will leave it on the wind setting. One drawback of the helmet location is the extra weight and possible neck muscle soreness. If I find a good deal on a Hero 8 Black camera I might buy it since it doesn’t require a frame mount like the Hero 7.
With the cool weather my kit choice today: shorts, long sleeve jersey (not a thermal one), and a windbreaker jacket. At times in the shade I felt chilly early in the ride but south of FM 1960 when I was warmed up I didn’t notice the chill in the shade as much. Weather conditions: start 72 (35% humidity, 43.1 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 5 mph; finish 74 (31% humidity, 41.3 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 5 mph. The very low (for Houston) humidity and dew points show how the temperatures can cool so much and feel chilly even in the sun. The forecast calls for a slight warming as the week progresses. More road biking ahead.

On Saturday, I rode the 13-mile stretch from Highway 281 to Palo Alto Road almost entirely on this concrete trail made for pedestrians and bikes, part of San Antonio’s roughly 80-mile trail network. The sun came up earlier today after Daylight Saving Time ended early Sunday morning but the temperature took awhile to get above 60 so I could start today’s bike ride, the first one in November after not biking on Sunday to watch the replay of stage 12 of the Vuelta. The pros climbed an insane mountain to the finish. At times they barely rode at 10 mph using gears way below normal.
A rest day at the Vuelta a Espana meant no conflict for biking today. As I watched the temperature slowly creep towards 70 I decided to get dressed for the ride. At first leg warmers were in the bunch of clothes I pulled from the closet but I made a choice to not wear them settling on shorts, a long sleeve thermal jersey, and a wind breaker jacket. Half finger gloves made the list to access the GoPro record buttons on both cameras.
By 11:24 AM the temperature moved to 69 degrees as I rolled off on my Lynskey R300 bike to start the ride. My legs were chilled until about 15 minutes into the ride when my body reached warmed up. After that they were okay unless I rode through a long stretch of shade. I felt okay with my choice to not wear leg warmers. I chose a northerly route what I call “Kingwood – Fm 1485 – Kingwood”. I rode a little farther north than FM 1485 to the north side of Caney Creek before circling under US59 to begin the ride back to Kingwood. This made the total distance come in at 32.28 miles. My goal for November is 360 road miles and 120 Zwift miles. Adding Zwift to the mix required reworking my spreadsheet.
With some decent biking weather in the forecast for the rest of the week I don’t know when I will start up my Zwift subscription. That’s okay since I like riding outdoors.
Weather while biked today: start 69 (37% humidity, 41.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind variable 7 mph; finish 70 (30% humidity, 37.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 8 mph. I can’t believe how low the humidity and dew point were. That probably added to the chilly feeling while I biked.
The video today had sound issues. The only time my voice recorded was from the clips I shot with the GoPro Hero 7 Silver not using the mic adapter. The Hero 7 Black with the mic adapter produced the other noise. I need to figure out a way to know when the mic adapter is not recording. Twisting the mic plug in the jack usually works but not today or my twisting undid the connection.
Below is the ride data summary from Golden Cheetah which confirms Strava’s statement that today’s bike ride was harder than my usual efforts. Riding the Lynskey with the new 32mm tires rather than the old 30mm ones I replaced produced a smooth ride with the pressure at 80 psi.
