About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Nearly Overdosed On Bike Races, Bike Friendly Weather But It Might Change

Texbiker.net Posted on October 7, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 7, 2020

I almost suffered biking racing overload before starting today’s bike ride. While waiting for the temperature to warm up I watched the women’s and men’s De Brabantse Pijl (1.Pro) from Belgium and stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia. I don’t know how to pronounce the first race’s name. After all of that racing I got ready to ride but not race. I rolled the Canyon Endurace down the driveway and pressed “Start” at 11:14 AM. I chose the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” heading north.

Evidence is starting to show that while I like the temperature to be in the 90’s I ride faster when it is in the low 80’s. Weather during the ride today: start 81 (63% humidity, 67.5 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 6 mph. Finish 85 (55% humidity, 67.5 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 8 mph. With the wind not too strong I made good time to Tavola pushing my average speed to 14 mph. On the way back to Kingwood it increased to 14.5 mph partially with the help of the tailwind. While on the way to Tavola my speed varied from 16 to 18 mph but on the way back I bumped it up to 17 to 19 mph.

It was warm enough for a short sleeve jersey and arm sleeves even in the occasional shade. The sky was solid blue as I rode north and marbled with white clouds looking to the south.

I logged 36.25 miles moving my week’s total to 106.39 miles. If Hurricane Delta doesn’t interrupt biking reaching 200 miles for the week looks possible. Delta may stir things up Friday to early Saturday based on the current forecast but landfall probably will be east of here. Month’s goal standing after today’s ride.

Lone Star Wheelers Takes Senior Citizens on Bike Rides

BY ASHLEY SHADOWENS | localprofile.com

Plano’s Bluebonnet Trail sprang to life this year with a slew of visitors looking for a socially-distant way to get outdoors during the pandemic. The trail has seen a steady stream of guests—families, bike riders, dog walkers and even roller-bladers.

But there’s one group that had been missing since quarantine began: the Lone Star Wheelers.

Lone Star Wheelers is a free community program that offers adapted bicycle rides to those who can’t peddle themselves. The program is set up at …

Texas Tech campus sees spike in bike thefts

www.everythinglubbock.com

LUBBOCK, Texas — At least 10 bikes or bike parts have been stolen from the Texas Tech campus this week alone, according to Texas Tech police reports, and they said that it’s actually not surprising for this time of year.

“Unfortunately, we do have individuals that come onto campus with bolt cutters or with the intent to steal [bicycles]. A lot of times, [thieves] will pawn them at pawn shops, or they’ll take them to have their own means of transportation,” Lt. Amy Ivey, an administrative lieutenant at Texas Tech PD said.

Howard has signed a lease at 720 Elm Ave. and will occupy half a building owned by Anthony Billings and Rodney Clark. They secured an almost $90,000 grant from the city’s in Tax Increment Financing Zone to put toward an estimated $414,000 recovery of the nine-decade-old structure.

Houston drivers could soon face $100 fines for parking in bike lanes

Dylan McGuinness | www.houstonchronicle.com

Drivers who park in Houston’s bike lanes soon could face a $100 fine.

City council on Wednesday is set to consider an ordinance allowing for fines when people park in or otherwise block the lanes, disrupting cyclists’ traffic. Currently, fines are allowed only when there are nearby “no parking” signs.

“There was nothing in the code that said you can’t park in a bike lane,” said Maria Irshad, assistant director of the city’s ParkHouston.

The disruptions long have …

Hotel shooting, car theft, flight on bicycle keep KPD busy

Standing On A Lug Wrench Didn’t Budge It But I Tried

Texbiker.net Posted on October 6, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 6, 2020

Maybe I won’t have to alter my route to Huffman as long as I thought. On today’s bike ride which began at 11:36 AM I rode the “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100″ route modified from the ” Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route to avoid the construction on FM 2100. Today at FM 2100 and Old Atascocita Road a wide swath of asphalt ran south as far as I could. This might mean pavement is not too far away.

Watch the video to find out about the ride title.

With the modified route I biked 32.61 miles boosting my week to 70.15 miles and edging closer to my month’s goal. The cushion now stands at 79 miles.

10-6-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

The warm temperature allowed me to wear a short sleeve jersey with arm sleeves instead of a long sleeve jersey underneath a short sleeve one. I prefer a few more degrees of warmth but in the sun I felt comfortable. Weather at the start and 2:03 PM finish: start 79 (60% humidity, 63.7 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 5 mph. Finish 83 (51% humidity, 62.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 13 mph. More wind than yesterday but not enough deter me from averaging 14.4 mph for a portion of the ride.

The PowerPod bike ride data charts show the effort, wind, and more during the ride. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike. Lately there has been a thread on BikeForums.net about the Lynskey R300. It’s been interesting to read what other owners have to say.

Mountain Biker Hopes to Elevate Sport Across Texas

BY CARLOS GARCIA | spectrumlocalnews.com

AUSTIN, Texas – Bike shops across Central Texas are seeing more customers as people try new hobbies amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mountain biking is more than just a hobby for Seth Buckner, though. He has been riding for over 10 years and building trails for the past four.

“I quit drinking alcohol in 2017 and I think that’s whenever trail-digging really took off because I was using this as an outlet,” he said.

Trail building has been an outlet that’s given Buckner, the man behind …
