About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Smooth Pedaling, Great Average Speed, Summer Lite Weather

Texbiker.net Posted on October 5, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 5, 2020

One of the best bike rides just happened. Nice, but cool weather, strong legs, solid average speed all came together as I rode my Canyon Endurace bike on what I call the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route. I biked 37.54 miles starting off the week in a good position to hit 200 miles for the week if the weather forecast holds. 14 times I biked this route in 2020, 9 on my Canyon Endurace and 5 on my Lynskey R300.

Speaking of the weather, it was cool enough for me to wear a long sleeve jersey (not a thermal one) under a short sleeve one. Whenever I rode in the shade it felt chilly (for me anyway) in the early part of the bike ride. Lots of sun helped warm it up by the time I finished at 2:15 PM. Weather conditions: start 74 (68% humidity, 63 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 7 mph. Finish 82 (60% humidity, 66.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 5 mph. The light breeze contribute to my steady pace no matter which direction I rode.

For the first time in many bike rides my average speed got to 15.1 mph and I held it there from FM 1314 until entering Kingwood near the end of the bike ride. On FM 1314 pedaling into the light wind my speed stayed around 16 to 17 mph. I looked at the power reading a few times and saw 160+ watts. At the end of the ride my average speed came in at 14.7 mph.

I stopped at the Circle K store on FM 1314 and Sorters Road long enough to eat a Clif Bar. My legs were ready when I resumed the ride.

Here is how I stand on my month’s mileage goal. A nice cushion so far but October weather changes.

Bicycling, and of course bike shops, throughout Texas are booming. Bike shop owners have been on BikeTexas' board since the beginning, so we're happy to see so many folks taking to two wheels in the last six months.

Will Cyclists in Suits be back for #txlege in 2021? (Yep, wrong year on the image, sorry!) We hope so! It was wildly successful in 2019, the first year that we had a group ride from BikeTexas headquarters to the Capitol. pic.twitter.com/WQgwfh5YAC

TxDOT has completed a study for a potential Texas Tourism Trails network. This will be built out over a course of years, possibly generations, but the plan exists. pic.twitter.com/dhKstzsN6G

Some Safe Routes to School discussion… for some midsize Texas cities (examples include Abilene and Lubbock, where we've already looked at this), a 2-mile radius from every elementary school covers most of the city with safe routes.

— BikeTexas (@BikeTexas) October 4, 2020

Audience Q: has anywhere in Texas responded to the current bike boom with new infrastructure?
Answer: in places where things are happening quickly right now, it's mainly been because the need/funding was already identified. Process hasn't sped up even with increased bike use.

— BikeTexas (@BikeTexas) October 4, 2020

One thing we like to do, which has been successful, is find good examples within Texas and use those examples for other cities, especially cities that are similar to one another.

Yes! During the intros, attendees shared memories of their first bikes. Some of us started riding early on, others later in life. Great memories! https://t.co/RiJyF2ynk4

Enjoyed a great bike ride today. Be sure to get out & enjoy this fall weather & a social-distanced activity. 200 Mile Week, Great Fall Weather – Biking Kingwood Streets

Texbiker.net Posted on October 4, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 4, 2020

Wrapping up the first week in October I wanted to bike far enough to not lose ground on my monthly goal. The 1:31 PM start on my Lynskey R300 on the “Kingwood Streets” route would accomplish that. Starting after church allowed the temperature to get in the low 80’s.

The video audio is respectable thanks to my sock wrapped around the GoPro camera. I am surprised and should’ve tried it sooner but I didn’t want to cut up a sock.

Biking 20.39 miles to end the week put the total at 225.17 miles. That is the most miles in a week since the week beginning July 29th when I rode 244.66 miles.

10-4-2020 RWGPS Week Bike Ride Summary

To go along with the week’s numbers, I continue to head towards my 615 mile goal for October with 128.01 miles so far. I am ahead of the pace to just reach it.

10-4-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

Earlier this morning the temperature was 55 degrees which looks to be the norm now that fall is here. Thankfully with the sun in full view it warms up enough for me to bike. Weather conditions: start 83 (57% humidity, 66.1 dew point), fair, wind N calm. Finish 83 (54% humidity, 64.2 dew point), a few clouds, wind variable 6 mph.

Getting a Strava personal record surprised me. I didn’t know there any segments on the route today.
