About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

New Route Title, Same Roads. Waited For Some Heat

Texbiker.net Posted on October 3, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 3, 2020

Not the usual early start for the Saturday bike ride because I waited for the temperature to climb from 51 degrees when I woke up. During the wait I watched the prologue of the Giro d’Itlia and stage 5 of the Binck Bank Tour. Plenty of bike racing to inspire me. The temperature warmed up enough to start the bike ride at 10:20 AM. My Canyon Endurace and I rolled off to start on the “Atasccocita – FM 2100 – Walden” route. A new label but a route I biked 5 times including today in 2020. The reason for the new label, the construction crew on FM 2100 north of Old Atascocita Road added more shoulder barriers but not allowing enough space for me to ride on the shoulder. I will use this route until the construction allows a better route. I will miss Huffman. A summary of this year’s rides on today’s route.

YTD bike Rides Summary for Today's Route

With a new label the mileage wasn’t that different coming in at 32.66 miles. Those miles pushed my week to 204.77 miles getting me back at that level after a week below 200 miles. My push toward my month’s goal continues at a good pace getting ahead by 48.1 miles after 3 days.

10-3-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

One of the things I look forward to on Saturday bike rides are the other cyclists I see on this route. With my late start I wondered if I would miss them. Not to worry, I saw about a dozen but only got 3 in the video. The others surprised me when I couldn’t get the GoPro out of my packet quick enough to record them. A side note, the sock wind muff did a good job minimizing the wind noise.

In 2019 on the first Saturday in October I rode the Polk County Spirit Ride in Livingston, TX. Sadly it did not happen this year, probably because of the COVID-19 virus though their website did not say anything.

To go along with the new route label I set a personal record for the Strava segment “Cracks to Tracks”.

10-3-2020 Strava Bike Ride Personal Record

Powerful legs today as I built my average speed to 14.4 mph probably helped by the light wind and wanting to see other cyclists. My average power came in at 134 watts, more than my usual amount. The Strava bike ride summary.

Bike MS: Inside Out social ride

by Sameer Gokhale, Velo Valero | cycling.powweb.com

In any other year, as we move into October, most of us would have been busy with packet pickup, accommodations and getting ready for the Bike MS: Ride to the River. This is not one of those years. This year we prepare for a virtual Bike MS ride on a new date. October 17, 2020 is not far off and I hope you are looking forward to riding on that day.

Bike MS: Inside Out offers us the option to ride outside on the road or trails or inside on our trainers/stationary bikes. This gives us the flexibility to choose the route, length and duration of the ride.

Keeping that in mind, if you are planning to ride on the road, I would like to offer some suggestions on couple of routes and invite you to join other fellow Velo Valero riders on these routes.

Below are two ride options, a short ride and a long ride.

Start date: October 17, 2020

Start location : Gruene Hall …

September 2020 Stats: And I Did Walk (& Bike) 501 Miles

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Last September set records for being hotter than July even here in Central Texas. This year, wonderfully cool weather arrived on the 4th, cancelling out 29 days of 100+ degree F days in August. But I still had to do less biking because of my dumb J-O-B. So it was all I could do to make my 100 bike miles and 10.5 or more walking miles for the week. But together, …

Put A Sock On It. Blue Sky, Long Sleeve Jersey Cool Bike Ride to Roman Forest

Texbiker.net Posted on October 2, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 2, 2020

I began today’s bike ride at 11:07 AM under a blue sky and slightly cooler temperatures. Riding the Canyon Endurace bike I decided to vary the starting streets on my “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route going on streets I have not taken before. I wasn’t sure it would add any distance and it turned out to be about the same as other times, 41.3 miles. I didn’t realize the last time I rode this route was August 31st. With today’s ride it marks the 9th time biking this route in 2020, 5 times on my Canyon Endurace and 4 times on my Lynskey R300. Today’s miles moves my week’s total to 172.11 miles. With the nice weather in the forecast I should ride 200+ miles this week.

During the night or early this morning a mild front moved through the area holding the temperature down a few degrees at the start time compared to yesterday. I waited 30 minutes or so to give time to warm up some. Wisely I chose to wear a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve one to be comfortable in the wind. Riding north a headwind tried to slow me down but I pedaled strongly maybe anticipating a nice tailwind on the way back to Kingwood. Weather at the start and 2:24 PM finish: start 75 (46% humidity, 53 dew point), fair, wind NE 10 mph. Finish 80 (31% humidity, 46.7 dew point), fair, wind NE 8 mph. Hard to believe the humidity and dew points were that low, probably contributing to the cool feeling.

My legs had good power today. I built my average speed up to 14.3 mph and held that until I was back in Kingwood.

I got creative making a wind muff for my GoPro Hero 7 Black camera searching for better audio. I cut a sock and wrapped it around the mics adding two patches of double side tape to hold it in place. I need a solution that isn’t too bulky in order to get it out of a rear jersey pocket. I think the sock did a good job and wasn’t too thick. I will try it again tomorrow. What it looks like.

Texas Biking Action October 1st 2020

Humans of UD: Lindy Litzenburger

By Mia Samaniego | udallasnews.com

As a frequent lobbyist in Washington D.C. with her bicycle-shop owning family since she was 12 years old, junior Lindy Lizenburger was determined to major in politics upon entering the University of Dallas.

Litzenburger began to take interest in politics when she watched the presidential debates between Barack Obama and John McCain during the 2008 presidential election.

“I was old enough to understand what was going on,” Litzenburger said. The debates were interesting even to her 8 year-old-self, and they inspired her to study politics.

Her family lobbies for causes on their trips to D.C. including more accessible routes for bicyclists and funding for bicycle lanes on the side of the road. The Litzenburger family brings these causes forward out of concern for the safety of bicyclists, some of which are …
