Before the start of today’s bike ride I needed 27 miles to reach my 700 mile goal for September. I chose the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route. Starting later at 1:49 PM, after church, I rode my Lynskey R300 bike for a total of 27.41 miles putting me past my goal. In addition my week total came in at 123.58 miles, not bad considering not biking 3 days due to the wet weather from TS Beta.
Where I stand for the month. With 3 potential biking days left I have a shot at making up the 54 miles I was short on my August goal.
Wind from the south was strong today at the start: 8 mph with 18 mph gusts. With the sun out the temperature stayed at 90 degrees from the start until the 3:52 PM finish. That wind was a tailwind until I rode out of Valley Ranch onto the US59 southbound frontage road where the headwind awaited. Biking south to Northpark Drive into the wind was hard but I managed to keep my speed above 15 mph thanks to the trees on my left. Tomorrow a cold front arrives in the morning to noon. I hope the temperature doesn’t drop below 60.
Speed average 14.0mi/h max 21.9mi/h
Heart Rate average 128bpm max 153bpm
Cadence average 76 max 104
Power average 116W max 500W
I think 500 watts was from riding into the wind.
Tonight I move the Favero pedals back to my Canyon Endurace bike for tomorrow’s ride.
The Downtown Arts District bike rack installed at the beginning of the year at the corner of West Texas Avenue and North Ashbel Street has been removed by city workers so that it can be repaired, and also serve as a model for a second bike rack for the same area.
Some downtown business owners were concerned this week when the custom-made bike rack, which spells the word “Arts,†was nowhere to be found and chipped concrete was where it once stood. …

Last night my @TrekBikes Verve +2 left me stranded about 6 miles from home. Fortunately had a lifeline to get back home, but now bike is out of commission for few days / weeks while I work through warranty claim. There’s a known problem with chain ring. Cc: @BoscheBikeUSpic.twitter.com/HJDGuP4EKe

While waiting for the temperature to get above 70 degrees this morning I watched the UCI Women’s World Championship road race until 38 kilometers left (I watched the rest after today’s bike ride). This put the start of today’s bike ride about an hour later than usual with my Lynskey R300 wheels rolling at 9:37 AM. With the later start I wasn’t sure if I would see any other cyclists as I rode the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route but no fear, I saw quite a few though not all captured on a GoPro.
I biked 33.45 miles putting my week’s total at 96.16 miles. Not too bad considering the weather kept me off the bike Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. My quest to reach my September 700 mile goal got closer with my ride today. Only 23 miles left to hit my goal. I will ride tomorrow (Sunday) planning to get those miles. Monday a front probably will arrive dropping the night time temperature into the 50’s but daytime should be in the 80’s so I can ride.
After failing to connect the PowerPod and Lezyne Macro Plus bike computer yesterday, last night I switched the Favero Assiomo pedals from my Canyon Endurace to my Lynskey R300 to get power readings on today’s bike ride. I paired the Favero sensor to the Macro Plus preparing for the ride. This morning the Favero pedals paired quickly to the Macro Plus as did all the other sensors. I went to the Favero website and put my name on the 45 day waiting list to order another pair of pedals. Sadly I am giving up on the PowerPod. While the PowerPod gives good data it is too difficult to program with only a mulitcolored blinking LED signaling configuration steps. If only a phone app enabled the configuration and setup. The desktop program only runs on Apple and Windows but my main computer is a Chromebook. I stopped at Towne Center in Kingwood and took these photos. Also with the PowerPod not used this opened the GoPro mount under the computer for my GoPro camera previously mounted on the handlebar stem.
Fall weather was what it felt like during the ride even when the temperature made it into the 80’s. I am glade I waited which allowed me to wear my usual kit rather than adding a long sleeve jersey. Weather at the start and 2:17 PM finish: start 79 (80% humidity, 72.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind N calm. Finish 85 (65% humidity, 71.5 dew point), partly cloudy, wind variable 4 mph. The light wind helped me get my average speed up to 14.3 mph and seeing powermeter readings on the bike computer inspired me to pedal harder when needed to maintain that average speed. Some data points:
Austin Transportation is installing the first of many temporary safety and mobility additions to Congress Avenue this week as the interim step toward the city’s complete redesign project launched in 2017.

Crazy morning today. I was out at Walnut doing a lap and came across a rider by the tool stand in the middle of the park who was waving wildly to me. Figured he had a flat but as I turned to head over there I saw another rider down.
The first guy was on the phone with 911, the other guy was not moving at all and appeared to not be breathing. He clearly collapsed, this was not a crash. As soon as we heard sirens he stayed there and I shot off to direct them from the street. About a dozen people, showed up, fire, EMS, etc. Lifeflight was circling.
We heard someone say "faint pulse" which was a hopeful sign. With so many people standing over him I took off, I didn’t want to be in the way and quite frankly couldn’t be of any assistance.
I hope this guy pulls through, if anyone hears anything, please post up. …
Yes, you read that right. I was biking, and a some misguided soul, correctoin, major assclown in a car slowed down to throw a firecracker at my head. But that wasn’t all. The firecracker throwing happened after a guy in a truck ran a red light and turned without yielding in front me, which could have resulted in major pain or death were I not such a defensive rider and excellent bike handler. But …
One person was killed Thursday morning in a pickup vs. bicycle collision in Hunt County.
