About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Overcast Sky Hinting of Fall and Normal Power Recording

Texbiker.net Posted on September 17, 2020 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 17, 2020

Out the door with my Canyon Endurace wheels rolling at 11:20 AM on the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route planning on biking around 37 miles but ending up at 38.83 miles when I finished at 2:28 PM. This puts my week total at 151.4 miles. I needed a few extra miles because Saturday I will not be able to ride as far as I usually do. I plan on another 37 mile ride tomorrow to put me close to 200 miles for the week leaving a few miles for Saturday. Today was the 10th time biking this route in 2020.

Thanks to overcast skies and wind from the north to northeast the temperature never left the 80’s during the bike ride. Maybe fall weather will arrive when it arrives in a few days. On the way to Ramsey Road I battled a headwind but after a short break at the bridge on Ramsey Road the return ride tailwind helped me get back to Kingwood. Weather conditions: 87 (70% humidity, 75.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind N 9 mph. Finish 88 (66% humidity, 75 dew point), overcast, wind NE 15 mph. A cool front may arrive Friday night to Saturday morning making arm sleeves for warmth more than sun protection.

Making progress on reaching my 700 mile goal for September.

9-17-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

I need 173 miles to get to my goal. If I average 30 miles per day and ride 10 days the rest of the month I could end up at 827 miles.

Recorded watts appears to be back to normal after changing the setting for the Favero pedals. Below the table shows the average power and max power for rides in September. Notice the shorter bars before I made the change.

Texas Cyclists Are Discovering the Joys of Gravel Grinding

BY PAM LEBLANC | www.texasmonthly.com

Why many are exchanging paved roads and traffic for rural routes and breathtaking scenery.

A million years ago, otherwise known as early March—when the prospect of hopping on a bicycle didn’t require a plan for disinfectant and social distancing—I drove to Palmetto State Park, near Gonzales, with my husband and a friend. We paid our entrance fee, parked the car, and climbed onto our bikes, pedaling south of the park on FM 2091 for a mile before turning onto a network of gravel roads. We rolled past chicken farms, fields of wildflowers, and barking dogs. We chugged north over a rusty …

Tour de Texas, Week 2: Riding Behind the Pine Curtain

BY AARON CHAMBERLAIN | www.texasmonthly.com

I cycled nearly 400 miles across East Texas this week, enjoying the kindness of strangers along the way.

If I quit now, I’d have made it a quarter of my trip around the state of Texas, 782 miles. That’s pretty good, but there is no way I can quit now. I have so much more to see. While spending this past week in East Texas, I must’ve passed about five million pine trees—and I appreciated every single one. The only thing I found nicer than the trees in East Texas were the people I met along the way, especially those who reached out to …

Five Great Gravel Grinding Routes in Texas

BY PAM LEBLANC | www.texasmonthly.com

All across Texas, more cyclists are turning to the more laid-back category of “gravel grinding,” which gets them off of paved streets—and away from a lot of fast-moving cars—and onto more serene rural routes. Texas has become a popular state for gravel grinding over the past few years. The Hill Country and the Red River Valley are especially scenic and offer many gravel routes, but gravel riding can be done almost …

Vintage rides in Texas

Brad L | www.bikeforums.net

I’ve created a Facebook Group called Texas VeloVintage so those here in Texas who wish to ride their vintage bikes can get together and do so.

This is a fairly new group so it’s still growing. The group covers the entire state, but I visualize moderators in the larger metro areas organizing vintage rides in their areas.

I’ve scheduled an inaugural casual vintage ride out of Waller, TX for October 3rd at 8am. Details are on the Texas VeloVintage group page.

I’m currently working with several people to get a larger, fully supported vintage ride going in the …

Bike Trails In Houston: Three Questionable Areas

By Phoebe Zipper | bikehouston.org

In Houston, the perpetually forward bound city, the instinct has often been build first, consider human consequences later. While the trails along Houston’s bayous offer one place for cyclists to ride without worrying about cars, unfortunately these trails are rarely seamless: punctuated by detours and construction, cyclists end up driven off the bayou and into city traffic. As the pandemic has led to more cyclists than ever along Houston’s bayou trails, here are three spots to be aware of where improvements in infrastructure can help improve bike paths:

White Oak Bayou

Missing Watts Found, No 20% Climbs Here, 6 Foot Roosters

Texbiker.net Posted on September 16, 2020 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 16, 2020
See the 6 foot roosters

After watching stage 17 of the Tour de France where the closing kilometers went up a mountain with over 20% gradients I chose a much flatter route to the north. Aboard my Canyon Endurace bike at 11:08 AM I headed out on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route biking 35.44 miles when I finished at 1:52 PM. Those miles moved my week total to 112.56 miles.

Although it was 90 degrees at the start it didn’t feel that hot thanks to reasonable humidity (for Houston anyway) and dew point. Wind was calm picking up to 10 mph from the north by the time I finished. The calm wind held mostly while I rode north to Tavola and then I enjoyed a helpful tailwind on the trip back to Kingwood. I still managed to sport some salt stains on my bike shorts and arm sleeves. According to Space City Weather the temperatures might cool a few degrees if a front makes it here the next couple of days.

Yesterday I mentioned the power output reading seemed to be less than what I expected. I checked the Favero Assiomo app and found a setting to send 2X values to bike computers that don’t make the change internally. As a result today’s power readings look closer to what I expected. For example:

  • August 5th on this route average power 119 watts, max power 443 watts
  • Today’s ride average power 106 watts, max power 464 watts

The August 5th ride used my Wahoo Bolt computer and today was the Lezyne Macro Plus with the 2X setting for power.

My mileage goal for September standings.

9-16-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

A cushion of almost 115 miles puts me in a good position to reach my goal and then some. As of today I need to bike about 212 more miles.

DeSoto BMX’s 20-year run is tale of opportunity and love for community

By Tyler Carter | www.dallasnews.com

DeSoto BMX is more than just a park where kids go to learn about the ins and outs of the bicycle motocross — it also serves as refuge and a place where life lessons are taught.

Owner Christopher Allen inherited the park, which has been a staple in the community for 20 years, five years ago.

“When we invite people in, we want them to feel and see the history — the 20-year-old paint on the wall,” Allen said. “We just don’t want to take away from …

Denton e-bike company Bunch Bikes sees rise in demand amid pandemic

By Kevin Cummings | www.bizjournals.com

Between lockdown orders and work-from-home measures, COVID-19 has created a surge in demand for bicycles.

And as people and cities look for ways to utilize the open roads left behind by declining vehicle traffic, Denton-based electric cargo bike maker Bunch Bikes sees that trend continuing and sees its product poised to help bring Scandinavian-style bike culture to the U.S.

“The first time [I saw]… one of these bikes and I saw kids in it, I did this like double take like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve never seen such a thing,” Aaron Powell, Bunch Bikes founder, told NTX Inno. “What I like… is it connects the kids more with the …

River crossings, longhorns and hills: Fifty miles of gravel biking around Mason

by Pam LeBlanc | pamleblancadventures.com

My mustard-colored Specialized Diverge got a taste of real gravel this weekend, when I crunched over 50 miles of undulating two-lane roads around Mason.
Highlights? White-tailed deer that bounded over ranch fences and streaked in front of our small group. Real Texas terrain, complete with burnt orange and white longhorns, prickly pear cactus and vultures perched atop telephone poles, their wings spread like capes to dissipate heat. And lots of wide open spaces.
Our group of four – me and my husband, plus Mike Drost and Deb Richardson, who (along with Janie Glos) put on the Castell Grind each spring – met at the Dos Rios RV park south of Mason Saturday morning. I’ve been riding my …

Early Bird v. Night Owl: Which is Better for a Bicyclist?

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

There’s a poem I can’t find with a line I like that goes something like this: “The day makes promises but the night keeps secrets.” Hell, maybe I wrote that. For the last almost three years since I was liberated from a job through no fault of my own — “restructuring,” they called it — my open secret is that I’ve gravitated towards staying up late. Truth is, I’ve always been drawn toward the still, small hours. Ever since I was made to go to bed at 8 or 9 as a kid whilst the adults stayed up to play music or cards or just talk, I’ve felt like …
