About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

HH100 Virtual Ride: How will it impact our local economy?

by: Curtis Jackson | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL)—The Hotter’N Hell Hundred has been going strong for nearly 40-years, but due to the pandemic, organizers are having to alter the way they hold the event by going virtual.

After nearly forty years of thousands upon thousands of riders visiting Wichita Falls to ride in one of the largest sanctioned bike rides in the nation, they will now have to miss out on an experience some say they will never forget, and the Wichita Falls community will also be …

Texas Bicycle Laws: What You Need To Know

dlgarzalaw.com

Riding a bicycle on Texas roads can be dangerous, especially if you are cycling near cars, trucks, and other large motor vehicles. To protect cyclists from injury, the Texas Transportation Code outlines specific rules and regulations each person who rides a bicycle must follow when riding. Understanding these laws can help prevent harm during your bicycle rides, or protect your best interests if you are in an accident with a motorist who violates them. Texas Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to the Texas Department of Transportation’s (DOT) safety initiative Share the Road, bicycle collisions are common throughout the state. Between 2010 and 2016, there were 16,807 bicycle crashes throughout Texas, and …

100-mile finisher boosts V&CF, lowers weight

By Henry Howard | www.legion.org

When the pandemic hit five months ago, Robert Michaelson’s gym shut down. So the retired Air Force veteran put on his sneakers and started walking six to eight miles daily.

“It’s just part of my lifestyle now,” he said. “My wife says I’ve lost weight; maybe the weight is redistributed. I guess I have lost weight since my pants don’t fit the same way.”

Michaelson quickly signed up for American Legion National Commander Bill Oxford’s 100 Miles For Hope campaign when it was unveiled Aug. 3. Michaelson, adjutant of Capt. Mark “Tyler” Voss American Legion Post 313 in Boerne, Texas, walked the majority of his miles. But he finished with a 27-mile bike ride at the Crownridge Canyon Natural Area in San Antonio. …

Look At Those Turtles Passing Me! – Bike Ride to Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on August 26, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 26, 2020

Continuing my return to bike riding I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I didn’t realize how slow this ride would be. My Lynskey R300 and I rolled off on the ride at 10:39 AM intending to complete this route unlike Monday when I altered the route to a shorter one. This route isn’t identical because of the construction north of Old Atascocita Road on FM 2100. I don’t actually ride through Huffman. The mileage today came in at 31.33 boosting the week to 90.22 miles.

Look at the sky during the video. Clouds from the east pushed by the wind that slowed me down.

Weather is the big story today in SE Texas with Hurricane Laura headed to SW Louisiana but impacting the Houston area some. Today the wind during my bike ride took a toll on my tired legs. Whenever I headed east my speed slowed to 10 mph with maybe a burst to 12 mph. That was all I could get from the engine room today. Weather at the start and finish: start 88 (79% humidity, 80.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 13 mph, finish 94 (65% humidity, 80.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 12 mph. The return to Kingwood with a tailwind went better but I couldn’t make up for the slowness.

I reached 600+ miles for August but 800 miles is not going to happen. How I stand on my August goal. As long as I ride 26 miles or more I gain ground. Thursday (tomorrow) the weather from Laura may keep me home. If my leg power today was any indicator a rest day might help.

8-26-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

My Lynskey R300 now has 2043 miles on it. I almost rode the Canyon Endurace today but changed my mind before the bike ride. I noticed it needs washed with dirt on the seat tube.

Even with the slow ride Strava told me today’s bike ride was consistent with my usual effort. Not sure how it arrived at that.

Was just told that I wasn't allowed on HCC property (by an HCC cop) while trying to ride on the Austin St bikeway that cuts through their campus.

Anyone know the actual agreement that @HoustonPlanning / @HouPublicWorks / @HoustonBikePlan made with HCC?

CC: @peccles_online

— Wilson (@WilsonCalvert) August 26, 2020

I did press him that this was a designated City of Houston bikeway and had he seen the bikeway markings set into the actual ground, and he said he didn't care and that it was still HCC property and to go around the campus.

Not a huge deal, so I did, but still annoying.

Right Bicep Soreness, Unwanted House Guest Laura

Texbiker.net Posted on August 25, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 25, 2020

After my stay in the hospital I thought my legs would be sore when I started biking again. But my right bicep is sore. I didn’t realize how much I use my arms when biking especially into the wind. Maybe it is sore because that was the arm with the IV.

I set out on my Canyon Endurace bike at 10:36 AM riding the “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route. The wind fought me all the way to Caney Creek when I made the big u-turn under US59 to head back to Kingwood. I biked 31.2 miles clawing back a little of the miles I need to reach my goal. Today marked the 10th time on this route in 2020; 7 times on my Canyon Endurace and 3 times on the Lynskey R300. I saw another cyclist early in the ride but he surprised before I could start the GoPro camera.

No bills in the grass today but plenty of weather news. Hurricane Laura appears to be heading to SE Texas and SW Louisiana but not for sure exactly where or how strong for now. Weather for today’s ride had hints of the change with the north 7 mph wind and high clouds. Weather for the ride: start 87 (61% humidity, 71.8 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NE 7 mph. Finish 94 (46% humidity, 70.3 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 12 mph. While it didn’t feel that hot (to me anyway) when I finished at 1:17 PM salt stains adorned my kit as you can see in the video.

My August mileage goal looks out of reach between my hospital stay and the upcoming weather but I made some progress with today’s bike ride.
