About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Racing with Andy Hollinger

by Paul, Drop Bar, Texas: A cycling podcast | anchor.fm

Andy Hollinger came back to talk some more about Texas racing, how technology has reduced the wait for results, sprinting off the back, and the people memorialized through the names of his races. We also discuss the Fort Hood Challenge XII which has since been cancelled due to pandemic related changes in activity guidelines on military bases. I took out the registration information for the race, but the route is linked below. Finally, recent feats of glory by Texan cyclists are noted.

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Back in June, I wrote a cute little post about it hitting 100 degrees once. Now, after about 30 days of 100+ days, June seems like sweater weather. For regular, or in my case currently daily bicycle riders, or anyone who walks, runs, or exercises outside, this is a problem. I’ve already written a post about how to deal with it, so I won’t repeat that here, though this is the link. This post is mostly to complain about it. Because who doesn’t enjoy a …

LEAGUE CITY, Texas (KTRK) — A League City father is counting his blessings after a hit-and-run accident left him badly injured, but thankful to be alive.

Michael Pomes was riding his bicycle to work Wednesday when a driver in an SUV hit him and took off around 11 a.m.

Michael was crossing the intersection of Hobbs Road and FM-518 when the vehicle went to turn right on to FM-518 and struck him.

Not The Only Biker Out In The Heat Advisory

Texbiker.net Posted on August 15, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 15, 2020

Wheels down and rolling at 8:26 AM as I rode south and east hoping to see some other cyclists. I rode the usual Saturday route “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” on my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike. I only needed 10 miles to make it a 200+ mile week and I exceeded that by riding 30.76 miles. This was a little shorter for this route because I left out biking north on FM 2100 due to the road construction. Today marked the 14th time biking this route in 2020, 13 times on my Canyon bike and once on my Lynskey R300 bike. The total miles for the week came in at 220.82, just .02 more than last week. I now have a two week streak over 200 miles. Below is a summary of the week’s rides.

8-15-2020 Week Bike Rides Summary ending 8-16-2020

As I rode towards Huffman I saw a number of fellow cyclists mostly going the other direction and before I got to FM 1960. Normally I see more cyclists once I start across Lake Houston and east but today I saw more on the west side of the lake. At the church on Fairlake Lane only two cars in the parking lot meant not many bikers ahead since they like to park there. I suspect the hot weather may keep some of them home or they finished before I got there. I like the hot weather but starting early (for me at least) today the temperature was about 10 degrees lower than when I started yesterday.

Today and tomorrow the heat index will probably be close to 110 but on Monday a “cool” front could lower it and the temperature a few degrees. I filled the CamelBak with and ice and water for today and some ice remained when I finished at 10:46 AM. Weather conditions: start 81 (94% humidity, 79.6 dew point), a few clouds, wind variable 4 mph. Finish 93 (66% humidity, 79.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph. It felt cool at the start but I didn’t realize the humidity was so high. Lots of sun but as I rode east over Lake Houston some clouds dotted the sky ahead.

Biking to the turn around point on Old Atascocita Road I set a good pace lifting my average speed to 14.1 mph. On the return a headwind slowed me some and shrunk my legs power. My average speed dropped to 14.0 mph by the time I reached the west side of the lake. Winding through the side streets into Walden further lowered my legs output. Once the route turned north my pedaling effort got a little help from the tailwind.

I now am up to 472.29 miles for the month. With 16 potential days left to reach my goal it looks like I should make it. Below is a recap of my goal progress showing I am 85 miles ahead.

8-15-2020 MTD Bike Ride Mileage Goal Status

I will take Sunday off which will reduce my miles ahead some. Tomorrow is my late wife’s birthday. She would be 74.

Link to my Strava activity page. Strava tells me today’s ride was consistent with my usual efforts.

Wichita Falls Rolling Through Lucy Park Tall Prairie Grass

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

I rolled my motorized means of locomotion to Lucy Park this morning to have myself a mighty fine time rolling my non-mechanized wheels for a long commune with somewhat shady nature.

I don’t know if that tall green grass you see on either side of my bike’s handlebars is prairie tall grass of the sort which covered the Plains part of the United States back when the buffalo roamed and the deer and the antelope played.

What I do know is the grass was taller than me. And my latest …
