About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Beat The Heat Advisory Bike Ride to Tavola

Texbiker.net Posted on August 12, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 12, 2020

Today’s bike ride followed a route I ride often, the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” one. I needed a route that wasn’t too long to fit the time window available and this one fit. I biked 35.87 miles which boosted my week total to 120.63 miles, a good number to position me for a 200+ mile week. This was the 18th time biking this route in 2020. 14 times on my Canyon Endurace and 4 times on my Lynskey R300.

In today’s video towards the end another cyclist catches me in Oakhurst and passes. Look closely at his bike.

I noticed when I checked the NOAA weather app on my phone the bike ride that a heat advisory is in effect from 11 AM to 7 PM. The temperature may approach 100 and the heat index could hit 109. I stated the ride at 9:58 AM and finished at 12:49 PM so I missed the major period of heat but it was still hot. The wind was light though the headwind biking south back to Kingwood felt stronger than the 7 mph I saw on the app at the finish of the ride. Weather at the start and finish: start 87 (74% humidity, 78.1 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 6 mph. Finish 95 (57% humidity, 77.3 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph. Though it was hot no salt stains on my shorts at the finish today but they were soaked.

Update on my monthly goal progress:

  • 372.08 miles after today’s bike ride
  • 31.01 miles per day now vs. 25.8 miles per day to reach 800 miles
  • 62.48 miles ahead of the 25.8 miles x 12 day pace
  • if I maintain 31.01 miles per day I could bike 961.31 miles in August, an increase over yesterday’s pace

I don’t ride like a racer but what I consider a fast recreational rider. A podcast I watch on YouTube rides at what he calls a “party pace”, mostly on gravel roads in Montana.

ASK A COP — No limit on number of lights on bicycle

www.panews.com

… Back Quiet from Port Arthur asks: I am a bicyclist and ride my bike often on the roadways of Port Arthur. I have all the safety equipment required for riding a bicycle on the roadways of Port Arthur, but I’ve gone a step further with the lighting on my bicycle. Not only do I have a white light on the front of my bicycle but I also have decorated my bicycle with Christmas lights. Now I was wondering is there such a law regarding having too many lights on a bicycle in Texas?

Answer: There’s no limitation for lighting on a bicycle in the state of Texas. Be reminded that a bicycle is considered a VEHICLE in the state of Texas, but it not a motor vehicle. So bicycle riders are required to ALL laws and duties regarding safe operation on vehicles on the roadways of Texas. You can …

When I began this particular experiment in #DontBreaktheChain, I didn’t even know it. It just sort of happened and at some point I consciously decided to go for it. So now, ten months later, I’m glad I did, But oy vey! Am I tired. Because it also includes walking, yoga, writing/editing the book or this blog, plus the rest of my life. There’s something very gratifying about it, while also I’m very aware that’s its all a bit too much. It could end at any moment, but for …

Dusted Off A Route Biking to FM 686

Texbiker.net Posted on August 11, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 11, 2020

In my quest for some route variety I dusted off a route that I have not rode since June 13th, 2017. While most of the roads are familiar ones today I biked about 4 miles into Liberty County on what I call the “FM1960 to FM686 – Back” route covering 42.4 miles, my second day in a row of 42 miles. Back in 2017 I biked this route 3 times but since then I held off for 2 reasons which you can hear and see in the video. Today’s mileage is the average distance for this route.

Not much change in the weather from yesterday’s bike ride. I started the ride today at 10:00 AM and finished at 1:21 PM. Lots of sun warmed me up as I biked. Arm sleeves and sunscreen tried to keep it at bay but long stretches on FM 1960 did not include any shade for cooling. Wind helped me some on the way to FM 686 and fought me on the way back to Atascocita Shores Drive, a long almost 10 miles long. Weather: start 92 (73% humidity, 82.2 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph. Finish 96 (58% humidity, 78,9 dew point), partly cloudy, wind calm. Salt stains on my shorts as the ride progressed verified the heat. Humidity was about normal for southeast Texas this time of the year. With a little over a month of summer left the forecast for the next week to 10 days repeats today most days.

Did I make any progress on my monthly goal? Including today’s bike ride I biked 336.21 miles in August or 30.56 miles per day versus the 25.8 miles per day to hit the 800 mile goal. I am 4.76 miles ahead per day and 52.41 miles ahead of 25.8 miles per day pace for 800 miles. Based on the 30.56 miles per day my total for August would be 947 miles, below where I was on Saturday. The Sunday rest day set me back some but still exceeding my goal. Year to date mileage: 5,601 road miles and 542 Zwift miles for a total of 6,143 miles.

Bike ride data highlights today:

  • average heart rate 134 bpm
  • max heart rate 161 bpm
  • average power 102 watts
  • max power 449 watts
  • elapsed time 3:20:55

Bicycle shortage expected to last months, says Richardson Bike Mart owner

By William C. Wadsack | communityimpact.com

In more than 30 years in business, Richardson Bike Mart owner and President Woody Smith said he has never seen a bicycle shortage like the one that has occurred since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s crazy busy,” Smith said of the demand from people wanting to do more cycling. “We’ve got 11,000 bicycles on back-order, which is probably twice as much as we normally have.”

With locations in Frisco, McKinney, Richardson and Dallas, the …

Houstonians Asked To Comment On Proposed Bike Lane Parking Ban

GAIL DELAUGHTER | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

Cycling advocates says illegally parked vehicles pose hazards for people on bikes. The proposed ordinance would allow for fines for violators.

Motor homes, parade floats, giant limos — even a truck towing a portable toilet.

Houston cyclists say they’ve seen just about every kind of vehicle imaginable parked in the city’s designated bike lanes.

Construction crews and work trucks have also been spotted, along with loads of materials like bricks.

Houston City Council is now hoping to address the problem with a proposed ordinance that would subject violators to a fine for blocking a bike lane. It would also …
