About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

All Dressed, Rained Out Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 26, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 26, 2020

As I got dressed to go biking I heard thunder several times and the sky seemed to get a little darker. I filled the CamelBak with ice and water, put my shoes, helmet and gloves on before walking to the back door wheeling the Canyon Endurace beside me. Opening the back door I heard rain hitting the patio cover gently which encouraged me that maybe it was just a passing shower. I leaned the Canyon against some flower urns and walked around. The rain slowed and then stopped for a minute before resuming stronger than before. It appeared today’s bike ride wasn’t going to happen.

This was the second rained out bike ride this week. I hoped to ride enough miles today to make it a 200+ mile week but that did not happen. I ended the week at 170.75 miles and the month at 766.39 miles so far.

7-26-2020 Week Bike Rides Summary Ending 7-26-2020

Where I stand on reaching my goals.

7-26-2020 YTD Bike Ride Goals Status

Next week if the rain will cooperate I will reach my 800 mile goal for July and ride 200+ miles for the week.

Copperas Cove: Cove ISD urges students to walk, bike to school instead of riding the bus

By Rosemond Crown | www.kwtx.com

COPPERAS COVE, Texas (KWTX) – The Copperas Cove ISD is asking parents to consider allowing their children to walk, bike or carpool to school when classes resume.

The district says as it prepares to return to in-person classes on August 18, it is putting safety measures in place for school busses.

The Texas Education Agency does not require social distancing on school buses, but the agency recommends districts consider requiring students and staff to use hand sanitizer upon boarding busses; open bus windows when possible to allow outside air to circulate; encourage families to drop students off, carpool, or walk with their student to school to reduce possible virus exposure on buses, and thoroughly clean buses after each trip, focusing …

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Start Cycling Over 50

By Margie Zable Fisher | www.livestrong.com

If it’s been a few years — OK, maybe decades — since you hopped on a bike, there’s no better time to take up this low-impact exercise. Even if you’ve been pedaling on a stationary bike for exercise, it doesn’t compare to the actual experience of hitting the road.

"Biking among people 50 and over has grown in recent years, especially due to the introduction of e-bikes and better infrastructure," Tim Blumenthal, president of the national nonprofit bicycle advocacy group People for Bikes, tells LIVESTRONG.com.

And you’re certainly not alone if you let the habit fall by the wayside: According to …

Walnut Creek Update

By TheX | austinmountainbiking.com

Very packed, and a lot of dogs/kids/hikers/moms/people. Seems like a lot of people that aren’t familiar with how to co-exist with bike riders, but still a great ride this morning.

If you are a person that doesn’t like to be around unmasked people, I would suggest going elsewhere. I was out there for 2.5+ hours, and saw two people with masks, one walking and the other riding. People are pretty much over it. Just an FYI. …

Why Hanna, Why? A Stormy Relationship

Texbiker.net Posted on July 25, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 25, 2020

When I got up this morning I checked the weather for bike ride conditions. It didn’t look great but rain had not moved into my area yet. When I went to sleep last night Tropical Storm Hanna was in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Texas but by morning Hurricane Hanna loomed. The projected landfall is around Port Mansfield well down the Texas coast between Corpus Christi and Brownsville. Checking the radar as I ate breakfast I decided to wait before riding. The weather looked stable with no rain nearby and I made the decision to ride.

Starting at 9:24 AM on my Canyon Endurace I planned to ride the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route like I do most Saturday’s but I knew rain might alter my plans. I wanted to ride at least 10 miles which makes it an official bike ride for me. The sky alternated between cloudy and threatening as you can see in the video. I ended up turning back when I almost made it to FM 1960 as rain began to come down, not a lot but enough to get me wet. I didn’t want to get in the middle of the Lake Houston causeway to get caught in the rain with no place to go. That has happened to me in the past. The became “Kingwood to FM 1960” and back for a total of 20.65 miles which is better than no miles. The week now totals 170.75 miles making it possible for a 200+ mile week if Sunday’s weather permits. July stands at 766.39 miles only 34 miles away from my 800 mile goal.

I already wrote some about the weather. The start and finish weather conditions: start 83 (87% humidity, 78.6 dew point), mostly cloudy and breezy, wind NE 22 mph gusts 29 mph. Finish 79 (94% humidity, 77.4 dew point), light rain/mist, wind E 13 mph. When I finished at 11:01 AM light rain starting coming down as I rinsed off the Canyon Endurace for the second time this week. The weather radar after the ride.

Up to turning around my legs were doing much better than yesterday. Power came when I needed and I was improving my average speed. My Strava bike ride summary.

REI’S Co-Op Cycles Uses Membership Insight In Mountain Biking Design, Business Model

Tim Newcomb | www.forbes.com

Crafting the people’s bike while creating confident riders. That’s how REI views its role in mountain biking, using its unique business model of a membership-led co-op to design product that can serve as an alternative to mainstream bike brands by making decisions based on getting people outside, especially if that means on the house brand, Co-op Cycles.

Being a membership-owned operation means Co-op Cycles looks at profit margins differently (more than 70 percent of all REI profits get pumped back into the community), uses …
