About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Biking South Gets Wet Again

Texbiker.net Posted on July 28, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 28, 2020

Another bike ride attempt heading south thwarted by rain. That makes three attempts to go south and rain got my number starting last Saturday. I planned on riding the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route but only rode as far as the W. Lake Houston Parkway bridge over Bens Branch Bayou where I stayed for about 30 minutes until the rain slowed down. I did bike 11.25 miles to make an official ride by my definition of 10 miles or more. Maybe watching the Vuelta a Burgos on flobikes.com before starting the bike ride didn’t allow me to get ahead of the rain.

As I rode to the south dark clouds hung on the horizon waiting for me to get in position with no where to hide or get out of the rain. I decided to loop under W. Lake Houston Parkway at Ben’s Branch Bayou and stopped as the rain started. Maybe Wednesday I can complete a bike ride going south? At least I reached my July mileage goal yesterday.

Weather conditions at the 10:51 AM start and the 12:28 PM finish: start 82 (94% humidity, 80.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind N 6 mph. Finish 77 (99% humidity, 76.7 dew point), thunderstorms rain fog, wind S 5 mph.

County commissioner Ellis provides more support for bike-sharing program

by Adam Zuvanich | theleadernews.com

The Harris County Commissioners Court recently approved a proposal by Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis, an avid cyclist who serves part of the area, to invest an additional $1 million in Houston’s bike-sharing program.

According to a news release from Houston BCycle, a nonprofit created by the city in 2012, the money will go toward the expansion of the program. It now has 111 stations with about 800 bikes, including nine stations in the Heights and Washington Avenue areas.

“In addition to being environmentally friendly, cycling is currently one of the safest forms of transportation — we …

"In addition to being environmentally friendly, cycling is currently one of the safest forms of transportation — we need to ensure that it is an option for all residents."

by Eric Anthony | www.houstononthecheap.com

While we’re all staying at home right now, it’s more important than ever to stay active and healthy. This is especially true for kids who need to be active on a daily basis for their health and well-being. One of the best ways to be active while having some fun right now is to ride a bike, and the Children’s Museum of Houston wants to make it a little safer for your kids to do so this summer.

This Thursday, July 30, the Children’s Museum of Houston will be handing out free kids bike helmets as …

Rolling My Bike To See The Great Wheel Of Wichita Falls

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

It had been a day or two or three since my bike has rolled me anywhere, til today.

A cold front has lowered the temperature into the low 90s during the time of day I usually do my wheel rolling. The humidity makes the temperature feel hotter, as in over 100, but that is still …

Two Missions Accomplished: Completed Bike Ride, Mileage Goal Exceeded

Texbiker.net Posted on July 27, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 27, 2020

After two attempts to ride to the south the previous two days today I changed to the north starting at 10:23 AM on the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route. My Canyon Endurace carried me 37.26 miles allowing me to reach my 800 mile goal for July with a total of 803.65 miles. Also the Canyon rolled to 18,006 miles since I bought it. This marks the 8th time I biked this route in 2020, 7 times on my Canyon Endurace and 1 time on my Lynskey R300. The rest of the month I will see how much I can exceed my goal. A summary of the bike rides on this route is below.

The weather changed to a cooler level following Hurricane Hannah moving ashore in South Texas on Saturday. Conditions at the 10:23 AM start and 1:12 PM finish: start 78 (99% humidity, 77.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 6 mph. Finish 87 (79% humidity, 79.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 5 mph. Lately I began wearing arm sleeves for sun protection but today I think they also provided some warmth for the “chilly” temperature at the start of the ride.

With two days of rest my legs were up to the light headwind getting to SH 242 and taking advantage of the tailwind back to the south. The headwind didn’t keep me from improving my average speed so I was rolling at a good pace to build on. I built my overall average speed up to 14.4 mph going back to Kingwood.

Some data points:

  • average heart rate 126 bpm
  • maximum heart rate 156 bpm
  • average power 96 watts
  • maximum power 475 watts
  • average cadence 70 rpm
  • maximum cadence 97 rpm
