About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

111% of Goal, Biking to The South Doesn’t Cause Rain

Texbiker.net Posted on July 30, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 30, 2020

I put 111% into reaching my mileage goal for July. My goal is 800 miles and with today’s bike ride I am at 884.71 miles. With one day remaining and cooperation from the weather I should reach 900 miles. The other big accomplishment, I completed a bike ride to the south without rain interrupting it. I started at 10:32 AM riding my Canyon Endurace bike on the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route covering 34.65 miles which increased my week to 118.32 miles. I still have a shot at hitting 200+ miles for the week but I will need to ride all 3 days. Today was the 8th time riding this route in 2020 and the longest of the 8 by .6 of a mile.

Rain wasn’t around but the heat and humidity were. Weather at the start and 1:09 PM finish: start 89 (77% humidity, 81 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph. Finish 94 (59% humidity, 77.2 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. Unlike the wind during the Vuelta a Burgos race today it was not too strong on my bike ride. The toughest section came as I rode west over Lake Houston. Passing traffic blocked it some but when they left the wind tried to make up for the interruption.

My GoPro Hero 7 Black camera may return on Friday. Saturday will be an opportunity to see if the freezing during recording disappeared. I am still trying to figure out a mounting solution on the Canyon Endurace handlebar.

COVID-19 forces bike ride to go virtual, but its cancer-fighting goal rides on

Kevin Reece | www.wfaa.com

DALLAS — COVID-19 has changed so many things. We say that a lot these days. But for a group of college students, it has not changed their dedication to a worthy and life-saving cause.

If this was a normal year, 80 college students would be on their bicycles right now pedaling 4,000 miles from Austin, Texas all the way to Anchorage, Alaska raising money to fight cancer. It’s called the Texas 4000 for Cancer, a coveted and competitive 18-month leadership program that includes 50 hours of volunteer community service and culminates with the …

Biking In The Rain Becoming The Norm Around Here

Texbiker.net Posted on July 29, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 29, 2020

After yesterday’s rained out bike ride to the south I turned to the north for today’s ride. Starting at 10:28 AM after watching stage 2 of the Vuelta a Burgos on Flobikes.com I chose the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route riding 35.16 miles. Those miles moved July’s total to 850.06 miles putting even more over my 800 mile goal. The week now totals 83.67 miles. I will need some weather cooperation if I am going hit 200+ miles for the week. Today marks the 16th time to ride this route in 2020; 4 times on the Lynskey R300 counting today, and 12 times on the Canyon Endurace CF SLX.

Speaking of the weather, it started off sunny with friendly white puffy clouds dotting the sky. By the time I finished at 1:13 PM those puffy white clouds turned gray and wet over Kingwood as I biked in the rain the last two miles. Biking in the rain is becoming the norm around here. Don’t let the video thumbnail fool you about today’s bike ride. The closer I got to Kingwood the wetter the sky looked. The temperature dropped and the wind picked up. And I got wet, AGAIN! I thought I could get home before the rain caught me but that didn’t happen. Conditions at the start and finish: start 90 (72% humidity, 79.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. Finish 80 (89% humidity, 76.4 dew point), light rain, wind SW 16 mph gusts 27 mph.

Most of the route the wind was manageable but I felt the increased wind by the time I approached Kings Manor and into Kingwood. Strava reports my effort was harder than usual. Some data points:

  • average heart rate 133 bpm
  • maximum heart rate 160 bpm
  • average cadence 76 rpm
  • maximum cadence 101 rpm
  • average power 74 watts
  • maximum power 337 watts

Houston mulls changing weird green parking spots into bike lanes

By Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

Green means go, for parking? A truck belonging to a contractor working on traffic signals blocks the designated bike lane on Gray Street near Brazos Street on Tuesday, July 28, 2020

Bicycling in Houston can be dangerous, to say the least.

Over the last few years, the city implemented special lanes for bikes along some of the busiest thoroughfares in and around downtown, and more are planned elsewhere. But spend a day on two wheels, and you’re bound to come across some driver’s car parked in the middle of one of these bright green bike lanes.

It’s a problem that has plagued bicyclists for just as long as the bike lanes have existed, as first reported by Houston Public Media’s transportation reporter Gail Delaughter. …

Rocky Mountain recalls bicycles that pose fall and injury hazard

By Burg Simpson | www.burgsimpson.com

The latest bike-related recall should serve to remind all cyclists of the dangers of biking and the importance of taking safety precautions. On July 16, 2020, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that Rocky Mountain Bicycles was recalling three models of its alloy-framed bicycles after determining they posed a fall and injury hazard to riders. According to the recall, the bicycle’s front frame triangle can crack and separate the head tube from the frame itself. The rider could fall and potentially be seriously injured if that separation occurs.

Rocky Mountain is recalling more than 1,500 bikes sold at stores nationwide from 2017 through 2020 for …

The Top 3 Ways Bicycling Can Hurt Your Skin and What to Do About It

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Riding a bicycle is of course a whole body activity, and one part that is often overlooked but key to keeping healthy is the epidermis. There are lots of things that can hurt the wrapping of your meat sack. There are things that can take you off the bicycle, from chafing to road rash, sunburn and even skin cancer, So it’s important to prevent what damage you can to your flesh blanket. OK, I’m out of words for skin, so let’s get into it. Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor so refer to one for more information. And I don’t get paid for …
