About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Painted Churches, Mountain Bike Texas Bicycling News – March 6, 2024

Texbiker.net Posted on March 6, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMarch 6, 2024

Painted Churches Tour 2.0

Brad L | www.bikeforums.net

I’m leading another tour of the Painted Churches around Schulenburg, Texas. Last year we had a really nice time despite the cold and dampness. It actually sleeted at the allotted start time, so we all grabbed coffee and started an hour later. It was perfect! This will be a couple of weeks later so the temps “should” be a little warmer. We had a few BFers come out including pastorbobnlnh , panzerwagon , joesch , and rccardr . It’ll be on April 6th and any bike, no matter the material, is eligible as long as it was made in the 20th century.

The route is approximately 48 miles with about 2,200 feet of elevation gain. Moderately hilly by Houston standards, and moderately flat by Austin’s. A vintage drivetrain can easily handle the hills.

This will be a semi-supported tour. We’ll have a sag driver, but bring extra water, your favorite sports drinks, food, etc. and we’ll load it all into the sag vehicle.

We’ll start at 9am from the parking lot nearest the railroad tracks at the corner of N. Main St. and S. Upton Ave. in Schulenburg. Let me know if there’s interest. I hope to see you there.

EDIT: I had to change the date to the 6th/7th due to conflicts with two other large rides in the area.

Mountain Biking Palo Duro Canyon, TX – Day 1

Half Fast Hugo | www.youtube.com

Got into Amarillo in time to slip into Palo Duro Canyon for some mountain biking. I’m staying here for two days so tomorrow should be a bigger ride but, I thought I would at least get a shorter ride in today.

The trails and canyon are beautiful. I did a short loop on the Capitol Peak trail and a little bit of the Rio Grande trail. Both were fun and I’m looking forward to tomorrow for sure! My Texas BBQ lunch and a beer were fighting back a little so hopefully tomorrow will be more productive!

I rolled the Ibis Exie on this one just like in Tulsa. No need for the enduro bike at this point and I sure do love riding the Exie as it’s such a great bike.

New Features at Gateway Park, Ft Worth Texas

MG12K | www.youtube.com

The trail stewards keep adding more features to my favorite line in DFW. Brian’s Line starts at the bottom of Wax’s loop and makes for an awesome run. Go check this place out. For not having much elevation to work with the guys have been real creative in what they have accomplished!

Texas Hill Country Mountain Biking: 8 Best Places to Ride Near Austin

By Becky Timbers | www.twowheeledwanderer.com

Texas has never really been on my must-ride list for mountain biking. Sure, I’ve heard of Spider Mountain (Texas’s one and only chairlift-accessed bike park), but it’s a state that I haven’t exactly felt drawn to.

But as I was planning my nth drive back across the country from Arizona, I thought “Why not?” Austin is supposed to be a cool city and I’ve heard rumors of some good singletrack riding in Hill Country. It also helped that a TWW reader was stationed in Austin and offered to show me around.

I’m so glad I took the bait! I’ve had a blast exploring the trail networks in Texas’s Hill Country from the maze of singletrack at …

Bikesmith Waco opens as new hub for cycling enthusiasts

wacotrib.com

“No doubt, Bicycle World was a great supporter of our biking community and events,” Waco Parks and Recreation Director Jonathan Cook said. "Waco is …

Shane Howard pulls down a bike in his revamped shop at 720 Elm Ave., Bikesmith Waco. The shop opened its doors this past weekend with designs on expanding into the rest of its building and adding a pump track in its backyard.

Bicycle World downtown has closed, removing an option available to cycling enthusiasts wanting to invest in a new ride, repair or accessorize their existing model, or rub elbows and swap stories with fellow devotees. But a new place, Bikesmith Waco, has tossed its protective helmet into the arena, having opened over the weekend at 720 Elm Ave. The business was founded in 2020, previously carrying the OTB Cyclery moniker. Owner Shane Howard temporarily pulled the plug on operations while pursuing a firefighting career and training with the Killeen Fire Department. That work continues, but Howard reached the point he could resurrect his bike shop. "This is the area’s only mountain bike-focused store conveniently located near one of the best bike parks in Texas, Cameron Park, as well as Baylor University,”

I surveyed the White Oak Bayou Hike and Bike Trail recently. Paving is now complete from Gessner to Hollister except for 2 short segments west of Fairbanks N. Houston. I think one section is might be due to the gargoyle. pic.twitter.com/yxCgst59Ov

Familiar Route With Some Different Streets. Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on March 6, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMarch 6, 2024

I decided to ride a familiar route to the north but mix up some of the streets. I rode a greenbelt trail that was not in the usual line up, through North Woodland Hills Village, entered Woodridge Forest on Woodridge Parkway, checked out the Peppervine houses that didn’t exist the last time I biked there, and took Bentwood Oaks Drive into Oakhurst after a long absence. I called this the Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route because most of the streets were the same. This was the third bike ride on this route in 2024. Because of the changed streets Strava didn’t find any matching rides. The average distance is a little over 32 miles but with the change in streets I rode 33.17 miles increasing the week’s total to 104.9. I’m getting close to 200 miles for March with 188.72. I rode my Lynskey Helix bike for the first time this week. The temperature was a few degrees lower and the wind stayed below 8 mph. AXS.SRAM.com ride report.

Weather: Start 76 degrees, humidity 69%, dew point 65.2, mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph; Finish 81 degrees, humidity 61%, dew point 66.2, partly cloudy, wind S 7 mph.

2024 College Station Team Practice at Lake Bryan

Texas Interscholastic Mountain Bike League | www.youtube.com

Join the Texas NICA College Station High School and Middle School Mountain bike team for a weekend practice at Lake Bryan, just out side of College Station, Texas! At this practice, the team went for a lap around the west loop and focused on their handling skillz. These tight, twisting trails are mostly flat with numerous roots and sandy loose corners. The trails have evolved a bit over the years, especially the west side, with a bit more flow then they used to have.

Breaking Out Of A Flat Tire Funk. Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive

Texbiker.net Posted on March 5, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMarch 5, 2024

For the first ride since February 21st I did not have a flat on my Cervelo Caledonia. Back then I ran over a sharp rock cutting through the tire and the tube. The four previous rides to today each had one or more flats when the adhesive patch didn’t stick. On my last ride I replaced the rear tube and the ride today went without a hitch. The began at 11:18 AM as I set off on my Cervelo Caledonia following the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route. This was the fifth time on this route in 2024. The 36.43 miles was close to the same distance as the other four rides. The wind was light and the temperature 80 and above by the time I finished at 2:04 PM. I’m making progress towards the 680 mile goal for March with 155.5 miles so far.

Weather: Start 80 degrees, humidity 68%, dew point 68.8, mostly cloudy, wind W 6 mph; Finish 85 degrees, humidity 57%, dew point 67.9, partly cloudy, wind calm.
