About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Mayor Kevin Cole announces a new trail in Pearland to boost outdoor activities and city connectivity. Set for completion in 2025, it promises enhanced community and sustainability.

At a recent community meeting held on February 21, Pearland Mayor Kevin Cole unveiled plans for a new hike and bike trail, marking a significant step towards connecting the west and east sides of the city. This $1.8 million initiative is part of the 2007 Trails Master Plan, which aims to enhance Pearland’s outdoor recreational facilities and promote a healthier lifestyle among its residents. Trail Development: From Concept to Reality

The journey to this new trail began with the construction of the Shadow Creek Ranch Trail, stretching from Kingsley Drive to Kirby Drive along the southern bank of Clear Creek, initiated in 2016. Following the successful completion of the Clear Creek Trail’s first phase in 2021, the city is now moving forward with the second phase. This next step involves the construction of a 10-foot wide concrete trail featuring a …

Flat Filled Fun, Atascocita – Indian Shores Road – Walden Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 2, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMarch 2, 2024

After watching the women’s and men’s Strade Bianche bike races I thought my ride would be sedate. Was I wrong. I rolled away at 10:54 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. The sky was overcast and the temperature hovered around 70 degrees. Fortunately the wind was light at 7 mph from the south which was where I was headed on my Atascocita – Indian Shores Road – Walden route. This was a different combination of streets and roads for the first time. Today was a variation of the Atascocita – Walden – Indian Shores Road route. I rode 38.28 miles and earned the Strava Local Legend on KPHS Sprint (55s) before all of the flat tire fun.

The ride was going great. I saw another cyclist on Fairlake Lane which I didn’t expect due to my late start. But as I passed the Pentecostal church on Old Atascocita Road the rear tire went flat at 19.0 miles. I circled back to the church to find a spot to fix the flat. It turned out to be the same patch from the sharp rock several rides ago. The adhesive patch was not sealed on one edge. I replaced that patch with another adhesive patch, stuffed the tube back in the tire, aired it up, and it held pressure. While I was fixing the flat a number of other cyclists went by headed west. Back on the bike I rode to Indian shores Road, made a u-turn and headed to Huffman and FM1960.

All was still good with the rear tire. I looped through Walden after crossing Lake Houston. Riding north back to Kingwood on Upper Lake Drive the rear tire went flat again at 32.5 miles. This was the same patch. I think I’ve patched this tube 4 times in the same spot. This time I replaced the tube with my spare TPU tube. I aired the tire up and continued to Kingwood. As I passed a house with a trash can in the street I dumped the leaking tube in it. The rest of the ride went well and I finished at 2:42 PM with no other flat problems.

Mountain Biking at Flat Rock Ranch in Comfort, Texas

By Becky Timbers | www.twowheeledwanderer.com

As I was planning my drive from Arizona to the Austin area of Texas to explore the mountain biking in Hill Country, I saw a network of spaghetti-like trails in a place called Comfort. After a little more digging, I realized that this place – Flat Rock Ranch – was actually a pretty big deal and I definitely needed to check it out.

Flat Rock Ranch is a privately owned piece of property (if you can call 13,000 acres a ‘piece’…) that has slowly been transformed into a destination for mountain bikers. With over 35 miles of trails and set in a stunning location, it’s a unique place that is well worth the visit.

Jimmy, the great-grandson of the …

March Bike Rides Begin, Big Plume Of Smoke, Audio Fixed. Kingwood – Brooklyn Trails

Texbiker.net Posted on March 1, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMarch 1, 2024

Lots of sun to start March bike rides. It was a little cooler than I prefer and I delayed the start until 12:25 PM to get a couple more degrees of warmth. Riding my Cervelo Caledonia around Kingwood, over to the US59 northbound frontage road and back through Brooklyn Trails was a great start towards my 680 road mile goal for March. As I made my way into Woodridge Forest I heard a bunch of sirens and rounding a corner a big plume of smoke rose in the southern sky. It slowly thinned out. When I crossed over Northpark Drive looking west the traffic was stopped around Russell Palmer Drive with fire equipment blocking the street. The smoke was almost gone. At the start I guessed the ride would be 20 miles long and turned out to be 20.34 miles. I set a new Strava PR on Kris Spraggins Memorial Route (2:03). Weather: Start 67 degrees, humidity 60%, dew point 52.7, mostly cloudy, wind SE 4 mph; Finish 72 degrees, humidity 54%, dew point 54.7, partly cloudy, wind SW 4 mph.

Lately the audio on the ride videos has been bad. I looked at some potential causes and narrowed it to the cable connecting the wireless Rode mic to the GoPro camera media mod. I replaced the cable for today’s ride and the audio is back to normal. The damaged cable connector photos below. I think the cable damage happened during a ride when I dropped the GoPro.
