About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Thursday Gravel Ride with Jhonny and Ayon Gillespie County, Texas

David Patterson | strava.com

Well that was a memorable ride! (Cold, walking thru a water crossing in freezing cold water, legs were not fully recovered from Saturday’s 138 mile ride so I cut my route short from 100 down to 72, power meter and cadence was not reading on my head unit for the 1st 40 plus miles) For the last 30 miles: …

Leap Day Riding Zwift Watopia’s Waistband, No Leaping Necessary

Texbiker.net Posted on February 29, 2024 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 29, 2024

After spending almost a week in Harlingen I drove home yesterday to a cool front passing through. It was 49 degrees when I got up and didn’t warm up beyond 54 degrees when I started my Zwift ride. Riding around Watopia proper including downtown Watopia, Fuego Flats, the Italian Villas, the Volcano, and the Fishing Village. Lead-in is 1.5 miles and 19 feet elevation gain. Full route is 17.3 miles and 331 feet climbing. A Leap Year ride. Below is a history of my previous rides on this route. Today was one of the faster rides.

I wrapped up February biking with 728.88 miles, 533.7 road miles and 195.18 Zwift miles. I exceeded my 445 road mile goal and made up 88.7 miles that I was short on my January goal.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) – A man hit by two drivers in the Copperwood neighborhood in northwest Harris County has died, according to deputies.

Harris County sheriff’s deputies said the man was riding a bike around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday when he was hit while crossing FM-529 near Highway 6.

Officials said the impact threw the man off the bike, and as he was walking to pick it up, he was hit by a second car.

The driver of the first vehicle that hit the man stopped and rendered aid, HCSO said.

Meanwhile, the second driver kept going, but …

BCycle reopens on campus after hiatus

By Kenzie Langhorne | www.ricethresher.org

Rentable bike share stations reopened across campus the week of Feb. 12 after a temporary suspension in December 2022. The stations were reopened through a partnership between Rice’s Campus Services and Sustainability division and Houston Bike Share.

Houston BCycle, run by the nonprofit Houston Bike Share, is reopening closed stations after Houston city officials approved $500,000 to keep the network operational. The station suspensions came from a decision to cut costs to keep the network running.

“The return of BCycle stations furthers the …

The Marshall Police Department is expanding its coverage of the city in new ways with the addition of three new uniformed bicycle patrol officers to its department.

Two trails in Denton are being officially renamed — learn more about who they’re honoring

By Christian McPhate | dentonrc.com

Denton City Council is honoring two people who died with connections to Denton’s trails by renaming trails at South Lakes Park and Hartlee Field Mountain Bike Park.

The two people were Dylan Dorrell, a 17-year-old Guyer High School student, and Jeff LaQuey, a 69-year-old cyclist who helped design and build several trails in Denton.

The “Dylan Dorrell Memorial Trail” will be located at South Lakes Park, while the “Jeff LaQuey Memorial Trail” will be located at the Hartlee Field Mountain Bike Park.

City staffers didn’t have …

Texas MS 150: Two ConocoPhillips employees share why they ride

BY GUS MORGAN | www.conocophillips.com

Andy Flowers and Caroline Barrett will be among the ConocoPhillips employees participating in the Texas MS 150 2024 on April 27-28. While multiple sclerosis (MS), has impacted their lives in different ways, both are united in their fight against this neurological disease. Read on to learn why they ride.

‘You’ve got to have a positive attitude’

It’s been over 27 years, but Andy remembers the day his wife’s mobility took a turn for the worse.

At the time, Andy and his wife, Rena, were living in Houston, about a year after their daughter, Annie, was born.

“I remember coming back to the house — we had a two story — and Annie needed changing, but the supplies were upstairs, and Rena couldn’t climb the stairs to get them. She was very upset.”

That concerning occurrence, in addition to earlier motor-control incidents and other mysterious …

The council introduced the topic during their Feb. 20 meeting at Horseshoe Bay City Hall, 1 Community Drive. “We put a bicycle lane on Horseshoe Bay Boulevard two or three years ago, and it’s been well received. It came up during the Transportation Committee’s review that there’s some…

Fort Worth moves forward with bike lane project east of downtown

By Teresa Gubbins | fortworth.culturemap.com

In a win for the bicycle community, Fort Worth is moving forward with a new bike lane project coming to East 1st Street and East 4th Street, east of downtown.

The East Fourth Street/First Street Bike Lane project is significant not only because it increases bicycling options, but also because it uses a new technology that will make it safer.

One existing lane along East 4th Street/East 1st Street will become a bike lane, which will run in both directions in a 2-mile span from I-35W to Haltom Road. They’ll also build in …

Video: Waco ISD encouraging students to ride towards perfect attendance

By: Heather Healy | www.kxxv.com

WACO, Texas — For the past two years, Waco native and Chicago Bear defensive lineman Andrew Billings has had an initiative with J.H. Hines Elementary where every six weeks, two bikes are given out for each grade level (kindergarten-fifth grade) for perfect attendance, or, missing two or less days of school. It’s an incentive that Billings says starts to implement early so these kids have a bright future ahead.

BROADCAST SCRIPT “What kid doesn’t want a bicycle?,” said J.H. Hines Principal Cynthia Wise.

This scene looks a little out of place, as you usually don’t see bikes given out until the holidays, but this giveaway is little different. …
