About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Where to find The Woodlands’ six new bike rack artworks

By Claire Partain | www.houstonchronicle.com

After debuting more than 30 art benches across the township, The Woodlands Arts Council has pivoted to installing six new bike racks around Town Center. The new racks serve for both art and function, taking the form of musical notes, children’s toys and abstract sculptures. The council debuted five of the new racks in late 2023 and is currently installing its final piece, “Reflections,” on Waterway Square. “This program is ongoing, continues to beautify our community, and supports our mission to promote art in the community,” the council said on its webiste. The Woodlands has …

Residents frustrated as bike lane project in Shearer Hills/Ridgeview remains stagnant

Patty Santos | www.ksat.com

The neighborhood was named a priority in 2011, but bike lanes are still absent

SAN ANTONIO – Libby Day says one of her favorite things about the Shearer Hills/Ridgeview neighborhood is its position within the city to places like the airport, shopping centers and downtown San Antonio.

“Everything that you need is super close. But there are some challenges when it comes to getting around,” the avid bicyclist said. “There’s no north-south thoroughfare that is safe, to get in or out of this neighborhood.”

The community sits close to the U.S Highway 281 and Loop 410 intersection between Basse and Blanco roads — all busy thoroughfares.

“I would love to ride my bike to …

The Risks Involved in an Average Bicycle Commute in Austin

thekatynews.co

Cyclists are not immune to accidents anywhere in the world, especially not in Austin, where traffic congestion is thicker than peanut butter on toast.

Back in 2018, Austin, Texas, was acknowledged as one of the best bike cities in America. Up to 13% of the city’s population commutes to work on a bicycle.

These cyclists are vulnerable to accidents due to the dense traffic. Austin bicycle accident lawyers usually have a lot on their hands due to the number of collisions that happen each year. Austin Bicycle Crash Statistics

In 2021, the Texas Department of Transportation reported 733 bicycle crashes in the city. Out of these incidents, …

Opinion: Cyclists, the second-class road users

Eddie Phillips | thebatt.com

Why support infrastructure if infrastructure doesn’t support you?

When college stress hits hard, my go-to remedy is an episode of NHK World’s “Somewhere Street.” The show features expertly intrusive hosts who carry cameras and walk cities around the world. It’s the best thing since sliced bread: anyone can catch a glimpse without the inconvenience of traveling. For the night’s episode, the host planned an hour-long walk through Amsterdam.

The Dutch capital is a place where cyclists dominate the city. Painted bike lanes crisscross the city, extending in every direction. Alleys are windy and unpredictable: a driver’s nightmare. In fact, entire tunnels are carved out as shortcuts for cyclists — a sharp contrast to College Station.

However, the difference is understandable. Both in College Station and nationwide, cyclists …

Houston BCycle, facing imminent shutdown, lowers prices and reactivates some stations to boost ridership

Adam Zuvanich | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

The decade-old bike-sharing system, which expects to wind down when a METRO-run network comes online, continues to seek additional riders and revenue. A new partnership with Rice University figures to help.

Houston BCycle’s days continue to be numbered, with the nonprofit bike-sharing service planning to wind down its operations when the region’s public transit provider can stand up a network of its own.

In the meantime, BCycle has reduced its prices and reactivated some of its stations with the hopes of re-boosting ridership and revenue while extending its runway as long as possible.

Eight suspended stations on the campus of Rice University were reactivated last week, with …

Double Trouble On A Nice Day. New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch

Texbiker.net Posted on February 21, 2024 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 21, 2024

When I left home on today’s bike ride at 11:30 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia I was buoyed by the warm sunny weather. I chose my New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch route heading north to loop through Tavola before heading back to Kingwood. The ride was going great with a 13 mph (25 mph gusts) tailwind helping me. That came to a halt on the US59 frontage road passing the Clayton Homes sales lot. My rear tire went flat quickly. I walked into the Clayton Homes lot and found a set of steps to check out the problem. It was obvious rotating the rear wheel, a sharp piece of shiny rock sticking out of the tire. I pulled the tube out, roughed up the rubber, and applied the adhesive patch. airing up the tire my patch job looked successful and I headed off to Tavola.

I rode through Tavola, west on Roman Forest Blvd, under US59, and south on the frontage road. Just before reaching the entrance to Tavola West the rear tire went flat again. I walked to a place with less noise sitting on a sanitary drain lid (it didn’t smell too bad because I don’t think anyone has moved into a home yet). Removing the adhesive patch I decided to replace it with a glued patch. But when I squeezed the glue tube nothing came out. The only option was another adhesive patch. This was at 19.9 miles into what turned out to be a 37.68 mile bike ride. After the failure of my previous patch attempt I was concerned about finishing the ride. I prayed to the Lord, put the tube back in the tire, and pumped it up. This time the patch held and I made it home later than I planned but happy at 3:27 PM.

The strong wind made the ride back from Tavola hard on my legs. Each time I rode over bumpy sections of road I wondered if my patch work would hold. the biggest test came riding over the cobbles exiting Oakhurst on Rock Creek Drive. They are rough but the tire made it.

Weather: Start 75 degrees, humidity 65%, dew point 62.2, partly cloudy, wind S 13 mph gusts 25 mph; Finish 78 degrees, humidity 58%, dew point 61.7, mostly clear, wind S 13 mph gusts 23 mph.
