About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Squeeze Tires The Night Before When There’s Time To Fix A Flat

Texbiker.net Posted on November 18, 2023 by Rick AnkrumNovember 18, 2023

Good thing I squeezed the rear tire on my Cervelo Caledonia last night. It was very soft so I set about fixing the flat. The hardest part was getting the Continental GatorShell tire off the rim and then back on the rim. In between that I found a microscopic hole and patched it. But re-mounting the tire I pinched the tube adding another hole. I opted to replace the tube. The tube has a removable valve core so I hope that doesn’t come back to haunt me if I have to fix a flat out on the road. I tightened the valve core so hopefully it will not unscrew after pumping up the tire. This would’ve made today’s bike ride start much later. A smaller fix was replacing the speed sensor battery as I was getting ready to roll out the door. No problem getting that exchanged.

With all of that behind me I started the ride at 11:16 AM riding the Cervelo Caledonia bike. The late start probably was going to mean not seeing other cyclists. I compensated for the late start by choosing the Atascocita – Spanish Cove – Walden route to shorten the time and distance to get to FM 1960 where I usually see cyclists. They were long gone by the time I got there. Today marked the 8th time on this route in 2023. I biked 34.43 miles getting to within 20 miles of my 360 road mile goal for November. I achieved two Strava top results: 3rd fastest time on Kings Crossing South (2:03) and Local Legend on Kings Harbor Loop Reverse. I finished the ride at 1:55 PM.

The sun tried to stay out but the clouds had their day. This made the perceived chill go up and down. I wore a light weight long sleeve jersey and a short sleeve jersey but a heavier long sleeve jersey would’ve felt warmer. Weather: Start 70 degrees, humidity 73%, dew point 60.8, mostly cloudy, wind NE 10 mph; Finish 72 degrees, humidity 68%, dew point 60.9, mostly cloudy, wind variable 5 mph.

Root Canal Yesterday, Biking Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Today

Texbiker.net Posted on November 17, 2023 by Rick AnkrumNovember 17, 2023

Root canal on Thursday and deary weather kept me inside. The weather improved and the root canal is history. Today’s bike ride went south through Atascocita, looped through Walden, and crossed Lake Houston to FM 2100 where i made the turn to head back to Kingwood. The ride started at 10:41 AM and ended at 1:25 PM. I rode my Lynskey Helix bike on a slightly different Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route. The first 6 miles was where I made some changes. According to SportTracks this was the 20th time biking this route but Strava didn’t find any matches, probably because of the changes I made. I did see another cyclist on Rustic Woods Drive in Kingwood less than 2 miles from the finish. It felt good to ride outside. I bundled up a little with a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve one. No leg warmers needed. Weather: Start 71 degrees, humidity 72%, dew point 61.0, mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph; Finish 75 degrees, humidity 62%, dew point 61.3, mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph. This is not going to be a 200 mile week but it will be 100+ miles.

City recycling program, community shelter begin reusing bicycles

Paichia Hsu | www.ntdaily.com

The City of Denton’s Solid Waste and Recycling department has begun collecting reusable bikes over the past few months and giving them to Denton’s Community Shelter for refurbishing.

The department started to retain reusable bikes it received after it noticed some of the bicycles were still in functional condition. The team spent around four months accumulating 28 bicycles and donated them to the community shelter in mid-September, said John Washington, supervisor of the Home Chemical Collection Field Services.

“It wasn’t anything noticeable and then one day four and five appeared, and they were in good condition,” Washington said. “Everyone in the department thought, ‘that’s a shame […]’ so we started setting them aside and researching on how we could repurpose those.”

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, …

Pop A Richardson, Texas

Zac visiting from Utah. Around Northstar and Renner he asked if I had a hex wrench to fix his seat. I suggested we shortcut way at the top of the route and then stop to fix there. But then Kimath got a flat and we decided we could fit his seat then and ride with Kimath. Brenn and Clint were behind us because Brenn had flatted earlier. They stopped. The four of us watched Kimath try to fix his tire. He put a tube in, but couldn’t get the tire back on. He called it. So we went on without him. Shortcutted. Brenn, Zac, and Clint just killing me. Especially Zac. We rode opposite up Murphy and then left on Parker. The group intersected us at Parker, but we had to go quite a ways before we could turn around. We came perhaps within about 45 seconds of catching the group at 544, but we missed the light. And that’s all she wrote.
