About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

First Ride On Zwift’s Watopia The Big Ring

Texbiker.net Posted on October 30, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 30, 2023

During the night the temperature dropped into the mid 40’s, below my outside riding threshold of 60 degrees. To add to the misery it rained lightly most of the morning. It was a good time to ride Zwift. Today was the first day to ride new Watopia routes and I chose The Big Ring route. The official distance is 30.4 miles and I rode a little farther at 30.71 miles. I didn’t try to ride at a fast pace so it took me 2:06:50. This was one of the routes in stage 5 of the Tour of Watopia.

I did not livestream the ride but recorded it to test adding my voice comments to the video. The audio didn’t come through as loud as I wanted but it is there. It takes a long time to process a video this long so I will probably livestream Zwift ride to eliminate that. The weather probably will repeat tomorrow meaning I will ride Zwift. I will ride another Watopia route.

The Big Ring details from ZwiftInisder.com: As one of the longest of the eight routes released with Zwift’s October 2023 southern coast expansion, “The Big Ring” is a big ring that lets you stay in the big ring. It’s the longest flat route in Watopia! I climbed 883 feet so using the term “flat” stretches the meaning for me. Notice the big peak in the map below. There are four sprints along the route. I was near the bottom of time on each.

Galena Park ghost stories and smokestacks on display for Halloween air quality tour

Rebekah F. Ward | www.houstonchronicle.com

Five-year-old Ivan Mendoza wore a billowing Batman cape and a toothy smile Saturday morning as his Hulk-clad dad pedaled the pair around Galena Park and Jacinto City, two east side suburbs near Houston’s ship channel.

The Mendozas were among dozens of people who joined or cheered on a 7-mile, Halloween-themed bike ride led by Juan Flores, 45, a Galena Park resident working for the pollution awareness nonprofit Air Alliance Houston.

Flores took the group through his stomping ground, pausing to share pollution anecdotes and the occasional ghost story: apparitions wearing old-timey …

Bob Hake’s journey across the USA from September 2023 to November 2023

#1: Day 35: 10/28/23 Somerville to New Waverly,TX By sedona_rocks on Sun 29 Oct 2023 07:32 (US/Pacific) Reply Rating: (0) Well my bike worked like a champ today. I started out a little uncertain but it performed well in a 73 mile test. Today was a hot, muggy day but there was no rain. Correction, it was raining when we woke up and during breakfast but stopped before we got on our bikes. We rode past many, many cow pastures today. I stopped in a quaint gas station/grocery and the owner asked me to sign a registry he keeps of all the thru-bikers. I scanned over 3,4 pages of what others had written and …

Day 37 – New Waverly to Shepherd, TX

Sunday October 29, 2023, 52 miles (84 km) – Total so far: 2,011 miles (3,236 km) Again, a little bit of a warm night. I shouldn’t be complaining about that because tomorrow the high is going to be 49 degrees and a 70% chance of rain again. In fact, at the place we are staying tonight it is getting cold quick.

Great ride today. We rode along tree lined roads most of the day. Once in a while you would see some cow pasture but we are in a lot of trees. There was a bit of climbing and ups and downs but things definitely are changing. We are only one or two hundred feet above sea level and things are leveling out.

My odometer went over 2,000 miles today. I can’t believe we have traveled that distance. In fact, the ride will end …

Smooth Turning Waxed Chain. Biking Kingwood – Forest Cove – San Jacinto Bayou Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on October 29, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 29, 2023

After Wednesday’s bike ride on my Lynskey Helix I cleaned the chain and waxed it. I felt the difference on today’s bike ride. The chain turned easily and was much quieter. The chain had the original lube from when I received it last year. I should’ve cleaned and waxed it then. The Helix felt like a new bike today. My legs enjoyed the smooth chain revolutions. and snappy gear changes.

The route for today’s ride resembles the one I rode on October 8th. Today I biked through Kingwood, Woodridge Forest, to US59, Brooklyn Trails, back to Woodridge Forest, several Kingwood villages, Forest Cove, and the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway. The downhill on Burning Tree Drive in Forest Cove reached 23.4 mph coasting. Strava recorded my 3rd fastest time on Lost Cove (13:20). That covers the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway. I call this route Kingwood – Forest Cove – San Jacinto Bayou Greenway.

The October 8th ride covered 23.94 miles and today was 22.34 miles. The streets weren’t new but the combination was. Those miles closed the week at 233.33 miles and October now totals 829.2 road miles or 876.81 including 2 Zwift rides.

Round the Block: The last leg

By Curtis Stoker | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 36 – Somerville to New Waverly, TX

Saturday October 28, 2023, 73 miles (117 km) – Total so far: 1,959 miles (3,153 km) We woke to a few showers this morning. It went the entire night without anything and then it showers just enough to get the tent all wet. So it got packed up wet, but as we arrived in camp tonight, the sun was shining and it was 85 degrees so things dried out pretty quickly.

During the night and in the morning the humidity level is at 98%. It’s crazy. When your from Idaho, it is suffocating. When you ride, the sweat doesn’t evaporate. It just runs down your brow and down your arms. Your shirt and riding pants get wet with sweat and they don’t dry out all day. That can really make chaffing a problem in certain areas. It’s the first time on the trip I had to use skin lubricant. Thanks Bruce for your gift before I started this trip. ? My friend Bruce from Burley rode the Southern Tier this spring with his wife providing the SAG and gave me his remaining cream and said, “You’ll need this.” …
