About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Zwift Watopia Canopies and Coastlines Route Extended

Texbiker.net Posted on November 1, 2023 by Rick AnkrumNovember 1, 2023

Today I rode the third new route in Watopia, Canopies and Coastlines. The route description listed 17.1 miles and 806 feet of climbing. I wanted to ride more miles so I created a meetup using the Canopies and Coastlines route as the base and made the distance 22 mile. With the added 4.9 miles I had no idea how much climbing or the roads after finishing Canopies and Coastlines. It turns out the climbing totaled 1083 feet with most of the 4.9 miles going uphill. My legs got a workout. There were several sprints. I set new Zwift personal records on the Woodland Sprint (45.39 seconds) and the Stoneway Sprint (48.81 seconds). Strava does not list these sprints as segments thus not showing the results. The start time was 12:15 PM. Outside the temperature was in the low 50’s, sunny with a north wind at 11 mph. The reasons I chose Zwift today.

The recording and editing today changed. I lowered the Zwift sound volume in Zwift, moved the mic for my audio in front of the bike, recorded clips rather the whole ride, and us Premier Elements to edit. I need to learn more about DaVinci Resolve to edit.

Here’s where TxDOT is funding safer bike trails and walkways across North Texas

KERA | By Pablo Arauz Peña | www.keranews.org

Officials at the Texas Department of Transportation last week announced an historic investment in bike trails and pedestrian walkways as demand grows for more walkable neighborhoods across the region.

The Texas Transportation Commission approved $345 million in federal fundsfor projects that include Five Mile Creek Trail in Southern Dallas and the Cotton Belt/Silver Line Rail Trail that will run from the North Dallas suburbs to East Fort Worth.

The funding is about six times more than the $55 million TxDOT made available in 2021 for what it calls Transportation Alternatives.

“The huge increase is due in part to …

Bob Hake’s journey across the USA from September 2023 to November 2023

#1: Day 38: 10/31/23 Silsbee to Merryville,TX By sedona_rocks on Tue 31 Oct 2023 18:32 (US/Pacific) Reply Rating: (0) We waited until 9:30 to get started in order to avoid the early showers. We didn’t get any rain on the ride today and in fact we rode in full sun after lunch. Yay. Nothing too special about our ride except that we made it out of Texas after 19 days. We’ll be in Louisiana for the next week. We are camping on the grounds of the Merryville Historical Society and Museum. They greeted us when we rolled in and then cooked a wonderful dinner this evening for us. We stuffed our faces with crawfish etouffee, fried shrimp, hush puppies, salad and a bunch of homemade desserts. The meal was followed by a short talk on the history of the area. It was all very wonderful. It is going down to 36 tonight so we are all bundled up in our tents. We have one more day of this cold snap before it starts to warm up. I think we are all looking forward to that.

Day 39 – Silsbee, TX to Merryville, LA: State #5!!

Tuesday October 31, 2023 It was a good thing we had indoor facilities last night. It got down to 44 degrees and the wind has been nonstop. We again waited until it looked like rain wouldn’t be a problem, so we didn’t get on the road until 9:30. It did work. No rain today.

However, the wind was not our friend. For weeks the wind has been coming from the southeast as we have been traveling southeast. Today we needed to travel north and guess what? It blew from the north at about 13 mph. Kind of aggravating. It seems the wind has been blowing against us most of the time.

Again I dressed and rode in my winter weather gear. I never did get too warm but I did ride comfortably. Many of the riders didn’t bring enough cold weather riding clothes. We have a couple more days of this cold and wind and then things are supposed to get back to normal. …

Exploring New Watopia Route: Coast Crusher

Texbiker.net Posted on October 31, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 31, 2023

The cool weather continued today, Tuesday, and I rode Zwift for the last activity in October. I chose another new Watopia route, Coast Crusher, riding 26.75 miles. The official distance was 26.4 miles but I continued pedaling after the end of the ride. The elevation gain was about 200 feet less than yesterday’s ride on Watopia’s The Big Ring and I was glad. I am a flatlander cyclist. The ride followed most of yesterday’s road on the new roads in Watopia doubling back where the Big Ring continued. . Today there were seven sprints (maybe more). I improved my time on three that repeated from yesterday: Sasquatch, Acroplois, and Stoneway.

October cycling came to an end today. My road mile goal was 700 and I rode 829.2 miles. Including Zwift rides I rode 934.28 miles. I rode 29 days. 26 days I rode outside and 3 days I rode Zwift. Zwift will probably increase in November as the weather cools. Summary of October’s activity and year progressions below.

Austin man bikes 500 miles just 3 months after major heart surgery

patch.com

Randy Greenberg, 65, credits his recovery to ‘transformative’ cardiac rehab and care at Ascension Seton

Randy Greenberg was an active 60-something, doing tough bike rides and keeping up with people much younger than him.

In 2022, he and his wife were taking a trip in their RV across the U.S. and had spent a month in Florida where they’d ridden bikes on flat roads. “When I came back to Austin and had trouble making it up hills and getting out of breath, at first I thought it was just being out of practice with hills,” he said.

Then his dentist noted that his blood pressure was 80/50 (normal is about 120/80). This led him to see Dr. Peter Monteleone, cardiologist with Ascension Seton, who performed a sonogram and echocardiogram and diagnosed Randy with a mitral valve prolapse. Because Randy had had a …

Bob Hake’s journey across the USA from September 2023 to November 2023

#1: Day 36: 10/29/23 New Waverly to Shepherd,TX By sedona_rocks on Mon 30 Oct 2023 13:57 (US/Pacific) Reply Rating: (0) Today was an easy 50 miler through the Texas countryside north of Houston. Nothing too special on the route. Just a nice Sunday morning ride. We are staying at a funky place called the Shepherd Sanctuary. It is an eclectic mix of buildings, some picked up and moved here from who knows where and others built on site. It is owned and run by Peach Williamson who is very kind and welcoming. I am staying in a small cabin which means I don’t have to pitch a tent and deal with it in the rain tomorrow. Spent the afternoon cleaning up, airing out all my stuff and doing some laundry. Jambalaya for dinner with apple pie for dessert. We have one more day in Texas and three weeks remaining in the entire adventure.

#1: Day 37: 10/30/23 Shepherd to Silsbee,TX By sedona_rocks on Mon 30 Oct 2023 15:35 (US/Pacific) Reply Rating: (0) We woke up to 48 degrees, rain and 14 mph winds from the north. Not ideal for biking to say the least. So we waited till there was a break in the rain and took off at 9:30. But about mile 5 the rain started again. I didn’t ride out of the rain until about mile 55. So it was about 50 miles of constant rain and the temps never got out of the 40s. My new Showers Pass coat and rain pants worked like a dream. I didn’t get wet except my feet. Can’t say the same for all my fellow riders. We are staying in another RV park in Silsbee,TX. Originally we were going to tent camp but were able to talk them into letting us sleep in the rec room. I was not looking forward to outdoor camping in the 30s. So we get to relax inside and watch Monday Night Football. Tomorrow is supposed to be dry, cold and windy. Dry is an improvement

Corpus Christi awarded $13M grant from Texas Transportation Commission

By: Tony Jaramillo | www.kristv.com

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Traffic is coming back to an abandoned railroad trestle that crosses Oso Bay. But it won’t be trains that will be rolling across that structure. Instead, it will be bikes and foot traffic.

The $13 million grant will turn the old railroad trestle into an ADA accessible, shared-use path that will connect a hike and bike trail from Holly Road to Flour Bluff Drive. The project is one of 83 across the state to be selected as a part of the Transportation Alternative Grant Program.

Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo said the grant is a "testament to …

Day 38 – Shepherd to Silsbee, TX

Monday October 30, 2023, 62 miles (100 km) – Total so far: 2,073 miles (3,336 km) Had a good rest in the “Barby Suite” as my co-riders are calling it. I even got visited by a friendly grey cat during the night. It just came and curled up by my feet during the night and kept those feet toasty warm. We woke to a 44 degree morning. We weren’t all that anxious to hit the road considering it was raining as well. We got our breakfast and packed our lunch taking our time. We waited for a break in the rain and took off. I was close to last taking off due to helping Bruce with a flat tire. It was probably lucky for me because I was able to ride the first 20 miles relatively dry. It really didn’t rain, but there was a mist in the air that got things a little wet.

At the 20 mile point, there was a donut shop and other riders were there. I stopped to get something and it started raining while I was there. The others took off and were now riding in the rain. A few others came in behind me and were pretty much waited an hour in the …

City of College Station hosts open house to get feedback on the future of new Southeast Park

By Donnie Tuggle | www.kbtx.com

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – College Station residents had the opportunity to provide feedback on the future of Southeast Park Monday night.

An open house was held at City Hall. The meeting did not include a formal presentation, but city staff presented 10 image boards for people to look at. Residents were able to provide feedback using comment cards and printed surveys.

Southeast Park was formerly known as Texas Independence Ballpark, but that project was put on hold due to soil conditions that would have required extensive remediation. The future 68-acre property is located off Rock Prairie Road west of William D. Fitch near Midtown College Station. …

… Suggestions for Southwest Park include the addition of bodies of water like a splash pad and fishing pond. Other options included amenities like bike trails, dog parks, disc golf, multi-purpose courts for sports like pickleball, and more.

City staff will use the feedback to create a plan for city leaders in the coming months.

“We’ve gotten over 400 survey responses, which has been really great. It’s a whole myriad of things. People are saying they’d like to see trails, they’d like to see pickleball, they’d like to see a pool, they’d like to see a pump track where you can ride bikes on. So, we’ve gotten a whole lot of really great feedback,” said Cain. …
