About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Turned Around by Some Rain – August 25th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 25, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 25, 2011

Today’s weather has a split personality. When I left home the sun was shining and the air felt cool from a rain front that tried to move through during the night. My rain gauge showed a paltry .08″ of rain but I will take whatever we can get. During my ride as I approached FM1960 to the south a light rain started to fall and as I rode east the rain started to fall harder so when I reached the 13.8 mile point I decided to turn around and head back. As I rode back the rain continued until I turned north off of FM1960 and then it gradually came to a stop. By the time I got home the sky was full sun and no rain was around. This is not surprising since I decided to wax my chain and wash the bike before riding.

My goal was to ride 28 miles but I ended up riding 24.47 miles due to the rain. I started late today at 11:09 because the radar showed some rain moving through the area to the south. When I started the temperature was 84 degrees and the breeze felt cool. By the time I got back the temperature was only 89 degrees. We are supposed to get over 100 again today but it may not make it. The reason I wanted to get 28 miles was so that when I ride in Hotter’n Hell 100 on Saturday I would get my year to date miles over 4,000. I can still make it but it will be close. Last year I rode 74.5 miles at the Hotter’n Hell 100.

August miles are now 487.87 and the year to date miles are 3926.52. Average speed was 15.5 mph and the max speed was 22.0 mph. My average cadence was 82.6 RPM, the highest in many rides.

Keeping the Average Speed Above 15 for the Third Day – August 24th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 24, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 24, 2011

I was trying to get started today before 9 AM but I guess I move too slow and ended up out the door at 9:12 AM. One thing I did improve slightly was my average speed. I moved it up to 15.3 mph (or 15.4 mph using Garmin Connect’s calculation). My max speed improved to 22.0 mph from 21.3 mph (Garmin Connect has a lower speed of 21.5 mph). Average cadence was almost identical to yesterday at 80.4 RPM.I am beginning to think tire pressure helps with my average speed. I aired my tires up to 110 PSI last Saturday and I think the rolling resistance is lower.

The temperature was not heated up yet being 84 degrees at the start and 92 at the finish. Wind was light at 6 mph and partly cloudy skies did not hide the sun though. In southeast Texas we are set to be above 100 degrees for several more days at least. Has anyone noticed that Fall is less than a month away? The weather man does not let this affect the temperature forecast.

I tried to duplicate yesterday’s route so that I could compare the two days better which I was able to do with the route miles at 29.16 (.o2 miles less than yesterday). There was one other biker that I passed today but I do not expect to see anyone during the day although I did see two bikers yesterday at a church parking lot. I think they were finished and loading their bikes into their cars.

August miles

  • August miles 463.39
  • This week miles 86.30
  • YTD miles 3902.04

Ok – you have to ride first !!
That’s right!  Every year, for one night, we move the start of the Thursday Night Rider to a new and fun place where we can purchase nice cold and fun beverages after the ride.  This year is a bit different.  We are starting from a place where the beverages are a lot healthier – but just as tasty!  Same start time (6:30pm) for all routes. …
