About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Time Trials – Glen Rose, TX

Texbiker.net Posted on August 23, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 23, 2011

TEXAS TIME TRIALS BRINGS BICYCLE RACING TO GLEN ROSE
SEPTEMBER 22-24, 2011

GLEN ROSE, TEXAS – More than 300 bicycle racers and volunteers from around the world, the United States and from around the block will again converge in Glen Rose for The Texas Time Trials September 22-24.  With the warm reception experienced during the 2009 and 2010 race series, officials from the City of Glen Rose and Tejas Sports Productions are both excited to see the event return a third year.

The Texas Time Trials is a series of 5 races on a scenic and challenging 26.5 mile looped course starting and finishing at Glen Rose City Park (Rodeo Park).  With the dramatic finishes of all 5 races at 6:00pm Saturday, September 25 this is an event to be seen, not just read about. The location offers great facilities for racers and spectators alike.

“We are excited to again have the Texas Time Trials in Glen Rose. The event is great for the local economy and it is inspiring to see these great athletes working so hard to qualify for the Race Across America.” – Billy Huckaby, Glen Rose Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, Executive Director

The race series showcases the Tejas 500, a 500-mile race beginning 6:00pm, Thursday, September 22.  This race is also a qualifier for the prestigious Race Across America (RAAM).  In addition, racers will also compete in the “Iron Butt” 24-hour Time Trial, which challenges racers to complete as many loops as possible in the 24-hour time period.  Similarly, racers will also complete loops of the course in the “Tin Butt” 12-hour Time Trial, the 6-hour Shoot-Out and the increasingly popular 26.5 Mile Sprint with racers completing one loop as fast as possible.

Race officials stress that bicycle racing and riding is a sport for all skill levels and continue to encourage race entries.  To date, several Glen Rose residents have entered.

“TTTT is a great way to provide the entry-level racer/rider with a competition of their own, while simultaneously providing a challenging course for the most experienced racers from around the country and around the world.  Our desire is to really reach the entry-level bicycle riders with a challenging and enjoyable experience that will entice them to ride more.  Every racer pushes their physical and mental skills for a sense of pride that only comes from the self accomplishment of achieving a lofty goal.  And the trophy is pretty sweet too, since every racer will receive the same trophy as the 500-mile racers for evidence of their accomplishment for years to come.

This is an extremely eclectic race with world-class racers from France, Germany and more than half the states in the USA represented.  On the same course, at the same time, we also have many cyclists riding their first race ever.  It is incredible to see so many people from so far away travel to Glen Rose, Texas to ride their bikes.” – Dan Driscoll, Race Coordinator

The Texas Time Trials believes in being a good neighbor and as such continues to support charities, including Glen Rose’s United Methodist Church Youth Group and LDL Educational Resources Foundation.   The LDL foundation strives to provide funding for special educational needs for the district, as well as supporting health and environmental issues.

All races conclude by 6:00pm Saturday, September 24 and will be followed by the Awards Ceremony held underneath the Park Pavillion.  Activities include a buffet dinner followed by awards presentations and family and friends are encouraged to join racers and volunteers as the celebration commences.

Officials stress you don’t have to be a racer to be involved.  Volunteers are needed throughout the three days for all types for activities from checking in racers to cheering them on at street corners and turns.  No experience required, just a great attitude.

Another Day My Average Speed is Above 15 MPH – August 23rd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 23, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 23, 2011

Today’s ride had 6 five mile laps. Four of the six had an average speed of 15.3 mph or higher. The other two laps were below 15 mph. This pulled my overall average speed was 15.2 mph with a max speed of 21.3 mph. My average cadence was 80.2 RPM, 2 RPM lower than yesterday. I am doing better than last week on routes longer than last week. Today I rode 29.18 miles and the week total is at 57.14 miles. I started an hour earlier today than yesterday at 9:09AM. The temperature was 83 degrees at the start and 94 degrees at the end. Partly cloudy skies and a light 6 mph variable wind were the other conditions. The light wind felt good when I was heading into it but it slowed me down some.

August miles are 434.23 and year to date 3872.88. With my planned rides this week I could hit 4,000 miles for the year.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for August 22nd

Bike Theft: Thinking Outside of the Lock
from blog.makezine.com
There’s a joke among cyclists that goes something like this:

“All bikes weigh fifty pounds. A thirty pound bike requires a twenty pound lock. A forty pound bike requires a ten pound lock, and a fifty pound bike doesn’t need a lock, because really, who wants a fifty pound bike?”

In a post that takes this question seriously, Mike Estee writes…

GeoBetty.com has just published
from elpasoinc.com
GeoBetty.com, an El Paso-based business, has just published 20,000 copies of a printed map of hiking and mountain biking trails in the El Paso area. Free copies are available at El Paso Convention and visitors Bureau visitor centers, Fort Bliss MWR, and at area bike and running shops. More information is available at GeoBetty.com. The company is owned by Piñata Publishing, the publishers of the Official El Paso Visitors Guide.

After a Rest Day I Pick Up the Pace – August 22nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 22, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 22, 2011

I did not ride yesterday because I had ridden 6 days in a row. A day of recovery was in order plus I wanted to watch stage 2 of the Vuelta a Espana. I thought the USA Pro Challenge was starting yesterday but I as wrong; it begins today. Today’s ride shows what a rest date can do: my average speed was 15.5 mph (15.6 from Garmin Connect) on a 27.95 mile ride. My max speed was 20.3 mph and average cadence was 82.1 RPM. The cadence was almost 2 RPM higher than my Saturday ride.

As I write this at 2:20PM my home weather station shows the temperature to be 102.4 degrees. I did not get to start as early as I normally do because the carpet cleaners were coming at 9:00AM so I was delayed and did not leave until 10:09. By then the temperature was 86 degrees and was 96 degrees when I finished. So I got back before the 100+ hit but just barely. The skies are clear with no rain in sight which I would probably not recognize if it were to rain. Even the wind cannot make up its mind being variable at 4 mph.

August miles are up to 405.05 and year to date miles are 3843.70. I plan to ride Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and drive to Wichita Falls on Friday.
