About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bumming Around Virtual Dallas…
Submitted by Christopher Curnutt

I have been profoundly busy with work travel and family vacations and all.  I’ve had very little time to blog much and spent less time reading the many cycling blogs of my friends in the Dallas area.  So recently I’ve been trying to catch up to see what’s up in the virtual Dallas cycling world, so here’s a quick round robin of…

The world’s rarest Univega
from seenonthetrain.blogspot.com
About a year ago, I was riding a lot with my neighbor, Chris, and was extolling the virtues of having an old steel framed bike to turn into a singlespeed, beat around on, etc. I had finally talked him into it (of course, offering my mechanical services, as I am wont to do) and I…

Look at that swagger, that stance, those shorts! A shirt for bi-pedaling urban conquerors, no doubt. If you’ve never looked at Headline Shirts, you know they have some crazy shit. They’re giving away this $20 shirt for $5, today only, for you and only you (okay, you and anyone else…

Former Syracuse doctor, two friends finishing 8,141-mile bicycle trip started years ago
By Glenn Coin / The Post-Standard

Dave Cywinski’s legs are tired.

“We’ve cycled 20 out of the last 22 days, averaging about 100 miles a day,” Cywinski, an orthopedic surgeon in Geneva, said Saturday afternoon from Route 20 in Otsego County. “And in those two days off I flew back to Rochester to do some surgeries and…

Hot ride on Fall Creek loop
by Gil Jones         Musings of Captain Justice
Whether you call these the dog days of summer, the hot days, awful hot days … or whatever ….  A nice cycling trip through the Texas Hill Country makes everything be just alright!  You just have to start early and try to escape the main heat.

I am fortunate to have a number of good cycling companions in the area.  I had the same good fortune with motorcycling, but there is something about sweating together that…

I Improved my Average Speed but Not Compared to Some Other Bikers – August 20th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 20, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 20, 2011

I got an earlier start today in the hope of beating some of the heat. I am not sure I accomplished that goal since it was 95 degrees by the time I got back home after a 41.82 mile ride. It was 82 degrees when I rode away at 7:59AM so over the 3 1/2 hours the temperature went up 13 degrees. Yesterday my home weather station recorded 106+ degrees for a couple of hours. The sweat poured out of my body during the ride and drinking two water bottles plus a 44 oz. Diet Pepsi did not replace what I lost in fluid. My technique of dipping my head to the right produces a flood of water but it does seem to keep it out of my eyes. If I lower my chin enough to squeeze my helmet strap I get even more sweat to drop down on the road. I think my right shoe must get the brunt of the moisture but the wind appears to evaporate it.

While I was stopped at the Chevron station in Splendora to dry off some and refill my water bottle 5 other bikers from Kingwood pulled in. They were talking about averaging 23.5 mph for the 65 miles they had rode up to that point. This made my 15.4 mph average speed seem like I was walking but then again these guys were probably half my age and riding in a group. They were riding some high end bikes as well: Trek Madone, Pinerallo and others. One biker took his bandana off and wrung it out over the concrete and a lot of water fell out. At least I wasn’t the only one sweating up a storm. My goal was to increase my average speed and this I accomplished. My max speed was 20.5 mph and my average cadence also increased to 80.2 RPM.

Yesterday I received my Hotter’n Hell Hundred registration packet. I am rider #6669. Hopefully all of this hot weather practice riding will carry me on the 75 mile route. With the 6:15 AM start we will probably have low light and maybe a low temperature.

August mileage update:

  • August miles 377.09
  • This week’s miles 156.64
  • Year to date miles 3815.74

Wednesday Night Special: A Permanent Fixture
Shawnee Trail Cycling Club
When Bill started this ride, it was because he had other commitments on Thursdays for the summer and just wanted something to do for 10 or 12 weeks.  As our club grows, we’re finding that once you start a ride it’s very difficult to kill it – nothing is temporary.

By popular request, the Wednesday Night Special will live on.  Steve Petty has stepped up and will be the new…
