About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

We Arrive at Hotter’n Hell 100 August 27th

Texbiker.net Posted on August 28, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 28, 2010

We arrived Friday evening shortly after 5:00 PM. It soon became apparent that there were a lot of people parking cars and moving to the MPEC building. In addition to activities inside the MPEC building there was even more outside; mountain bike race, criterium race and numerous food stands and other vendors. I had heard that 14,000 riders were expected. Thank goodness the consumer expo had more space with the spaghetti dinner moving next door to the coliseum. There was almost enough room to navigate among the booths versus years past when breathing was an option.

The video included is a recap of what I saw. I think it is self-explanatory.

August 28th Bike Ride – Hotter’n Hell 100 Wichita Falls, TX

Texbiker.net Posted on August 28, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 28, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/46556667 465 548]

Today I rode the 75 mile route of the Hotter’n Hell 100. The weather was perfect for the ride. At the start the temperature was 69 degrees, skies clear blue and the wind out of the southeast at a light 6 to 8 mph. I lined up at 6:40 AM at the 100 mile slow rider group on Scott Street at 5th Street. The USAF jets were supposed to fly over at 7:00 AM but it was a few minutes later as the Star Spangled Banner finished. Next the cannon went off but I did not start my Garmin Edge 305 timer until 7:35 AM when our group moved forward. Unlike years before when a group moved you would not really move much but just up to the group in front of you, this year once we moved we stayed moving. This was much better because at the north end of Scott Street is a tall overpass that causes a backup when the riders do not have momentum to ride up and over.

In this post I will include video at the start line and follow up with video from the ride in a separate post.

The gallery below are pictures from Friday August 27th. The one that does not relate to the HH100 is the truck with the giant wind turbine blades. We passed this truck several times as we stopped and it did not. West Texas is a big location for wind generated electricity. Click on anyone of the pictures to open the gallery. The you can navigate the others by clicking on the one you want to see. The first picture is the hotel we stayed at in Henrietta. The others are at the start line on Saturday morning.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for August 27th

Texbiker.net Posted on August 27, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 27, 2010

The crowds are large in Wichita Falls for the Hotter’n Hell Hundred weekend. We arrived shortly after 5:30 Pm to a very full parking lot surrounding the MPEC building. We ended up parking in a business across the street from the parking lots. Walking to the entrance we saw many out of state license plates along with a number of exotic bikes. The number of Trek Madones was amazing. I guess the price must have come down because these are out my price league. The Expo was larger this year but because they rearranged the area you could walk around and not be crushed. I will have video when I get back home and have time to edit it. There was some mountain biking outside the MPEC building and a criterium on the east side of the coliseum. Tomorrow morning I will be lined up for the bike ride. I plan on taking the 75 mile route which is the 100 mile route and turning at the Hell’s Gate in Burkburnett. There should be video of the ride and other sights.

Fight Texas Bike Bans

BikeTexas.org is asking people to sign a petition to send a message to our governments:

We the undersigned believe that putting more bicycles on the road advances the goals of the Texas Department of Transportation:
1. Reduce congestion
2. Enhance safety
3. Expand economic opportunity
4. Improve air quality
5. Preserve the value of transportation assets.

We support all efforts to encourage lawful and courteous bicycling in Texas.

We oppose all efforts by any government entity in Texas to pass laws or ordinances that selectively prohibit or constrain operation of a bicycle on Texas roadways.

Karina Ramírez: Bicycle shop stays busy despite heat
from www.dentonrc.com
The triple-digit summer heat hasn’t stopped bicycle riders from going out and enjoying a ride. For evidence of this, just talk to Steve Scaggs, a mechanic at Denton Bicycle Center.

“You would think it would slow some people down, but I saw four or five cyclists earlier this morning,” he said.

He said the bicyclists seem to prefer riding early in the day and in the evening to avoid the strong heat. “You just cannot do it in the middle of the day,” he said. …
