About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

GHORBA Ride – Sugar Land Memorial – Sugar Land, TX

Texbiker.net Posted on August 26, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 26, 2010

GHORBA Ride – Sugar Land Memorial, Sept. 25th
GHORBA will be holding a local ride at our Sugar Land Memrorial (Justin P. Brindley) trail on Saturday, September 25th. We will meet at 9:00 am with wheels down at 9:30 am. This ride is open to all riders and not just GHORBA members so bring your family and invite your friends!

Sugar Land Memorial is a short 1.25 mile long trail located near the Brazos River. It is the perfect trail for riders who are new to the sport but the trail also contains 14 TTF’s (Technical Trail Features) that can be challenging for more experienced riders. The trail does not have any long climbs or downhills and feels more like a pump track with all the small hills and curves. For the more advanced riders there are drop-offs, skinnies, and other fun challenges littered throughout the course. It’s a great trail for all riders regardless of experience. There is no charge to enter the park.

As I drove down Garland Rd. past White Rock Lake this morning in front of the 7-11 there by the Spillway, I saw this sign: In the background, if you look hard, you can see the …

Man pedalled with dress shoes
by San Angelo Standard Times
Oklahoma resident Don Jonason finished the 2009 Hotter’N Hell Hundred in less than five hours in these dress shoes after he accidentally left his cycling shoes at home. Next to the shoes is his Shimano SPD SL pedal, which would have attached to his cycling shoes.

WICHITA FALLS — When Norman, Okla., resident Don Jonason began putting his gear on the morning of last year’s Hotter’N Hell Hundred, he got an unpleasant surprise — his cycling shoes were not in his bag.

“All I had was brown dress shoes with soft soles. I was pretty panicked,” he said. …

Cyclists laud camaraderie, health benefits of sport

Members of the West Texas Cycling Association cycle near Buffalo Springs Lake Thursday afternoon. Cyclers meet twice a week and ride from Chisum Truck Stop on the Slaton Highway.Thursday, August 19, 2010 (Photo by Geoffrey McAllister/Lubbock Avalanche-Journal)

The Chisum truck stop is an unlikely hangout for travelers who don’t need gas and aren’t ordering fast food.

Each Tuesday and Thursday, though, a group of spandex-clad cyclists gather there — stocking up on Gatorade, stretching their muscly limbs and discussing the wind and the weather.

To most of us — who haven’t ridden since grade school…

August 25th Bike Ride – The Heat Will Break

Texbiker.net Posted on August 25, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 25, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/46161155 465 548]

Today is supposed to be the last day for the near 100 degree temperatures until maybe next week. During the afternoon the temperature was 99 degrees but unlike other days the heat index was only 100 instead of the 108 of earlier. What this means is that the temperatures in Wichita Falls will probably not be over 100 degrees for Saturday’s bike ride. If memory serves me correct this could be third year in a row with the temperature below 100 degrees. I am not complaining, just observing.

The skies were clear for this evening’s ride but the wind has picked up some with the change in the weather. 13 mph from the northeast brought some resistance at times. In preparation of the ride this Saturday I have been riding in a 13 x 39 gear combination during the last several rides. Tonight I tried to stay in that gear from the 10 mile mark until the finish. I expected the legs to complain but it was not bad. Rarely do I get in a smaller rear cog unless I am going downhill with a tailwind. As you seen on the elevation chart there is not a big change from beginning to end.

Tomorrow evening I hope to get 22 to 23 miles in to position my weekly mileage at around 150 to 170. Time will tell if I make it.

This evening’s ride statistics:

  • miles 24.31
  • riding time 1:35:51
  • average pace 3:57 min/mile
  • average speed 15.2 mph
  • max speed 21.1 mph
  • average cadence 79.3 rpm
  • max cadence 110 rpm
  • climb 180 ft., descend 181 ft., max elevation 104 ft.
  • August miles 457.55
  • YTD miles 3566.02

UNT Avenue C gets sharrows and signs
from Bike Denton by bikedenton
After UNT announced plans to remove the Avenue C raised bike lanes, concerned citizens contacted UNT and the city, and the demolition was put on hold until recent weeks. Finally, we see that freshly painted sharrows and accompanying “Bicycle May Use Full Lanes” signs are up.  Since the city recently mentioned that Eagle could get bike lanes, this North/South route would tie-in nicely. …

Dad rides 100 miles to raise money for disease his daughter suffers
by The Republic
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – It was a short essay that his 13-year-old daughter wrote earlier this year that led her father, Darren Smith, to train and to travel from Cary, N.C., to ride the Hotter’N Hell Hundred bicycle race in Wichita Falls on Saturday.

Perrie Smith was diagnosed with a disorder called neurofibromatosis, or NF, when she was 2 years old. Despite having more than 50 birthmarks over her body and one tumor, “She has never complained,” her father said. …

Team San Angelo: Fall is (finally) coming!

Stephane and Sheri Marchiori, a French-American couple, have recently finished a 5-year journey around the world by bicycle.

The last leg of their trip, before they settled down to start the bike touring retailer Cyclocamping.com, was across the southern United States, along the well known Southern Tier route. It took them through some of the most beautiful landscapes of their trip, including the stunning Grand Canyon and the Mojave Desert. …
