About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Daily News Roundup August 23rd – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on August 23, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 23, 2010

Ladies racing categories | DORBA
from www.dorba2.com/forum
I’ve noticed that from the national level to the local Dorba level there are MUCH smaller groups of ladies racing than men. Seeing 2 ladies compete in one category’s age group is just a bummer. Since USAC doesn’t seem to be doing a whole lot to address this I thought I would bring it up with the Dorba folks. Why not eliminate age groups and just have racing based on your category, like road racing. It seems like it would beef up the number of racers per category. If you want to do 3 laps and train hard, race cat 1. If you ride occasionally for fun, race cat 3. Whatchya think? …

A Bicycle Ride with 14,000 of My Closest Friends…
by Dave
That’s right…that is a comma after the 14…and that is what the Hotter N Hell 100 Mile Ride attendance was for last year…and they are expecting to surpass that this coming weekend.

With so many riders, well, I don’t know what my expectations should be as far as finishing time. The experienced guys say that for the first 20 to 30 miles expect mayhem, wrecks and carnage on the road…and so for getting a good pace and going strong…well that probably won’t happen…unless…well….unless you get up closer to the front…and hammer out of the start. You know… burn a few of the matches in the book to get on down the road and then settle into a pace line. …

Hargrave’s Solavaca Mountain Bike Adventure – A Texas Mountain Bike Trail
Summer at the Solavaca = OPEN, Hot and Dry

Gate is open before dawn and the trail is open until dusk. The creek crossings are all dry now as we settle into the dry-month pattern until the rains come next in the Fall(?) or Spring(?). Early and late riding is recommended. Be sure and drink lots of water.

The Solavaca is on the schedule for TMBRA Spring XC Championship Series again – March 19-20, 2011.

This Texas mountain bike trail is located in the limestone hills of the Paluxy River watershed. Just down the road…

Fade the Heat – August 23rd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 23, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 23, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/45890781 465 548]

Up until the drive home the weather looked like it would be scorching until the sun went down. Then a stray storm came on the scene and the temperature dropped from 98 to 85 and the clouds got thick. Driving home I went through some rain but when I neared home the rain left and the roads were dry. But the lower temperature stayed. Even with the storm nearby the wind was calm so riding was no problem. With the heavy clouds the daylight was shortened so I did not get to ride quite as far as I had planned coming in just over 22 miles. No other riders crossed my path but numerous joggers were out. I’m still preparing for the HH100 on Saturday.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles 22.19
  • riding time 1:31:57
  • average pace 4:09 min/mile
  • average speed 14.5 mph
  • max speed 22.4 mph
  • average cadence 77.1 rpm
  • max cadence 104 rpm
  • climb 145 ft., descend 151 ft., max elevation 76 ft.
  • August miles 433.23
  • YTD miles 3541.70

Coming Soon to a Bike Path or Public Street Near You: FALL!
from Biking In Dallas by Michael W. Hubbard
It’s true. It’s not some sick joke. It really is about to cool off. Manana? No. Tomorrow it will be 105 degrees F. You’ll need to bring any paper products indoors, because that is the temperature at which such things spontaneously combust.

But soon. And what does that mean? It means that we go into the best time of the year in North Texas: our lovely extended fall…
