About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Hill Country Tri
from Mike’s Bike Blog
This was the final race in the 1379 Kids Tri series for Jack and the 1st triathlon for Zeb and Ethan. Zeb competed in the 5-6 year old division and Ethan was in the 9-10 year old division with Jack. The Hill Country Tri also has a parent division as well where the parents time is added to the kids time to form a team. Initially the plan was for Jennifer to compete since she’s been swimming and running on a consistent basis again since coming back from a lingering ITB injury. …

Denton, Texas traffic engineer: “The cyclist should consider actuating the pedestrian push button.”
by David Yoon
Amazing quote from the Head Traffic Engineer in Denton, Texas that pretty much sums up the infrastructural corner we’ve painted ourselves into. Behind all the technical smoke-and-mirror excuses lies a simple unwillingness to question the wisdom of initial urban design mistakes made long ago.

“It is worth noting that there are no known published national, TxDOT or regional metro policies/standards/guidelines/etc concerning what a “safer” timing is for a bicyclist at a signalized intersection. …

Daily News Roundup July 29th – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on July 29, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJuly 29, 2010

This week’s email newsletter from Dr. Mirkin has two subjects that I think are valuable to bicyclists. The link will not be active until 8/1/10.

Dr. Gabe Mirkin’s Fitness and Health E-Zine August 1, 2010
Lack of Vitamin D Weakens and Injures Muscles

Because of injuries in the springtime, I missed six Boston Marathons back in the 1960s.  It wasn’t until 40 years later that I found the cause: my vitamin D3 blood level was 20 nmol/l (normal is greater than 75 nmol/L, equal to 30 ng/ml).  Recently I moved to Florida and have been relatively injury free for the first time in my life.  I now know that people genetically susceptible to vitamin D deficiency are the ones most likely to suffer muscle weakness, injuries and poor athletic performance.  Many exercisers and even competitive athletes are vitamin D deficient even if they live in the sunbelt.  I believe that sunlight offers benefits that cannot be obtained just by taking vitamin D pills. …

and
Dear Dr. Mirkin: Last week you told us about the dangers of sitting for long periods; what can I do when my job requires this?.

and
Dear Dr. Mirkin:  How do you treat muscle pain from statin pills?

The following news is not Texas related but is my hometown related.

Zanesville men bicycling 330 miles for Pan Ohio Hope Ride
ZANESVILLE (Ohio) –Today Steve Hammer and Steve Herron will begin a 328-mile bike ride through Ohio.

The two Zanesville residents will begin the Pan Ohio Hope Ride today with hundreds of others.

Thunder in the Distance – July 29th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 29, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJuly 29, 2010

Rain was supposed to be rare today and it was but I could hear thunder in the distance. The rule is if it isn’t raining I go for a ride so off I went. My wife thought I might be calling for a ride back but It did not happen. In fact as I neared the end of my ride the clouds parted and sun shone through. 85 degrees, light SE breeze, 85% humidity made for a moist ride as far as perspiration went.

I was passed by one rider on the way back home otherwise no riders. I am moving to the goal of 3,100 miles for the year by the end of July.  Saturday could put me over the goal.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 23.21
  • riding time = 1:33:19
  • average pace = 4:01 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.9 mph
  • max speed = 21.5 mph
  • average cadence = 79.1 rpm
  • max cadence = 105 rpm
  • climb 129 ft., descend 145 ft., max elevation 123 ft.
  • July miles 488.23
  • YTD miles 3054.88
